So What Happened?

I think it is amazing how some people can be so rude! I cant believe that one lady told me to go to thailand! I didnt ask for safety reports.......... FYI i have to older girls that walked at 8months! and guess what they were in a WALKER. If your kid got hurt by being in a walker its because you werent paying enough attention to your kid. Why would you even let your kid near the stairs in something that moves?????? Of course they are going to be curious and go for the stairs! so thanks but no thanks, keep your nasty reports to yourself.... I might be young but a new mom.

Along with walkers being unsafe, I believe I remember hearing that they are bad on babies' hips. And, they actually can delay walking because babies are relying too much on the walker & not on the stomach muscles needed for stability & movement of the legs all at once. Sorry that I didn't have the answer you were looking for! :)

I agree that I love the style of old walkers also! My friend had one from when her 14 year old daughter was little that she let me use. I would ask M.'s with older children or look at garage sales or auctions. As far as safety is concerned they are dangerous around stairs but as long as you are always able to see your child and use it in moderation I am sure it will be fine! Good luck in your hunt!

You must have received a lot of "personal messages" because the ones posted didn't seem rude to me at all.

Nevertheless, I'm not sure walkers are as "evil" as they're being made out to be either. Remember everybody making a big deal about lawn darts and kids getting injured? It's because the parents didn't teach the kids how to play with them responsibly, and now the rest of the world suffers for the idiocy of a few.

Anyway - I did notice the lack of walkers. I think the trend has gone more towards the "exer-saucer's" The kids still get to bounce and wiggle their feet and stand if they want to, but it's now not mobile so you don't have to worry about the kids getting near stairs. (Again - what parent who is responsible lets their kid at 6 months get near the stairs unattended regardless of being in a walker or not? Those parents who pay attention don't have accident's like that happen!)

It may not be what you're looking for, but the exersaucers might be something to at least consider.

Good luck!

It isn't a good idea to use anything over 5 years old for your younger children. There are so many safety issues involved. The product could be worn down and not safe. Also there are more safety regulations now to protect your child from harm. It's really worth it to buy something newer.

If your talking about the real old ones that fold out? They were discontinued. I don't like the new walkers either half of them aren't even Walkers. When I had my first child my Uncle & Aunt gave me a walker and potty chair they looked like something from outer space. The walker was yellow (no adjusting) solid form of plastic and it started out wide on the bottom & narrowed out as it went to the top. I lost it in a fire so when my third child came around I couldn't find one, it was very protective form of walker, once he tried to take it down a step & it wouldn't go it simply tipped, the seat was solid & had a belt to put around his waist. He flipped and rolled like a ball and never fell out. Actually it was it was funny.

i know some kids who were permanently injured with walkers, don't do it. missing teeth, broken arms, goose-eggs on foreheads... it's just not worth it.

and my chiropractor aunt told me not to put my babies in them until they could sit up on their own because they are really bad for spinal development.

a lot of older stuff is great though-- i hate that everything talks and beeps and blinks now and is made out of cheap plastic...

I think the reason they stopped making them is probably the same reason you have trouble finding one- kids got HURT bad when they would accidentally go down stairs in those things. After that--they came out with Exersaucer, etc. Things that sit still but baby exercises legs.

most older baby equipment is not available due to changing safety guidelines, intending to keep kids safer. Walkers, even the ones they manufacture now are not a good idea for any baby. As our pediatrician said, if your baby was meant to be mobile, they would move themselves...
