Pants and Diaper Removing 22 Month Old Daughter!

In the last 3-4 days, my 22 month old daughter has begun to remove her pants and diaper; sometimes before she urinates and sometimes after! This is fine, but I'm sure at some point she will start removing the diaper after she goes poopy (not so cute)! She has an Elmo training potty and a potty seat for the "big girl" toilet, but she only "pretends" so far to use it. She has not learned to tell me when she has to go potty, although she likes to say it after the fact. Additionally, I bought her some "big girl" panties to wear in preparation for the potty, but those are currently being worn over the diaper. I'm sure her pants/diaper removal is in preparation for the "big girl" potty, but does anyone have suggestions on how to keep her in her pants/diapers until she can tell me she has to go in the potty? Many thanks! D. H.

What can I do next?

At 20 months, probably in response to the birth of my son, my daughter started taking her diaper off. And yes, she did it after pooping! I think this was a call for attention in her case. I had to resort to using packing tape (wrapped all the way around like a belt) to keep her diaper on and cutting it off with scissors at change time. This went on for about 3 weeks and when I stopped using the tape, she seemed to have lost her desire to take her diaper off. Hope this helps!

My son didnt officially train until he was 3 but my daughter wanted to start more around 28 months. My mother was always upset with me saying that I should have had the kids potty training around 12 months. I find that hard to do since they cant talk, etc. They will obviously learn whether you push the issue or wait. I do think this is a sign that she is ready. If she is pulling her pants down before or after she pees she is obviously feeling it and is aware. She probably doesnt like it. This is a good thing. It will be awhile before she can verbalize I have to go potty and then you take her. Potty training usually starts with reading the signals...and then you setting up a schedule. If you are ready to take the time to put into it then start training her. Go cold turkey on the diapers. Big girl panties all the way. Make sure you take her potty about 20-30 minutes after having drink and about every hour otherwise. You will begin to read her signals and so will she. She will get to the telling you part. It may take a while hence the word "training" or oddly enough it can happen fast. My daughter seemed to take awhile longer than my son to really get the no accidents thing. My son only had three accidents. Once standing at the bathroom door waiting for someone to come out...once we explained to knock and that person would speed up for kids then no accident. Once outside he peed in grass...when asked why he said like dog...explained humans go in potty but at least pull pants down next time. Once in car...once we explained that he needed to tell us and we would pull over..no more accidents. She has been a little more difficult but she is very independent and stubborn to no end so she is not much for helping or training her...she wants to figure out everything on her own.

I'm in the same boat as you. My daughter is doing exactly the same thing. To answer your question about how to keep her in her pants/diapers, I keep my daughter in a onesie. When she would pull her pants down and get down to the onesie she had a hard time trying to unsnap the snaps. Now she doesn't bother trying to undress herself all the time. Good Luck with the potty training.

Here are some suggestions on how to keep her diaper on (when you want it on!!)
Put the diaper on backwards
put underwear on over her diaper
put her in a onesie or something that snaps
at night, put her in zip-up PJs and put them on backwards.

THis could very well be a sign that she is ready to train...or it could just be a 2 year old thing! I would try to sit her on the potty and follow her lead!

Good Luck!

Very normal. She is letting you know she is ready. When you are at home, try removing the diapers and only letting her wear the panties. If she wets, she realizes it and is more prone to feel a tingle and alert you about the bathroom and needing to go. From my experience, I put my daughters' and sons' potty seat next to mine, and when I had to go they sat and practiced too. It took about three weeks, but they figured it out. It's just practice and repetition. Good luck.

