Hello, I have a 4 year old princess. Also I have nieces that love Hanna Montana, who I did not that until this past Christmas. Since then I saw some of her shows and of course with all the scandal re: her pictures I did not think Hanna Montana is a good program for girls and should not be supported for parents who paid $2,000 for a ticket. I told my nieces that I will not buy nothing for them related to this girl as I do not consider good influence. Does anybody has a comment? Am I being to narrow? Thank you

What can I do next?

I am the mother of two girls, 7 and 11, who also love Hanna. I think it was more a fault of the photographer than the girl. I have spent a long time observing her and think that she is a good girl who is aware of the influence she has. She is very spoiled and has grown up too fast but how can she not be. Her phenomenon is overwhelming. Her show has good moral messages for the most part and her songs are clean. In this crazy world, I feel confident letting my girls listen and watch. I do think you should loosen up, and stay involved with everything she watches. I would never pay 2K for a concert. THat is crazy! And you might want to rethink the princess thing. T

Just my two cents: I personally don't want to buy any mega-merchandised celeb stuff for my 6YO girls or their friends, but rather than saying "I'm not going to buy XYZ because of [fill in opinion here]" I prefer to purchase things like art and craft supplies/kits and encouraging kids to express their own creativity and make cool fun things that are their own style. It's a matter of emphasis - I know that when I was a kid, if adults were saying negative things about something/someone that was popular with the kids, it just made that thing/person seem more interesting to me.
IMO there's plenty of things that kids like that don't have celebrity pics on them so I'd just choose from there when buying gifts and not even mention why I'm not buying anything with so-and-so's picture on it.

Whether or not you like her music or agree with her choices, Miley Cyrus is a very hardworking and fairly talented entertainer.
A princess is a girl/woman who is born into (or marries into) money and status without having to do anything for it.
I question what you consider a "good influence" for your little girl?
Just something to think about...

I know I'm a day late here but my first question: how old are your nieces? Second, do their parents have a problem w/them watching Hanna Montana? If they don't mind, then it's not really your place to tell them that Hanna is a bad influence. Our friends now teenage daugher LOVED Barbie when she was little. I do not & still don't. So, we just bought her other girly gifts that we knew she would like. We never told her why we didn't buy her Barbie stuff.... my opinion of Barbie wouldn't have mattered to her just like I'm sure it won't matter to your nieces what your opinion of Hanna is. To be honest, I think you are over-reacting a bit....the pic was of a small amount of her back. Bathing suits reveal more skin. Geeze, girls shorts shorts, ultra minis & tight cami tops reaveal more skin that Miley did in that pic! And on her shows & in public, Miley Cyrus/Hanna Montana is not scantily clad. In fact, that's the most skin I've seen her reveal. As to the pics that surfaced on the web....she's a 15 yr old girl goofing around who didn't expect her 'friends' to post those pics. I remember trying to be sexy in pics like that at 15 & I'm sure there are plenty of other girls who have done the same. There are also way more horrible influences on kids than Hanna.....drugs, drinking, violence/gangs, sex & teen pregancies....none of which are ever topics of Hanna's shows. The closest thing to a bad influence is the mean, conceited girl who puts everybody down in order to feel better about herself & the fact that she has 2 'friends' w/such low self-esteem that they're willing to put up w/her nastiness. Yep, my boys, ages 7.5 yrs & 3 yrs like her show & I watch it w/them. It's funny, clean, & shows a girl achieving her dreams but still being a 'real' teen w/zits & worries.

I do not think she is that bad either. I let me kids watch her show and even though my daughter is 6 and son is 9 I do think she is a little young for it. My kids have no idea about the picture thing. I do read a lot about her and her family and I think she is a good role model. She is 100% better that Lindsay and Brittney. I took my kids to see the Hannah Montana movie concert for $10. They loved it and it showed them that she has a great work ethic. My kids do not watch a lot of tv but when they do it is usually Hannah or Zack and Cody. Your the mom and you have every right to not participate in the Disney mega takeover. Good luck!

