Organic Formula with Cane Sugar Versus Regular Formula with Lactose

I have been feeding my 5 month old Similac Organic from birth. Back in May the New York Times article came out stating that Similac Organic uses cane sugar which is much sweeter than lactose and can cause tooth decay when teeth develop, lead to obesity, tendency to favor sweets later on in life, etc. I tried to switch to another Organic formula and had terrible gas issues. I am now debating between keeping my son on Similac Organic or switching him to a non-organic formula that uses lactose for sweetening instead of cane sugar. Which do you think is more important, having a non-organic formula with the better sugar or having an organic formula with the bad sugar?

What can I do next?

Try talking to your doctor about a baby version of Lactaid. Most people are lactose intollerent so the switch could simply be from the type of sugar and not the organic vs. non-organic. WE just started using Lactaid with my 2.5 year old and it is a miracle!

Good Luck

Hello J.,

I'd stick with the sugar cane. lactose is from milk w/ can give you Gastro Intestinal issues. it's very hard to find anything with sugar anymore! everthing is either corn syrup or worse High fructose corn syrup or the other artificial sugars. the argument that sugar cane is much sweeter than lactose it's like a 2 legged stool. it would depend on the amount per serving how sweet it would be. for me now it's regular sugar or no sugar. I'm thinking that 40 - 50 years ago, they used regular sugar for the formula. I don't think that's the cause for this diabetes epidemic. How about the switch to high fructose corn syrup about 25 years ago...corn syrup has to be chemically altered in order to get HFCS ...well, can you tell I'm frustrated that I have to read every label. even "whole wheat" bread ends up with high fructose corn syrup in it (it does help with shelf life). Good luck and google everything. ultimately you'll be deciding what sugars to use. ~Carmen~

We used Earth's Best Infant formula. Our baby started off with gas issues when being breast fed, though this cleared up. He didn't get any gas from the formula. Below is the label as listed on the earth;s best website. As an aside, for gas we had a lot of luck with gripe water. I was not at all convinced that it would work but I was desperate and tried it; magic. Within 2 minutes he quieted down. Then I tried it myself once and I can attest that it really worked. We used mother nature gripe water.

Good luck.

Earth's Best now makes an Organic Baby Formula and there is no sugar in it. I was supplementing my baby with Similac Organic until I found out about the Earth's Best. In the beginning I had to mix the two formulas as he did not initially like the Earth's Best (not sweet enough?!?).
