Opinion on Flooring

Hi Mom's. I'm curious about what you think. We want to re-floor our bedroom and we are going back and forth between wood laminate or carpet. Did you replace your flooring, with what and what are your thoughts on it now? We like the facts that wood would be cleaner and last longer but we're not sure if we would rather have the carpet because it would be warmer and more inviting. We have a larger room but it is filled with a king bed, two dressers and two nightstands. Thanks for your time Moms :-).

What can I do next?

Personally in a bedroom I think I'd always prefer carpet so it's squishy, warm & comfy. If I was re-doing my living or dining rooms then I'd go with laminate most likely.

As a lifetime allergy sufferer, my automatic response would be laminate! You can always add a small rug by the bed so your feet don't get cold when you get up in the morning.

I like carpet in bedrooms. You get out of bed on to something soft, and can lie on the floor with your kids. Plus, I prefer to vacuum rather than sweep.

I also think wood laminate is in general a bad idea. It looks like wood, but without any of the increased value, and it doesn't wear as well as wood, either. I'm trying to sell my house right now, so we're looking at things like that. Wood laminate is more of a let-down (oh, it's not really wood...) when people find out, whereas carpet is carpet. I know real wood is incredibly expensive, though.

Just my opinion, though. In the end, you should do what you like.

Laminate with an area rug. You can always change the rug or get rid of it all together so it is not as big of a commitment as choosing carpet.

I have a wood floor in my bedroom. I don't think it's any less inviting than a carpet, and it's much easier to clean. Of course, my bedroom isn't big. You could think about wood floors and maybe small rugs at strategic places - such as right by the sides of the bed so you have something cushy to put your feet on first thing in the morning..

Wood (or laminate) with rugs. Less allergies and easier to clean (especially since we have a 3yr old and a 10month old). Of course, I guess it depends on what the rest of your house is, too. I think wood in just one room would look weird. :)

Between those, I would choose wood and a nice rug. I hate carpet.
But actually I just redid the master bath floor. I glued paper down and stained it. It looks like an awesome stone floor. I would like that throughout the whole house. And you sure can't beat the cost.

If those are your 2 choices, I would choose wood. Personally, not laminate... real, hand scraped nailed down hardwoods. They are beautiful.

I actually have contractors at my house today, day #2. We ripped out carpet in a hallway and are replacing it with travertine tile. Most areas in the front area of my house, including a front hallway are travertine. For some reason, we we were building, we weren't thinking and allowed carpet to go in a main hallway.

The travertine is almost done now and OH I love it so much better.

We have a good quality wood floor in the formal area. We plan to put wood in our master bedroom and the office/MIL suite downstairs.

We also plan to use this contractor to put travertine in our family area. The kitchen area is tile as well. All of our tiles are 16 x 16.

After this, the only carpet will be upstairs which is occupied solely by our 17 yr old daughter. After she leaves for college in 2013, we'll probably re-do upsairs.

I vote get rid of carpet anytime you can.

I'm a huge fan of hardwood floors.

Personally I would go with the wood laminate. If you want you can always add an area rug that would be easy to clean.

I hate carpeting. It's impossible to really keep clean, especially with kids and/or pets.
I have wood laminate and tile, and I will NEVER have carpeting or rugs again.
