Organic Milk - Cleveland,OH

What have people heard about organic milk vs. regular milk? I have heard different things. I read that it is the one organic thing you should give to young children because they drink so much milk. Someone else told me their pediatrician said no to organic milk especially for girls because it could make them develop faster. This made no sense to me, I thought that was the whole point of organic milk-no hormones???? Thanks.

What can I do next?

Maybe this article from the Center for Food Safety can help sort out this issue:

it's true. organic dairy products are the most important thing to go for, if you have to choose. my doctor told me that pure organic fats are the most important because the fats (like the cream in milk and butter) store pesticides and chemicals in them, so you want to get them from a chemical and pesticide-free source.

Organic means that the cows are fed a diet of organic grass and feed. they are raised on certified organic farms. That means there are not pesticides in their food, therefore there are no pesticides in your milk. It is pasteurized the same way, and there is not more sucrose in it. !!?!?

milk with BGH (most milk now, unless it specifically says on the label that there is NOT BGH in it) can make girls develop faster. It is a growth hormone given to the cow to make it produce more milk. (very unhealthy for the cow, causes mastitis and engorgement) it is similar to female hormones and can cause early periods and breast development. (like age 9-10 instead of 14!) this bovine growth hormone is actually illegal in european dairies, and some people are fighting for it to be banned here as well. also think about giving those hormones to boys.......... ?? do you want feminine boys?

go organic. it's only a few dollars, and well worth it.

I've never heard of girls developing more rapidly from drinking organic milk. But, depending on who you ask, no dairy products are good for human consumption. Humans are the only animal to drink milk from another animal. But, I think it's just a personal choice. We drink cow's milk in our family (I don't very often since I don't like it, lol). I think the primary difference in organic milk is that it is pasturized differently and the cows are given less (or now) hormones. It's supposed to be better for you, but not knowing all that much information about it, I don't know how true it is. I've never really tried it because of the price, so I don't know if the taste is that much different or not.

God bless,
A.

Someone has their milk's backwards. Organic is GOOD for you! My girls (ages 17 and 13) and I drink Rice Milk... YUMMY!!! And you can get it in diff. NATURAL flavors. It's sweeter than ur regular not good for you milk.

Peds, Docs, any 1 in the medical field are out for your money! Of course they are going to tell you to drink regular milk because they already know that it IS bad for you, and when your child becomes allergic and/or sick guess what you do? Take her to the doc... ha, there you go, more money for the doc cuz now your little girl has allergies. Sorry. I know it's an opinion about the docs, but you do what's best for your little girl and your family. The doc that told you ORGANIC was bad for you is not a doc but a CROC! or in this case CROOK!
Good Luck,
Drink Rice Milk... Goat milk is very good for you too.

Kathy B.'s pediatrician recomended against organic because there is more sugar? What?! Organic means there are no pesticides used or artifical growth hormones--or chemicals added --and there is no sugar added in pasterization--that is high heat. And your ped advised against organic milk--when of course it is factory farm milk that causes faster development. Sounds like you and kathy need to find doctors who actually care about your childs health rather than making more business for themselves in the future! Either your doctors are deliberately lying or are completely ignorant--neither of which is a good sign. Organic is how we humans ate for thousands of years--the chemical/hormone/genetically modifed fake food we have been consuming is now going into a 50 year experiment --which given the obesity and chronic disease rates in our country it it pretty clear which is healthier! There have been numerous studies recently comparing organic with chemical raised foods--the differences are more nutrients in organic and less toxins(there may still be some because of polluted air and water sadly).Be careful though organic standards are not very well enforced--many commercial organic dairy products come from cows who are kept in factory farms --not healthy(or humane)Horizon is one of the worst offenders. Local free range is much better for any animal products--dairy, meat, eggs etc. And for other foods local grown and organic are much healthier for us and the planet. Personally I agree with another Mom on here--we are the only species which consumes milk from other species or after weaning age(which is naturally around 2 1/2 -3 yrs for humans) Milk is very specifically made for the individual mammal. But if you do consume milk at least get it the way nature makes it. Also, as prices have gone up on food I have noticed that now organics are not so much more expensive. As Michael Pollen says in his book--spend more to get better quality food and eat less and it will balance out. Of course, being in better health you will save tons of money over the long run and feel better! Check out local farmer's markets and CSA's for saving money and getting higher quality food. I choose organic, local grown first, organic, commercial second and local grown, conventional third--and do not choose to eat factory chemical food. Sometimes we eat out and probably get food that does not meet that criteria--but we rarely eat out anymore becaue it is so expensive and we don't feel good after. We went out for my birthday and felt bloated and uncomfortable afterwards and realized we could have bought half a weeks organic food for what we spent eating out! so we are staying at home and inviting friends over instead for celebrations!

My ped. suggested against organic foods for young childern and infants. Its sweeter b/c of the stuff that goes into in during pasturation. It has TONS more sucrose in it, which in turn is lead to believe that it will cause more sugar cravings and overweight issues than regular cows milk.

My brother is a strong advocate for organic products altogether.

I did get organic milk for a while with my first daughter, and can tell you that it didn't make her develop any faster than my second daughter.

I'd say if you can afford to do it, and it's something you want to do, then go for it.

There's a place that you can sign up and even have it delivered to you and in glass bottles too - www.oberweis.com
They have other products available too. It's a smidge pricey, but VERY convenient.

I have only given my kids organic milk and will continue to do so. Yes it is expensive but I feel very strongly about it. I try to only buy items that I have coupons for and are on sale so I feel like what I am saving elsewhere pays for the organic items I buy. I don't have any documented proof that it's better and there are even studies that say there aren't any added advantage to drinking organic milk. It just makes sense to me to use/drink/eat items that are as close to nature as possible. You just have to do what you think is best and take what the media/other people say with a grain of salt...

I think your Pediatrician is confused. Maybe he is thinking of soy milk because soy is a phytoestrogen, meaning it can mock estrogen in the body. I always give my kids organic milk when I am out of raw milk. We are in a raw milk co-op and take turns picking it up from a farm. There are many benefits to raw milk that can be researched on the internet. Also, check out the book "Nourishing Traditions" for some great insight into healthful eating.

One more thing on organic milk, watch out for Horizon. They have been reported to have shady standards.
