Hi moms. I am a 30 year old mother of a 7yr boy. Due to severe problems with misscarriages and birth control, i just had a tubal ligation 5 days ago. i was told that it was a simple procedure with minimal pain. The problem is I am having alot of stomach pain. I have a constant ache in my lower stomach and cramping even after i take my pain pills. i get sharp pains in my lower right side of my belly and at times even in my growin. My o.b did some testing to check for a bowel obstruction and he said everythings looks fine. I have been uncomfortable since tha surgery and i'm tired of this feeling. Is this at all normal or is there something wrong that he isnt finding. I appreciate any and all advice.

What can I do next?

I had one done two months ago. It was a lot more painful and lasted a lot longer than they said it would. I still have a lot of pain when I try to exercise. The doctor said it would take a while. My pain is more like cramps . . . at worse Braxton hicks. If it's sharp pains I would go in. They keep telling me to drink more water and stretch. Good luck!

I had my tubal ligation 2 days ago and i have never been in so much pain in my life except for when i was in labor. I keep hearing people say they felt fine the day after surgery. But i wonder if they are crazy because it doesnt feel like my pains going anywhere for a while. I also get sharp pains in my stomach, side, and shoulder that gets worse when i lay down people say its just air that they put in there but not too sure. Tubals really suck. "minimal pain" ha! Good luck hope you feel better.

I didn't experience anything like this. I'd push for an answer and not ignore it.

Hi T.,

I had a tubal 12 years ago and remember the pain was stronger and longer than what the doctor had mentioned. It seems like it went on for a month or longer, getting less severe with time. Mine was immediately after childbirth though, so I don't know if that had any bearing on my pain. If your doctor is not concerned I would not be concerned, but would have him check it again in a couple of weeks if there is still pain. You should go in immediately for medical care if you have a fever or the pain gets worse.

Hi T.,

I am sorry you are feeling so awful. I would suggest you going back to the doctor for another exam or getting a second opinion. Your symptoms should be subsiding not worse. I would insist that they do a scan or something that shows that everything is ok. I hope you feel better.

I had a tubal also and the doctor told me the same thing (that there would be minimal pain) but I had sharp pains and was quite uncomfortable off and on for a long time. (Yes, I did talk to the Dr about it and I even got a CT scan) I think at around 3 months I finally felt 100%. I had two other friends have the same experience. One is a nurse and she told me the doctors just do not know what they are talking about bc they have not had the procedure and that it is pretty common to have pain and take a while to recover.

Did they have to inflate your abdomen? It could be the gas build up trying to dissipate, which is very painful. It'll go away once the extra air comes out (a few more days). Check with your doctor to be sure and hang in there.

Go back and have him check it out. I had minimal pain after mine, more of an ache like I'd been punched in the gut, and a large bruise in the navel. I didn't take pain meds other then motrin, and that only for a day or so. Some people have higher pain tolerence, your tubal might have been harder on your body then on other people's, or there might be something else going on, swelling, bleeding or something else. Best to go in and have it checked out.

Sorry this response is so late. I had a tubal ligation after my 4th child. My dr told me that it was a simple procedure and the pain is minimal and controlled with meds. I have a high pain tolerance, but let me tell ya, it was still painful and uncomfortable. It was most painful when I walked. I don't know why they act like it's no big deal! My husband should be very thankful that I went through with that instead of him. LOL
Oh...and they didn't have to inflate my stomach since I had just had the baby! So it wasn't due to that!
