We haven't changed their food, nor have we given them anything different. What can I do? Feel like I'm suffocating here. Disgusting!

What can I do next?

I know this sounds gross, but they might be eating their own poop. If you don't immediately scoop it they might be getting into it and eating it. Also they might have gotten into something else like people food.

If and when our dog has gas it is food related but if your dog gets into "garbage ", eating things besides his/her food I learned that they have these sacs in their rectum that can fill with poop and sometimes the sac needs to be popped to get rid of the horrible gas. Like I said we haven't had to do this withour dog but my brother in laws dog needs it all the time. whenever their dog starts getting horrible gassy farts they go outside and put on gloves and have to stick their finger in the rectum to pop the sac. They use to bring their dog to the vet to get this done but then they learned how to do it themselves. So try calling your vet and see if this could be the problem.

I notice more gas in my dog when I give him the chewy-type treats (snausages, Puperoni, etc.) He doesn't seem as gassy when he gets dry bones....
Got any noseplugs? :-)

Can I ask which brand of food you are feeding them? Some of the dog food brands will change their recipe due to what may be cheaper or they not be consistent with formula. It can be those small changes that can upset a dog's stomach.

Also, it's spring are the dogs eating leaves and grass? That can cause gassiness.

You can try adding plain NO added sugar or artificial sweetener yogurt to their food.

I ended up switching my dogs to a raw diet after much research. They were so gassy that I had to air out the house. It was horrible!

I feel your pain!!! I have 3 large dogs which all 3 love to TRY (and yes, they try so hard!) to sleep in bed with me and my husband... then it is really bad if one of them has a gas pain! But if you go to Petsmart or Petco, cant remember which one, they have an all natural dog food. But there are some natural foods and snacks that should help your dog with their gas. I know this because my husband and I happen to stumble upon these things and we laughed cause we just thought it was funny... But they really do make stuff to help the dogs!!!

Are we just really blessed at our house??? Our GSD almost NEVER has gas issues. The few times I can specifically say she did, she had a stomach bug or had eaten something unusual (cat poop, new dog treats, new food). That's about it. Maybe it is related to their food? What brand do you feed?

One of our dogs was really gassy - we had just adopted him (he was 6 years old). The fed him Ol Roy. We switched him to Nature's Recipe - it has no wheat, corn or beef. Now, NO GAS. We also use it b/c our other dog has food allergies which causes skin problems. This food also helps with that.

We used to give our dogs Tums. Seemed to help them. We had big dogs, might need to split the dose for a small dog.

I enjoyed reading answers~~ we have 2 dogs. one never gets gas the other one...well he's our go to guy to cover when anyone farts in our house.
he's worse if we change foods or treats which you haven't done...and also with changing seasons. I never thought about a correlation with that and his exercise but when I read that post it clicked...we don't exercise as much in rainy/snowy weather and that is when he is worse. so good for me. :) I learned something.
I was going to add that we feed my dog plain yogurt just a spoon of it a couple times a week and it really helps as well and isn't as expensive as probiotic pills.

HI B.,

I give my dog a doggie treat/vitamin that has helped reduce the amount of gas he has. He didn't get really gassy until he was diagnosed with heartworms (yes we had him on prevention) but it got awful to the point where we would leave the room. Part of this may be he is more sedentary than he used to be.

I agree with Gailski that probiotics might helps as well.

What kind of dogs do you guys have? I know that some breeds can be overly gassy all the time no matter what you do because they have shorter muzzles and pushed-in faces (brachycephalic). This causes air to be gulped and forced into the gut continuously and that ends up being a huge culprit of the smelly situation. I have three dogs and all are brachycephalic. Two are Shih-Tzu's and one is a Puggle. All three of them can knock out an elephant if they had to. They are snorters, snorers, and the Puggle even produces a reverse sneeze which sounds like a bad asthma attack or a mad goose if she gets too worked up and excited. All of it produces gas. Our vet always told me to keep the carb content in their foods low and simple. The big offenders are corn, wheat, gluten, vegetables, and anything with a spicy flavoring. Proteins, rices, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and quinoa are the less gassy products that can be found in quality dog foods. Our vet also lets us use Beano for the dogs if the gas is reaching a level that we are finding hard to tolerate. It does work and is harmless to the dogs. Most of the time we just deal with it and pray to God that they don't all gang up on us and decide to have a bad night. I know how you feel about this subject. One of our dogs sleeps under our bed and many a night my husband or I will actually be woken up by the fumes coming from beneath us! UUUGGGHHHH! Sometimes we forget the dog is under the bed and have actually accused one another of owning up to the stench until we realize that it is our furry boy under the bed that started the whole problem! You are not alone......other are dying with you!

BaHAHAA!! ...oh man I laughed so loud at this I startled my husband!

We rehab and foster pit bulls - and let me tell you, I've been run out of the room many times!

Its been my personal experience that exercise helps gassiness. But thats about it. If nothing is different with their food, and they haven't been eating various bits of nature out in the yard or something... thats probably your best bet.

That, and Febreeze! : )

Gas is produced by bacteria in the gut.

Maybe you can give probiotics.

Biotin, a b vitamin, is suppose to feed good bacteria..

Infections or parasites might cause gas. You can google that.

I recall reading that soy can cause gasiness.
soy is HEAVY in dog foods. and people processed foods for that matter.
