Only Walking

My daughter Samantha will be one in two weeks. She has great strength in her legs and can hold her balance for minutes. She can also walk, but is still very cautious. She has no problems bending over to pick objects up off the floor. She seems to be making great progress, but she has skipped some very important steps in her development. She was never a tummy baby and would cry the entire time she was on her tummy. We tried everything to make this time more enjoyable for her, but nothing worked. She hasn't rolled over yet (although I believe she can). She can't get into setting or standing position on her own. And of course, she hasn't crawled. I'm not as concerned about the crawling as I am about the other skills. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice on how to help our daughter fill in those missing skills?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded to my concerns over my daughter not reaching certain milestones such as rolling over, getting into sitting, and getting into a standing position. After I read the responses, my husband and I decided to have her evaluated to make sure everything was okay. Before we could arrange everything though, Samantha decided to roll over, sit, and get into a standing position all on the same day. She is currently on track developmentally, so after speaking with a good friend who is a child PT, we decided not to have her evaluated. I am so gratefull that everything has worked out. And thank you again for all the advice.

I have not had to address all of the concerns that you are having but my Ashley did not start walking until after her 1st Birthday. Rolling over and tummy time were not there either. She hated being on her tummy. She did roll over 1 or 2 times before her 1st birthday but she did not master it until later on , around 14-15 months, now she is a pro. I realized I could not do anything to get her to do the steps fatser, I tried. She only will do things when she is ready, not when I am. Boy, I H. that doesn't last for long. I H. this helps. Every child is different and they do things at their own pace.

Hi H.,
I don't think there is anything wrong with Samantha.i have a two year old who started walking after she turned one..and did a lot of creeping then crawling before that..but i know toddlers who did not go thru creeping and crawling and they just walked.:))and they are perfectly fine..
i think Samantha is one of them...I don't think there is anything to worry about as u say she is a healthy and happy baby..and believe me she did not miss any kind of skills:))
and getting into sitting and standing position on her own..u just wait for a few days..and u will be surprised..

It wud be great if u discuss it with her doctor just to have peace of mind.
Goodluck with her.and hugs to Samantha

hi H.,
My son hated tummy time too and although he eventually started crawling about 2 months before walking. if you are worried talk to your pediatrician. if you want to make those activities more fun try enrollingher in a music class like kindermusic or do a totally physical thing like the little gym where all the kids are encouraged to do movements with their bodies. good luck!

Actually crawling helps with the fine motor skills. I would talk to her pediatrician about your concerns. Ask the dr. if she may need some early intervention(pt, ot, sp) to help her reach her milestones on time. Sometimes its nothing to worry about, but in a few cases it may be something that needs addressed to get the child on the right track. I am a mom of a child with special needs. I see a lot of typical developing children in his therapy center that just need a little extra help.

HI
My daughter is 17 months old and at her 9 month check up was not on target with her gross motor skills. We were referred to the county intermediate unit and she has had free weekly therapy at home since then. She is just starting to walk and crawl all at the same time! Definitley talk to your pediatrician about it!

My daughter was delayed in her motor skills as well. Being that you are from the same area as me you might want to call early intervention. The will send out a physical therapist to evaluate your child. Sometimes it only takes a few visits to correct little problems. Early Intervention can be reach by calling MHMR on New Salem Road, Uniontown.

My advice is to have her start all over with the tummy thing then work on rolling over then crawling. If she doesn't leanr it now then she will fall more behind than the other kids her age. Good luck.

I have a 13 month old daughter, Madelynne who started walking at 10 months. She now runs all over the place. She never really crawled or stood without holding on to something. She went right from sitting up to walking around holding on to thing. Then, on day, she just let go and took 10 steps. She had only been "cruising" about 2 weeks. She completely missed the whole crawling, and unsteady free standing. Now she will stand in place and bend over for things. Maybe Samantha will obtain all these skills you are worried about, just not in the typical order.
