Enough sleep. That and enough water. I don't wear makeup (occasionally a light dusting of powder) and I wash my face with something my husband picks up in bulk at Whole Foods. I think it's called "BioCleanse" or NutriCleanse and has no soap in it.
A smile is also a great beautifier-- and it's free!

I'm not 40 yet, but I'm turning 38 next month. My newest must have beauty product is L'Oreal's Magic Skin Beautifier BB cream. It's a 4-in-1 BB. I love it. LOVE IT.
For a practical product, I really love my foundation brush. It's good for cream or liquid foundation. I use it for my BB cream or my foundation. It spreads it very thinly and evenly, waaaaaaaaaay better than with those little foam pads and surprisingly even better than using my fingers. I found a great one by Revlon after some searching.
Oh, and drink lots and lots and lots of water. You have to keep your body hydrated for so many reasons, but for healthy skin, hair, and nails you really need to keep hydrated. It's good for your eyes to look healthy too.
Want a simple facial? Plain Philip's milk of magnesia. When your skin is clean with whatever you use, once a week smooth on some milk of magnesia and let it dry like a face mask. Then rinse it off. You'll be amazed at how your skin glows.
It's also wonderful for neutralizing nasty acidic diaper rashes like when babies have diarrhea.
Retin A (Tretinoin Cream ) is the bomb.
Retin A---without a doubt the BEST product that a woman can use to combat wrinkles (after sunscreen that is). It is the gold standard and the only proven method that there is. I have been using it for 10 years now and I have no expression lines at all. Esp around my eyes where almost everyone gets them.
It can be difficult to use at first. The trick is to start out with a low concentration and use every couple days, working up to every night. You will get a little flaking at first but that should go away.

Besides the normal daily routine of hydrating my skin with a Garnier facial cream, I clean/wash every single night my face and neck.
I use Rose Hip Oil before going to bed; I don't use a lot of make up but BB facial cream (Garnier) daily......and....don't laugh.....hemorrhoids cream BUT for MY EYE LIDS!!!!Please don't do it before knowing if you are allergic to some of the ingredients and before consulting your dermatologist...but for me, works wonderfully!!!!! I look younger....which makes me feel so glad!!!
Although I use many beauty products, and I wouldn't want to be without any of them, I think that my most must-have would be my Loving Naturals organic broad-spectrum face sunscreen. It protects my face without any harsh/harmful chemicals or irritation. (It's relatively inexpensive, too.)