Hi J.,
Ok here's the scoop from me. I have a little girl whos almost 2. She loves Hannah Montana/Miley. I had my daughter watching shows on Disney Channel only because all the shows there are mostly realted to family and good morals. Ok sure Miley may have done something people fear have gone too far- but ya know what?? At least she's not running around pregnant or up on drugs!! Thing of it that way. I mean the girl is only human and sure she may find herself in sticky situations. I had seen the photos and I find there being nothing really wrong. I mean Her parents were there for he most part. I do believe that they were artistic. Sure some may say that it's much too adult for her and maybe it is, but at the same time she is a young girl who happens to be in the public eye and happens to be extreamly talented. I find it no problem if my daugher was to idolize her. she has many messages in her songs about growing up and things like that but still, it's a akward age to be in society with thatmuch talent. i mean ok the tickets... way to much. but what she did unforgiveable maybe, but really its up to the parent to let their child know that maybe how she went about it may have been a bit much and should have only been out for a personal file of her own, but i would tell my child (if she was older that is) is that sometimes people make mistakes in life and sometimes people may find it offensive but if apoligies can correct somethings let it. we already have too much negative things in our lifetime and yes it is a part of growing up. But really it's not really that much to look away at and scrutinize! I mean who are we to really judge who she is by what she had done?? i mean ok so people say she had done something wrong but does that make her a BAD person?? No it just makes us look like fools that we are being too judgemental over this.

I have a 7 1/2 year old and personally do not think Hannah Montana is so bad. Although she was involved in this photo shoot (with her family present) and if you really get to know the specifics - it wasn't like the media portrays (in my opinion). Also it doesn't appear that the fans (younger fans) even know of this photography incident. Of course I would not have paid $2K a ticket (and note that Miley Cyrus was also dismayed when she learned about the ticket prices and publicly told people not to buy them at this price) I do allow my 7 1/2 year old to watch her. She is definitely not like the other teenage stars who are getting knocked up and using drugs. She appears to be well rounded and has morals. I'd rather my daughter watch her then Britney Spears sister or Vanessa Hudgens, etc. They have real issues.

With that said, this is just my opinion and I do not allow my children to watch much tv or go to concerts.

Personally I wouldn’t buy any of her stuff simply because her dad tarnished my sophomore year of high school with that stupid Achy Breaky Heart song AND allowed mullets to make a comeback. :-P

Ok so that was all in fun but I did want to say one serious thing about the pictures. This girl is fifteen years old. Part of being a fifteen year old girl is exploring your sexuality. She unfortunately has the extra burden of living a public life where everyone gets to critique every last move she makes. I think her Vanity Fair photos were quite beautiful and not the least revealing (most prom dresses show a lot more). The stuff that ended up on myspace looked like pretty normal teenage stuff that was sadly exploited by a friend she felt comfortable with. Me and my friends use to take “sexy” photos of ourselves all the time, it’s just part of growing up.

Odd how no one comments on the Vanity Fair photo of her and her dad. I guess beautiful images of a loving parent-child relationship just aren’t the attention grabbing headline sort of thing the media is looking for.

Hi: You are under NO obligation to buy a particular product. There are millions of toys out there. Why do people let a 4 year old or any year old tell them what to do? You are the ADULT. They WILL get over it. If they continue to sulk, it is disobedience and dis-respect and they CAN be disciplined. How about no tv or no listening to music for awhile? When they're older you can explain that you don't want to condone and PAY your good money for these celebritie's immoral lifestyles. I'm with you. I'm sure you've heard the term "You're creating a monster" when parents keep giving into their kids.

I love Hannah Montana show and tape it on the DVR so I can watch with my 7 and 9 year old. Who by the way do not read my Vanity Fair. It's a silly show with a lot of heart about importance of family and being a good friend. We also went and saw the concert movie together and she has a lot of talent. She herself is furious with the system of ticket scalpers paying people to stand in line or online to buy as many tickets as possible. She in many of her concerts asked that they remove vip sections in order to add more seats and make them available to the public. The prices are due to scaler system not the star.
Hannah/Miley you do not have anything to fear.
