Out of Order Teething

My son had the same thing happen. His middle top teeth soon followed the outside ones though. He did resemble a vampire for a few weeks! My dr. said that it is not something to be to concerned about as long as his front teeth do come in. I would love to know when/if her front teeth do come in.

Hello, our son did the same. We joked that he looked like "fang"! We didn't even think to be concerned when it happened and his doctor never showed concern, either. I don't remember how long after he finally got the front, but they did come in eventually and he now has a full set of teeth. :-) I would definitely not worry especially if the doc thinks there's no cause for concern. My baby is fine, and I'm sure yours will be, too!

I have a friend who's son had his side teeth come in first, before any others. He looked like a little vampire for a while!! But everything followed, and he has a fine set of teeth now. i wouldn't worry. Just get some pictures of his fangy smile!!

I haven't had that happen, but yes it's true some children are genetically missing one or more teeth. Are the gums swollen in the center? Can you "feel" them if you rub her gums? Don't be afraid to take you child to the dentist now if you're worried. I worked for a pediatric dentist for 9 years that specialized in children only. What area do you live in? I might be able to recommend one in your area. In the worst case scenario, if the teeth are not going to come in, you can have a space maintainer (sort of like a child's bridge) put on. This helps cosmetically, it helps with speech development and holding the space so the other teeth stay where they are supposed to. You have to wait until they are about 2, because this appliance has to be cemented to their two year molars. Once it's in, you can't tell. The labs are amazing. They would take an impression of you child's mouth at the dentist office, send it to the lab, then the lab would make two false teeth, that look very real, and very much the same size and shape they would have expected the real teeth to be. These types of appliances are used for kids missing certain teeth and for those kids that lost certain baby teeth in an injury or accident. Again, let me know where you live, some parents would literally drive up to 3 hours to come see the dentist I worked for. If you can feel the teeth up in the gums, or see they are there protruding, she may just be having a terribly hard time getting them through the gums. There is a procedure called a gingavectomy that lances the gums open very quickly to allow the teeth to drop down. It sounds awful, but it is very fast and very effective. That is mostly used for older children getting their permanent teeth in, but you never know, it's worth asking about if it's right in your situation.
Like I said, don't be embarrassed about taking a baby into see the pediatric dentist early. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, they should go by the time they are 1 anyway. Also, chances are the dentist has "seen it all." We had instances of babies born with teeth coming in as newborns. They had to have those teeth pulled out, so they don't swallow them when they are feeding. Hope this helps, there is ex-coworker of mine on mamasourse boards that still works for him. I wouldn't worry too much about it, my daughter had the same thing happen. She got her two bottom teeth, then one of her canines. Then after that her next canine started coming in(she looked like a vampire)then after that both of her tops started coming in at the same time. Her doc also said it happens sometimes. I am sure she will be fine. I was worried a little too though because my oldest daughter didn't have a problem like that. It will be ok. S.

I have a 6 month old girl who also got her side teeth first. She just got her two bottom side teeth out and the doctor told us is ok, but I had never heard of it or seen it. I will keep an eye on her and also ask the doctor more quesitons.

Yes, this happened to my son who is now 2yrs old. And his teeth are perfect! There was never a problem. Our doc. didn't seemed to concerned with it as well and just said keep an eye on the middles when they do come in to make sure there was room.

My son also started teething early at 4mns so I don't know if that made a difference.

Yes, please don't worry at all. My Youngest had her 2 bottom teeth come in first at 12 months. The next tooth to come in was the Top left, next to the Top front 2 (which weren't in yet). Then the Top Front 2 came in catching up with the other tooth. Then all 4 Top teeth were growing in looking all crooked & funny! Always take pictures - we did! You'll never see that again. You wanna hear of some strange teeth coming in. My daughter started getting her first teeth at 14 months old. She didnt get that cute two bottom teeth like most babies nope. My baby decided that her top teeth would come in first..not the top center two buyt the top left two. then the bottom center two. It looked like her mouth was crooked. Her regualr doc said not to worry at all..they teeth will all show up eventually. Well, we once went in and had to see a doctor that was not her normal and he got us all paranoid by saying that if the teeth didnt come in right and within the next few months they'd have to do x-rays nad worse case they'd have to cut the gum to allow the rest in. I FREAKED. Went back the next day to see her regualr doc and she said that that is so ridiculously rare and not to worry about it, every child teeths at different times, and get different teeth in first. She did say that the older the child gets when the teeth start coming in, then the more likely their teeth is to come in out of order. So, dont worry and just be patient..they will all show up eventually. My daughter is now 2 and just started getting her eye teeth on only the top and bottom left...see still getting them out of order. Only got the other eye teeth and 2 more molars and we are done. YAY..lol
