I had a ultrasound today and they found a ruptured cyst. I am so confused. Yes I know what a cyst is. I know that if it was heavy enough it could have ruined it. My Dr. office has not called yet and I am not googling this! (freak stories on google :)) Can anyone give me advice and tell me what is really going on? At least I know what the pain is from.

What can I do next?

I had this about 20 years ago. I remember it being painful but the docs did not do anything about it and it resolved on is own. I think I just took ibuprofen for the pain. Good luck!

My 20 year old and my 23 year old daughters both get cysts, but its from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It is easily treated by taking birth control and PCOS is very common. Basically what happens is that each month our hormones cause the eggs in our ovaries to develop and eventually be released into the fillopian tube. When there are not enough female hormones to complete this development, the egg stays in the ovary and is larger than normal, causing pain, etc. My 20 year old clearly has a ring of unreleased eggs on her ovaries and it caused her pain until we put her on birth control.
I would go see your doctor. If you plan to have babies, PCOS can cause conception issues.
Birth control prevents the release of eggs, which is why they put people on it for cysts and PCOS.

If it has ruptured, then I think the worst is done. I have had cyst pain occasionally over the years - it's kind of hard to misinterpret - and each time I have had an ultrasound, where they said it likely ruptured but would simply reabsorb into my body. My friend had a grapefruit sized one removed with surgery and stays on birth control pills to reduce her risk of another like that which could be dangerous. I think all you need to do is monitor pain if it reoccurs and ask for another ultrasound if it goes on for more than hours or a day or so. But I don't think this is anything to worry about, unless it was a big cyst or you've had similar pain many times before (then they might want you to watch for a reoccurance of a large cyst).

By all means, call the nurse and say you were a little overwhelmed at the time, but could she explain the results to you. Too often, we don't get the info we need, especially sitting in the doctor's office, and it causes us unnecessary anxiety. It will be 1 minute out of the nurse's day to call you back and give you peace of mind.

I had these in my early to mid 20s. Mine ruptured too, very painful. BC "fixed" it. No fertility problems after. Take care.

I got a painful cyst when I was 18, and I got put on birth control to take care of it and to prevent other cysts from forming. To my knowledge, most women get painless ovarian cysts every month, but they go away on their own. Some women's cysts don't go away on their own, so they have to take BC to prevent them. At least, that's how the gyno nurse explained it to me then.

I had one rupture, it was awful. I was so sick and in a lot of pain. I was fine after a few days. Went on to have three kids, even a set of twins. I've heard plenty of stories about ruptured cysts with no long term side effects. But yes, birth control is a good fix.

I had a ruputureed cyst when I got pregnant with my first. Everytime the egg releases, a cyst if formed. It normally is a small one that naturally goes away. Sometimes though, they are big and rupture. The pain is from the leakage of the fluid in the cyst. It hurt like a SOB for a couple of weeks. I had gone to the emergency room and was given vicadan for the pain for a couple of days then I think I just took tylenol (b/c I was pregnant and couldn't take IP profen). I was laid on the on the couch alot with a heating pad. It will be OK. It is not fatal. Just lay low and hope you feel better soon.
