Is organic forumula better for baby than standard formula? My 7 week old is currently on Gentlease from Enfamil to supplement but am considering trying him on Similac Advance Organic. Any ideas? There are so many different formulas it's making my head spin!

What can I do next?

If your baby is not having any problems digesting the Enfamil formula you are currently feeding him/her then it may be good to stick to it. If you really want to try the Similac Organic than you can but you need to give it to the baby for at least a week to make sure it agrees with him/her. Good luck!

All formulas have to meet the same basic minimum requirements. Although breastmilk will always be superior to formula, there is no such thing as an "inferior" formula among those that are on the market. Whether an "organic" is better depends upon what organic means. There can be different ways of using the word, so you'd need to find out how the "organic" formula differs from the other formulas on the market.

Hi Kristin,

I supplement with Earth's Best Infant Formula. It's an Organic dairy based powder formula. You can get it at diapers.com. I did not want to have to supplement and first tried Enfamil Lipil and to be honest it smelled and looked terrible. Even though I know it was fine for my son I went the organic route and we love the Earth's Best. Good luck and I hope this was helpful.

Hi Kristin, I would definitely try to switch the formula to organic now because the baby has a better chance of adapting to it at this young age. I use the Organic similac formula for my 9 month old-we have been using it since he was released from the hospital. I think every baby should be on organic formula and food. And, if you can, try to make your baby's food from organic produce when she is ready to eat solids. I am a holistic health counselor and will not put growth hormones and pesticide into my child's body. Growth hormones are linked to breast and prostate cancer, and ofcourse, pesticide is linked to every disease imaginable. Good luck and I am proud of you for atleast questioning what you are putting into your baby's precious body. When you get the time, visit a whole foods store near you or google info. about the benefit of eating organic.

We use Parents Choice Organic formula, found only at Walmart. It is certified organic and quite frankly is about half the price of other organic formulas. We used it for our now 2 year old and are currently using it for our 4 month old with no problems. We try to feed our children (and ourselves) as much organic food as possible because we're trying to limit our exposure to pesticides and other environmental toxins.

I have a 7 week old and have put her on Similac Sensitive to supplement because the normal formulas gave her gas & fussiness (Similac Advanced, Enfamil LIPIL, etc). I think the lactose is the issue. Haven't tried the organic yet.

My baby has been on Gentlease also, but simply because he has a "milk thing", otherwise I'd prob have him on organic if it was available in specialized formiula. It is not.(yet)
But really, the biggest thing with organic is personal preference and cost. Baby formula is made within some pretty strict guidelines. For the most part, to be truely organic, EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT must have been grown organically. There are alot of ingredients in formula, Make sure the formula is certified organic or it is not legitimate. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard (and almost impossible) for some ingrediants to be totally organic. And pediatricians don't review formula unless they have a formula rep. who gives them a ton of samples and they happen to like the rep! Plus, if you are breastfeeding, are you eating 100%organic too? Because strangely enough, just like a cow-inorganics can come thru your breastmilk like an open door. Basically what I am trying to say is, formula is made pretty well, save your money for buying organic foods for you, and for when your baby is putting them in his mouth. There are so many other inorganic nightmares in food that formula questions can seem silly. If you start with organic foods, your baby will develope a taste for good foods and your battles may be smaller later on. Organic baby food is some of the best quality on the shelves.
Don't forget to eat locally grown foods too.

Kristin

its not a good idea to keep switching his formulas around,so before you do it, make sure this is the one you plan to stick with.

As far as Organic being better, I dunno, I think its a prefrence,

Organic is better for everybody because it doesn't have the pesticides that get stored in "regular" food. Vegetation that is grown with pesticides encorporates those chemicals in it, so that when we eat the vegetation or the animal that ate the vegetation, the pesticides then gradually build up in our bodies and can cause cancer and dimished immune response to disease.
A longwinded way of saying that if your baby does well digesting the organic formula it is a better choice.
The increased concentration of pesticides in our environment has been suspected of being related to the increased incidence a lot of diseases over the past 50 years.
You always have to assess how your baby responds to any formula, but it's really worth trying it and using it if she reponds well.

I too use parents choice organic formula. I breastfed for about 5 months and then started on the organic formula. I did the same with now 18 month old, and he was not sick for almost his 1st year. I have had no problems with this formula and the price is much cheaper then similac. To be certified organic they have to meet high standards. No hormones. I have noticed my 8 year old starting puberty all ready. When I asked her doctor she said many girls are starting early because of all the hormones in the meats and stuff. I am trying to go organic to avoid this with my other daughter. 8 is just too young she is in 2nd grade. ORGANIC IS BETTER in my opinion.

Hi Kristin,

As a nutritionist, I ALWAYS recommend giving your children as many high quality nutrients as you can. You can rest assured that with a true organic formula, your child will not be receiving any extra hormones, pesticides or antibiotics that may have been fed to the cows and gotten into the milk.

It is so important for their developing little systems to have high quality nutrients and going organic is a way to ensure that you know where their food is coming from and that someone cared enough to spend a little more money and a little more time to ensure that the cow that is now basically feeding your child produced the highest quality milk. It might cost a little more, but the peace of mind you'll get from going organic is well worth the extra few dollars.

Many organic foods have also been shown to be higher in nutritional content and taste better.

Best of Luck to you! When in doubt, go organic!

The best thing to do is NOT give formula to your baby. It is all synthetic. There is a formula you can make from goats milk and adding some vitamins to it. My son loves it. Goat's milk is actually very similar to breastmilk, it is easy to digest and has no side effects.

I work closely with my doctor who gave me the formula. Call Dr. Pram in Fairfield CT ###-###-####

If you are mainly breastfeeding the whole formula switching won't matter that much. As far as Organic, it depends if you are an "Organic" mom. The benefit of it is that it is made from Organic cows milk. The way I look at it is that kids today are getting so many artificial things in their diet (hormones)anyway, if we can eliminate some, why shouldn't we. At this critical time in their lives I would spend the extra pennies, buy a can of Organic powder and supplement with it. I started using Organic milk for my older daughters, and I am slowly trying to switch to all Organic dairy at least.
