Pants for a 4 Yr Old

Ok, I am at my wits end trying to find pants to fit my 4 yr granddaughter. She's not fat, but solid. Her thighs and calves are heavy set and she has a tummy. We've tried Target and Walmart so far, but no luck there. Anyone have ideas on where to try next. Do you know of a brand that is generous in the leg and hind-end area. I think that she would be wearing a 6 if we could find something to fit.

TIA,

N.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone that responded. I have many good leads as to where to look for pants for her. This weekend I plan on taking her shopping again. Much rather have my teeth pulled out than take that one shopping but I refuse to bring home a ton of stuff only to have to return it.

Again, thanks all of you "Mama's" you are the best!!

My oldest granddaughter is built the same way. She is 6 years old and we can't seem to find pants that work well for her either in the girls section. What we do is go to the boys section in JC Penney's or Sears and buy jeans there. She wears a size 10 in girls and an 8 in boys. If she doesn't like the boys pants because they don't have all the sparkles and girly things that the girls do, go to walmart or a sewing center and find iron on patches that are girlish and iron them onto the pockets or front legs

Land's End has plus sizes for kids at pretty reasonable prices. They are a sister company of Sears, so if you buy something that doesn't fit, you can return it at Sears. I've found their sizing chart to be very accurate, if you just take your granddaughter's measurements. I have one kiddo who is in the "skinny" range, and we have had great success with the "slim" sizes from Land's End, which is why I know they also have the Plus sizes.

Also, when my youngest was tiny, she had good-sized legs and a little tummy - we had some success at The Children's Place. Their pants seem to be cut a little more generously through the thigh area.

Good luck!

Hi Tia N.,

I have a 4 year old who is thick on the bottom so we always size up. I suggest going with a size 6. 1 size up (5) is fine until you wash it a few times then its too tight. And we like Kohls, Carter's and Gap brands. We choose simple pants that you don't have to zip or button if possible, those seem to create issues and make her uncomfortable. We stay away from denim, unless its thinner denim. In hotter months, we always go with capri pants since length there is not an issue. But cooler months we go with skinny pants so you won't have to worry about the length. Gap can be pricer but they have adjustable waist pants http://www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=6274. Kohls are great for simple pants that you just pull up. Same for Target, shop in the little girls section go with a 6.Try to stay away from bootcut, those are very long. It should fit her perfect, if not wash and place it dryer and it will. Good luck!

Osh Gosh (the same company as Carter but kind of "older" kid clothes) sells jeans with elastic on the inside so that it is easier to size, up or down. My problem is that my son is really tall but thin, so finding pants that are long enough for him is a challenge. With these jeans, I can tighten the waistband on a larger size to fit him. You might be able to do something similar.

Good luck.

Try Old Navy.
They have pants that have elastic waists and adjustable waists.
And they have all kinds of pants from denim to knit pants to leggings.
And they have regular or plus sizes.
Look in the "Toddler Girls" category which is until size 5T, or look in the "girls" category.
And Old Navy always has some kind of sale.

JC Penney carries a decent selection of girls "plus" sizes, for sure in the 7 to 14 range, not sure about 4 to 6, but it might be worth checking out.

My son is also thick in the bottom, I find pants at Walmart, or jcpenny. These must be husky though, reg fit does not work for him.

I'd try Carter's brand or Jumping Beans (I think that's either JC Penny or Kohl's). Look for stretch fabric vs jeans.

Maybe try capris. When my daughter was that age, by the time I found pants that would fit around her waste and bottom, they were a mile long on her. Capris were the answer for us. They went down to her ankles, but that worked for us.

I know Justice has a brand of jean that carries a plus size so it is a 4plus instead of a regular 4. so if old navy doesn't work I would try there

My daughters have this problem, and we pretty much have to use stretchy pants, and not jeans. Dresses or long shirts with leggings also works nicely for that body type.

Try Old Navy. They have a ton of styles and have "adjustable" waist bands that actually work and don't "look elastic" from the outside.

Osh Kosh B'Gosh Outlet? I accident bought what was labelled "husky" for my son, and while they were the same length, they were more generously cut. I'm not sure what they label the girls' more generous sizes, but they do have them. They are stylish and decently priced. Good luck!

I have the opposite, I have to take everything in...but I would suggest going with a larger size stretchy type pants and hemming them...if you buy jeans, you can actually cut them off if they legs are too long and fray them so they're meant to look that way. Or you could cuff them and tack the cuff up so it doesn't roll down.

I thought Target ran big, but you might also try Old Navy