Hi D.! I have a 3yr old. What i did is pretty much stay home,we didn't leave the house unless we absolutely needed to. I put him on the potty about every 30min.sometimes he went and sometimes he didn't. I always rewarded him for going or at least trying,w/stickers that he could put in a special book. For poopy time, when i could tell he had to go,i would put him on the potty chair and we would read books until he went, then i'd dump it into the big toilet and he'd flush it.he liked that. I had stopped using diapers and tried using pull-ups, he would still use it as a diaper. So i bought his favorite character underwear. I told him not to potty on them(ex.:"lightening mcqueen")he did pretty good. Sometimes he had accidents and still does at times. Just be patient and she'll get it soon enough. I tried at 18mo., it didn't work,so i waited 'til 2yrs.it seems like they'll never get it, but one day it'll just happen. I also bought rubber undies to put over his underwear,so if we were out,it wouldn't go through. Taking off the her diaper(i'm sure you know)means she's ready for the process. You'll do great and so will she! Good luck to you both....M.

Sounds weird I know, but put her diaper on backwards. When at home (with no guests!) let her go "naked hiney." Keep her potty chair and cleaning supplies handy though!

Hi D.!
This is an exciting time! I have three children. My youngest is 3.With all my children I had to be consistent.
Your daughter is ready to potty train.Everytime you go, take her.Everytime she finishes her meals and drinks, take her.
I liked to run trickling water from the faucet, and gave them a potty book to look at while sitting.I also let my kids run around with only their underwear on.That way there is nothing that is comfortable about that when she goes. Its messy but it works quickly. It took about 3 weeks. Also a 100% fruit snack(tastes like gummies) as a reward for going, worked really well.I have two boys and one girl. For my daughter the only thing that motivated her was her stickers on her wall chart.
Wish you the best!

I feel your pain. I have twin 2 1/2 year old girls and they have been doing this for a while now. I really think it is part of them getting ready to potty train. They are still learning- they do go to the potty sometimes but have not totaly gotten down that they need to tell us everytime they need to go. They have not to this point taken off a stinky diaper yet so maybe your daughter won't do this either. I have learned that if we are at home to let them run around w/ out their pants and diaper in hopes that they will run to the potty. So far every few accidents(only pee pee),thank the lord for that! I say just let her run around without them and hope she will tell you or just run to her potty. I hope this helps!

My daughter just didn't want anything on. She also painted her walls, but refused to go on the potty. We taped her diaper, put diaper pins on her sleepers, put her sleepers on backwards with and without diaper pins. I highly do not suggest safety pins they pull apart too easily. She was in the larger sizes of pull up at that time so the onsies and backward diapers weren't an option for us. When I asked our doctor at first, before she started painting with her poops, He said that she was just proud that she had learned something new. He offered that if I put a potty chair in the spot she had the most accidents that she might connect the two and go on the potty but she had no interest in it as a potty. It all stopped right before her sister was born and everything just went in to place like a curtain had been lifted and she got it finally. She is day trained and all we have to do is worry about night training.
I know it is frustrating but just be patient. I showed her potty tapes. Her favorite was potty time for girls. She was afraid of the bear in the big blue house for some reason so I didn't push it.

Don't bother to keep them on. When you are at home encourage that behavior! That is great. she is telling you something. Just let her go naked buns and applaud her for using the potty. Maybe her favorite doll or stuffed animal has to potty too. let her pee on the floor a few times and tell her to next time do it in the potty. she wants to do this. try using cloth diapers to raise her awareness of when she has to use the potty. They make cloth pull ups also. go to www.kelly'scloset.com to find some great stuff of cloth training pants and such. good luck.

She is already telling you she needs to use the potty in her own way. Like suggested already, put the panties on her without the diaper. She will not like the feeling of it running down her legs and pull ups are only diapers that look like underware and will feel the same as a diaper to her. Or start putting her on a schedule for the potty. Start every half hour till she goes pee in the potty. Then go every 45 mins till the next time unless she pees before that. Then what ever the time frame was, use that as your guideline. You also might want to try the ring that goes in the toilet to make the hole smaller. She sees you using that potty, not the little one where your knees are up at your chin. And if she isn't trying to use the potty chair for what it is, then she isn't going to either.

Good luck!!
