Oily Hair - Milwaukee,WI

I have to wash my hair every day because of my oily hairline. If I go longer than that it looks like I painted grease on my hair. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for remedies or good shampoos for oily hair. I really appreciate it. :)

What can I do next?

My hair was really oily like you are saying... I switched shampoos to Aussie shampoo, and only conditioned my hair every other wash. It kept the washing down to 3-4 days a week instead of all 7. :)

I too have oily hair.. I have cut out conditioner completely and it's much better. If my hair starts to feel too dry then I will rub conditioner on the ends of my hair. no where near the root.

I am a hairdresser and all of the above are good answers. I have another that might work also....I recommend to my clients that instead of washing every day, wet the hair on the days you don't shampoo. When you wet the hair, massage the scalp and bring the oils from your scalp down your hair shaft. This does 2 things..first it breaks up the oils on your scalp and second it uses those oils to condition your hair. Also, just a thought, but your hairline could be oily because of your facial moisturizer. I say this because it is odd that it is just your hairline that is oily.
Hope this helps

you have oily hair because you wash your hair daily. please know that this is a fact. I only wash my hair every 5 days. That used to be the case for me. I used to wash it every other day (and it would be so oily starting the night before the 3rd day). Now, I wash it every 5 days. At first it was hard...a gradual transition...from washing every other day to every 3 days, then 4 days..now 5 days. And even on the 5th day, it doesn't even look oily, although I can feel the oil coming in. I recommend trying this..and where a hat for the first 2-3 weeks!

What happens is because the more you wash it..the dryer your scalp gets, and hence..your body tries to compensate my producing MORE oil.

If you go to a professional salon, they don't recommend daily washing. And many women now would go get their hair shampooed & styled at a salon and then come back once a week (7 days) to do it again. If i had money to go to a salon and get my hair styled once a week, I'd do it too! :) Trust me, it's not dirty. Your hair looks great and healthy. Again, I'm not saying.."don't shower daily"..just not shampoo daily. LOL Where a shower cap. :)

My daughter has this problem (puberty). Paul Mitchell's, Organix, or Fantasia's Tea Tree Shampoos work good. Also Aveda's Rosemary Mint Shampoo does a good job at invigorating the hair. Only put conditioner at the bottom of your hair (not near the scalp).

Try a hair powder! If you have a sephora close, that's your best bet. I don't like the Oscar blandi one because it smells like lemon. Or if you have light enough hair, baby powder can work too, or a dark-pigmented loose powder (l'oreal and cover girl make them) for darker hair. I swear by it! Then you can wash every other day..save shampoo, time, and sanity! Ad I second the aveda Rosemary mint shampoo, as well as conditioning only your ends.

I haven't read the other posts so I may be repeating....

I too have oily hair (not quite as bad as you stated yours is) and I've asked my hairdresser. She said that it gets more oily when you wash it so much b/c washing it drys out your scalp so it kicks into higher gear to react to that. She said if you can go a few days w/out washing (for an extended period of time) then you can better regulate the levels of oil.

I hope that helps!

Hi K.:
I too have an oily scalp. I perm my hair and that seems to help control the oil issues. A friend of mine would color her hair and that also seemed to help. As far as shampoos or conditioners I never found one that worked. I even tried lemon juice while I was in High School, all that did was lighten my hair. Vinegar is supposed to help but I could never get past the smell so I never tried it.

Good luck~~ let us know what works for you.

Try washing your hair with the minimum of shampoo. I used to wash my hair twice and that caused my scalp to produce even more oil. I also only condition the ends of my hair. But before that and after I shampoo, I use a vinegar rinse. My favorite is brewing chamomile tea in two cups of water, then add 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar. But you can just add 1 tbsp of AC vinegar to 2 cups of clean water. You may rinse it out, or not. Then I conidition my ends.

You might want to try a peanut butter mask. I've found that the more you strip oils from your hair, body, the more oil your body produces.

I had this problem too, I learned that when you shampoo your hair you should really rub it into the scalp and all over......but when you condition your hair you should only condition the ends......Not the roots....and rinse with cool water

really helped me!

Aussie is really good. also, when my hair gets really oily, i add a little bit of Johnson's baby shampoo - the shampoo and conditioner combo, the one i use is blue - it doesn't take much of it, leave it in for a few minutes and then rinse. cleans out the oil great for me.

I used to wash my hair everyday because it was oily.I found that the deep cleansing shampoo by Pantene is good and also finish your hair with a cool water rinse this helps it to stay clean. Also lather your hair twice and leave it on for a minute before rinsing it,and don't use a conditioner.Hope I've helped you.

My hair is an oil slick. You really need one that strips it. It's harsh as heck on your hair and I color it so it makes it better and deep condition once every two weeks... But inbetween I look fine still.

I've found that sauve clarifying is what I think they call it currently is great and best for it. A stylist actually told me that. It strips everything off your hair and it's a buck! She told me all the expensive ones on the shelf over there do the same thing for a bunch more. lol

So that is what works for my oil slick.

Oh and if you have light hair baby powder at the root of your hair can do wonders if you can't wash it and you don't want to look horrible. Just put it on sparingly and brush it through your hair.
