OJFF: Kids Who Don't like Bologna?

Updated on November 01, 2012

I was reading the answers to a question regarding bologna sandwiches and was surprised to see that there are kids who don't like bologna! Really? I have only met one kid who doesn't like bologna, and he doesn't like meat at all! My kids are the pickiest kids I know, and they love it! When I was a kid I rarely got to have it, because it was sort of junk food, so when I did get it it was a big treat! Bologna, processed cheese slices and wonder bread was to me as good as McDonalds. So, do your kids like bologna?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I should mention that I also love hot dogs, and so do my kids.

I realize that bologna and hot dogs aren't particularly good for you (although they are good sources of protein), but sometimes we do eat things that aren't so good for us.

I also like salami, kielbasa, summer sausage, garlic sausage, farmers sausage, bacon and pepperoni.

My favourite bologna is Winnipeg Old Country Bologna, made right here in Winnipeg. They make all the best sandwhich meats, and great hamburger patties too.

I'm hungry now too!

What about MortadellaÉ

I hate it (and always have). When we were too broke for anything but baloney as a kid... The other kids would have B Sammies. I'd have a mayo sammie. Yuck. Gag. Ick.

My son dislikes it (aka not as much as I hate it. He'll peel it off a sandwich and still eat the Sammie... I can't eat the Sammie, because I can still taste the gross). And won't eat it, period.

LOL ... It's not a copycat thing. He LOVES when he likes something I don't (like tuna, or Reese's)... Because he lives seeing the face I make / totally hams it up.

It's also not a processed food thing. I LOVE about 90 kinds of salami (but I hate cotto salami), prosciutto, hams, hotdogs (most but not all hotdogs, though), liverwurst, etc. It's just that baloney tastes like rancid puss and rotting meat. <gag gag choke!>

Also... Most balogna contains pork. Which is banned by 2 out of 3 major religions. So fortunately, its not something that comes up often (most of our friends being Jewish or Muslim.

Intersting reading the first few responders.

I ate bologna when I was a kid. My mom would occasionally get a good deal on un-sliced bologna and we'd eat a piece of bologna with a piece of cheese and a saltine cracker like an Hors d'oeuvre.

I like fried bologna and my kids had bologna when they were growing up. I don't actually know if my grandkids eat bologna or not. Its full of fat and salt, but people eat at McD, and Burger King, Wendy's and more deli's than I can possible write down. People eat processed foods on their Subways and Quiznos and various other subway type restaurants. Why wouldn't they eat bologna? A rose by anyother name is still a rose.

Hot dogs are just shaped bologna.

Good luck to you and yours.

I remember my gradma making me a bologna sandwich when I was about 7 or 8 and I found a hair embedded in the bologna. The hair was actually sticking out of the meat. It was disgusting and I think about that every time I see bologna or hear someone talk about it.

My kids have never had bologna--for deli meat I do pretty much just the Hormel all natural products (ham or turkey) which are minimally processed and have no preservatives (like nitrates, which may be carcinogenics).

My kids have never had bologna. I had a lot of it as a child and that's probably why I haven't bought it. It's a bit expensive too. So, if I have to decide between deli meat or bologna, I will always pick deli meat.
I had a bologna and cheese sandwich a couple of years ago and it felt like I was transported back to childhood. The next day I went to make another and I just couldn't eat it! Don't know why.

We don't eat it often, but I grew up eating bologna.
It was good cheap food when our Mom was poor and struggling to make ends meet.
Sauteed onions with bologna cut in strips and then scrambled in with eggs was a meal we had often for breakfast or dinner.
I love a good kielbasa but it's hard to find a good one.
Our favorite growing up was Redlinski's smoked kielbasa from the Broadway Market in Buffalo NY.
The farmers' cheese pierogis were out of this world!
We like liverwurst, and pepperoni, too.
The only coldcuts I never liked was olive loaf and tongue.
You can't eat like that all the time, but a few times a year as a treat is nice.

Can't stand bologna. I don't even consider it real meat, frankly. It even smells hirrble to me. My mom was a home ec/nutrition major in colllege and there was no way that bologna, much less any processed for, was going to making into the shopping cart, or through the front door when I was growing up. Bologna is just plain horrible to me.

Yes, I have tasted it a few times as a kid, mostly at a friends house. I took an obligatory 2 bites to be nice sort of thing, but it tasted bad to me, so I would not eat any more. Ick.

One of my kids eats pretty much everything. The other one is the pickiest kid. He has sensory/texture issues I am sure. He hates bologna...and most foods. He hates cheese. He hates most fruit. He won't eat most pizza...sometimes pepperoni pizza is ok but it has to be just a certain way. There's not a single sandwich he will eat. He won't eat hotdogs or hamburgers. He won't eat sausage. Sometimes we can get him to take about 2 bites of bacon but that's all. He will not even eat most desserts or baked goods. He has his list of about 10 foods he will eat and that's it. We have tried everything and we cannot get him to expand his palate. It's the most annoying thing ever, honestly. I feel like I have a freak for a child (no, I don't ever let him know I am thinking this). Thank goodness my other child eats almost everything, otherwise I would blame myself. The good eater is 3 and the picky eater is 8 (and has always been this way).

I used to be one of those kids. I have never liked bologna, hot dogs, ham sausage, bacon, anything smoked (love oven roasted turkey breast, do not like smoked turkey - tastes just like ham to me, yuck!) People would say, "Just try it." I have. Many times. I was always jealous of people who love hotdogs. Hotdogs are at so many events - baseball games, cookouts, school festivals. What do I get to eat? Popcorn. Not exactly the same thing. Definitely not as filling.

There are always going to be kids that don't like something, no matter how many kids do.
