Opinions on Easy Bake Oven

I never had one growing up so I don't know a lot about them. I was thinking about getting it for my 7 year old step daughter from Santa. Do any of your kids have one? Do they ever play with it? Is it worth the $$? Frankly, I'm just out of ideas for her for Santa and it's a little more than I want to spend, but if girls really do love them, I'd consider it. Her birthday is 2 days after Christmas I have to come up with more ideas for her than the others in such a short period of time.

TIA!

What can I do next?

meh.... I had a hand-me-down one as a kid. It was lame. I gave one to my niece about 15 years ago when she was about 7, it was just as lame.

My daughter (now 12) has never had one, and if she wants to bake, she does it in my kitchen in the real oven with real food we can all enjoy.

I'd say skip it.
Get her one of those rubber band loom kits instead. They are ALL the rage right now.. and very age appropriate. :)

Don't waste your money. They're overpriced, and the mixes are gross and expensive.

Honestly, the best gift you can give is to teach your daughter how to bake in the real oven. Easybake leaves out the most important parts of baking: Learning to measure, chose and mix ingredients, and understand the science behind baking. It's essentially worthless is you really want to teach her to bake.

Get her a cookbook, apron, a little chef's hat, a few boxes of cake or cookie mix, a big wooden spoon, and put them all in a big mixing bowl. Make time to bake with her. She'll love it. It's too easy to throw some oil, a couple of eggs, water and mix into a bowl and pour it in a pan....and the lessons and memories will last a lifetime.

ETA: My cousin had one. After we ran out of the mixes, we melted Army men and barbie heads in it. That was fun.

The new version is NOT the one you remember from growing up. I got our daughter one because I thought it was so much fun as a kid, but it's not the same. The technology has changed due to lightbulbs changing and the wow factor is gone. It bakes teeny tiny baked goods. Look at your fingertip and that's a cookie. I'm not joking. It's like doll food.

Our daughter used it once and wasn't impressed. It's been unused for over a year now.

How about a kid's cookbook, apron, her own measuring cups, spoons, etc. and maybe a basket of dry ingredients to bake something in the real oven with you.

My cousin says in retrospect she would have just gotten her kid some kid-sized tools and baked with her with the real oven. SD had one as a kid and I don't think I ever saw her use it.

BUT she did use her kid-oriented cookbooks.

Waste of money... The treats you bake are almost inedible they are that bad. At age 7 it is much better to bake a real batch of cookies or cake.

My daughter had one and she did enjoy playing with it. For the record, it is still in my pantry and still works, LOL.

She moved pretty quickly from the Easy Bake to making cupcakes, etc in the kitchen with me. So, it was used a lot in the beginning but once she found out she loved the cooking, she started using our cake pans, etc and making things in our oven with supervision.

I'm in the same boat you are..... my daughter will be 19 on 12/27 so we do a lot of Christmas and birthday. I have both events completely separated so she never feels slighted.

I feel your pain, I have one with a 12/26 bday and another with a 1/5 bday... my little girl is only 4, so I have no clue about today's easy bake oven, but I had one as a kid and played with it a lot!
