My son will be turning 5 next week and we are dong his party on the 10th. I really don't want to do the dreaded goody bags, but thought about doing like either an individually wrapped cookie or like a cake pop for them to take home. My husband and I are on a rather tight budget, but still want to do something fairly neat. What do you think?

How much you spend, is also contingent on how many are invited and how big or small the party is. This also affects cost.
And if the party is at a meal time or not.
I think that's great! I HATE goody bags, as do most parents. Something they can eat and is gone forever...that sounds perfect!!
ETA: Make sure there are no food allergies, before deciding on baked goods. I love the baked goods idea, but you want to make sure no one will get a reaction!
I think you should stick to your initial feeling of doing nothing. I don't know why moms feel this need to do goody bags for parties now. I just don't get it. However, if you *do* feel like you need to do something, I think the cookie in a bag is a cute idea. Much better than all the crappy dollar store gifts and candy that everyone else tends to do.
We were in Michael's over the weekend and they have really cute small items right now... buckets w/ shovels, little "grow-your-own" plant kits, etc. Each was under $2.
My son's birthday is in late May. We're doing the party the first week in June and are debating on doing a kite for each child. Considering that we are on the verge of spring... google "kite kits". My husband found one site that had cute "make your own" kites $12 for 12 kits!
I'm having my 5 year old's birthday party this weekend. I also despise the cheap goodie bags so was on a mission to find something else. We searched Wal-mart high and low and found the cutests character kites for $1.50 each. They have Spiderman and such for the boys and Cinderella and such for the girls. I got a lot and will take back whatever doesn't get passed out.
We have done plastic sports bottles and I put their name on them. Also we have done a $5 gift card to mcdonalds too.
I think the cookie or cake pop would be great favors. You might also want to check out the camo party on tip junkie http://go.tipjunkie.com/pa/2779/buckets-of-grace.blogspot.... You could easily and fairly economically do the chocolate covered pretzel rods for party favors, always yummy and cute too! Also check party city they might have a cup or something that would be affordable and fun for a favor. Have Fun!

get the kids ice cream bowls and spoons. have a sundae bar, and the kids get to keep the bowl.
