Organic Mattresses Vs. Regular Mattresses

I would recommend the Naturepedic No-Compromise Organic Cotton 150 coil mattress. I ordered it for my son from Amazon.com and we just love it. We paid $259 and it arrived within about 3 or 4 days. It is extremely well-made and it meets all federal standards for fire resistance without using all the toxic flame-retardant chemicals that the other brands use. Plus there is a water-resistant coating that is made from food-grade polyethylene and its hypoallergenic. Yes, they are more expensive but wouldn't you rather have your baby sleeping on a clean surface than breathing in chemicals night after night? Newborns sleep about 20 hours a day, and even a 2-year old sleeps about 12. The mattress will be used until about 3 or 4 years old. Think about how much exposure that is, especially for someone so tiny. When we were babies, there were much less chemicals in everything. The newest generation of children are being used as guinea pigs. Flame-retardant chemicals have been linked with cancer in animal lab tests. And that is not the only dangerous substance in regular mattresses. Also, there is a possible link with the chemicals in the mattresses and SIDS. It is not a definite link but combined with other factors such as overheating or breathing in their expelled air from being covered with a blanket or sleeping on their stomachs, it seems plausible. I did not want to take the risk, however small.

We bought an organic mattress and organic cotton mattress pad for our son who was born in Dec. I felt that it was worth the added expense because this was an item that he would be using every day and would be having so much contact with. We purchased the OMI cotton and wool mattress from giggle.com. I considered a non-organic mattress but I could smell the plastic and chemicals and did not want my little baby's face so close to it.

I'm amazed at the things we are just finding out in 2008. Phthalates in our baby products, lead in our baby's toys, harmful chemicals in our baby bottles, etc! They are still doing research on a lot of this to see the effects but how can we not be worried?

unless you are gonna eat it, i really doubt you need to concern yourself with organic bedding. lots of other more important stuff to worry about , like plastic bottles etc...
