One Adult Flying with Two Babies

I am trying to decide whether to fly to Germany with my sons, who will be 30 months old (2 1/2) and 15 months old in January 2009 to spend a week with my husband. My husband is a touring musician who is out of town, often overseas, for most of the year. If we don't go to the location where he works, then we will rarely see him. I have flown domestically with my elder son and internationally with my elder son while I was pregnant with my younger son, but I've never flown with two kids, a toddler and a baby, as the sole caretaker. I'm a bit concerned about maintaining the safety of my kids. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for your many helpful responses. I don't know whether I'll take the kids to Europe in January, but I will keep your advice in mind when planning any trips we will invariably take in the future.

I commend you for wanting to see him, but I have to ask this, why be married to a stranger, right now you are a single mom just about and the father of your boys, if a week is long enough for the boys to get to know there dad power to you. Why cant he fly home to see you and the boys... this is sure a long way from home, 18 hr flight for only one week. Do this stay two weeks at least it gives the boys time to recover from jet lag, not to mention its going to take two weeks to get these boys back on any schudele.

When I travel with little ones, I always use a tether system so that we don't get separated. There are too many people and distractions in airports. Also I would highly recommend that you purchase a seat for both of them and sit them both next to the window (block them in) It'll be easier to contain them and keep them entertained if they have their own space and tray to eat, color, etc. on. Good luck to you!

Go on as many trips with the kids as you can. I have flown all over the place with little ones. The USA isn't any safer than Europe and keeping your marriage going is very important. We even took little ones to the Far East when the baby was 13 months. I used to say, "More trips for Dad mean more trips for us."
Have fun,

I've travelled internationally multiple times with my two boys on my own. The easiest way is to try to get a direct flight if possible. If available choose a red eye flight or a later flight so that they will sleep for the majority of the trip. Most importantly when you book your trip make sure you request a bassinet. These are located at the bulkheads of international flights and allows you to have the baby sleeping. They do have weight limits for them but tend not to really check, and my youngest was still able to relatively sleep comfortable in the bassinet even though he was too big for it. Gate check your stroller but know that you wont get it back until you clear customs. I have never bothered with taking a car seat on the airplane. My kids have always been happy to sit in the regular seats and it's easier to travel on your own with less bulky items to carry. Depending on the size of your 15 month old then a back pack or baby bjorn helps with getting through customs. A friend of mine has used the harness with the strap on her toddler to keep them closer to her as her kids will not hold her hand. Mine have always been happy to sit in the stroller or hold my hand. The back pack has also been extremely helpful as it keeps your hands free for handling passports. Hope this helps and good luck with your travels!
