Odd Cramp/contraction Pains

Hello Moms-
I have a 6 month old baby girl and since she was born I have had 3 "attacks" with abdominal pains. They feel like severe PMS cramps, as bad as early contractions with labor. They occured when she was 1 week and 4 weeks old so I assumed it was an after labor thing.. then happened again Labor Day weekend. This last attack was so bad, I was vomiting. They last about 6-8 hours. I mentioned it to my OB at my annual check and she suggested a gall bladder ultrasound.. well that came back normal with no problems showing. Has anyone experienced anything like this? What could it be.....

What can I do next?

I agree with the other mom's on the IBS... I have IBS and after I had my daughter it was horrible for about the first 6 to 7 months.

I read some of the other emails and I agree with them.
Ask the doctor for an ultrasound of your uterus and ovaries. Maybe you have endometrioses and have her look for cysts or growths on your ovaries. If you had an ecoptic pregnancy that would have been painful and life threatening and you would have been in the hospital already.

Have your kidneys checked out. I was told that passing kidney stones is as painful as birth pains. Have your colon checked out also. Good Luck.

Hi H. -- Have you ever knowingly had a panic attack? I ask this because when I was younger, I had the pain that you described, with an overall feeling that my stomach was coming up with an awful burning sensation. All I could do was lay on the floor, feeling like I'd die. After much testing w/ everything being normal, I later realized that I had had a couple of panic attacks! These can come on out of the blue. I'd be happy to share more with you if you PM me.
If you think you might have endimetriosis or IBS, I have something that can help that, ask me about that as well. I know how horrible that is to live with, and people shouldnt' have to suffer!

H....I had the exact pains you are describing, sometimes they were higher up and felt as if I was having a heart attack. My case became so severe that almost anything I ate would make me sick and have attacks of pain. Over weight to begin with I thought nothing of it until the weight started to drop so quickly I looked gauntly. My Dr. had an ultrasound performed, NEGATIVE! I then went to a surgeon who performed a scope and a GI scan with a radioactive dye that shows what does and doesn't work properly. She decided to do exploratory surgery for the gall bladder, good thing because it was only working about 10-20%!! No stones, but not working. Through the entire ordeal I dropped 100lbs to quickly and was very sick. Now I suffer with hiatal hernia, gastritis and ulcers, everyday taking medications. Hopefully this helps, but keep on the doctors and ask if there are any other tests that should be performed. With two little girls, we all know there is never a good time for moms to get sick. Good luck to you..

I have had something somewhat similar happen with me. I thought I was having a heart attack though. The pain was high up under my ribs. I had an ultrasound done as well with normal results. So, my doctor gave me a prescription for indigestion/heartburn, but it isn't helping.

Could you be pregnant again? Is it associated with anything in particular like eating, feeding your daughter (if you are breastfeeding) or anything like that? Did your OB do a thorough check at your appointment? It could be an infection of some kind, though I doubt it because that would probably be more of a constant pain, but it's worth checking out.

God bless,
A.

H. I had the same thing they thought it was gall bladder too. Turns out my stomach wasn't emptying properlt which was causing the pain. See if there is anything that you eat that causes it or if you over eat or maybe you havn't ate all day and finally eat.

Wow ~ I feel for you.

I had symptoms very similar to that for 5 years, accompanied by dark urine. My doctor blew me off (after I presented him with a urine sample), telling me nothing was wrong with me. We had no health insurance at the time, so I couldn't afford to go to another doctor for a second opinion.

Four years later, I went to a friend's sister, an integrative M.D., who agreed to work out a patient arrangement with me. She initially suspected gall bladder issues.

I had an attack that was so bad, I was doubled over in pain, and had to rock back and forth moaning the whole time to even withstand the pain. Then, the vomiting began.

My husband took me to the hospital, where they did a full abdominal ultrasound and found a kidney stone that was far too large to pass. It had been getting stuck at the exit from the kidney to the ureter, blocking off kidney function. I was admitted right away, and had surgery the following morning. Apparently, my pain was not located in the typical position for kidney stones, and that's why my case went undiagnosed at my first visit, 5 years ago.

Most kidney stones can be blasted with a laser and then will pas normally. Unfortunately, mine wouldn't cooperate for that, so the surgery was necessary.

Get help immediately to find out if this could possibly be a kidney stone. If it is, it can be treated efficiently and you can avoid further attacks of that terrific pain. I've never experienced anything like it.

I know I have this when my irritable bowel acts up. It comes and goes. Which you could be experiencing that is why it doesn't happen all the time. It is worse around my period b/c of all the inflimation of my bowels and my ovaries down below. Sometimes the pain from below shoots up to the sides of my tummy. I went to the ER b/c of the pain and that is where they diagnosed me. Once I went on meds it has helped tremediously I only seem to need them when I am stressed out and when we are traveling. That is when everything flares up. Best of luck~ J.

Do you possibly have endometriosis? That can cause pain mostly around that time of the month, but in some cases it can cause pain any time. I have this, and the cramps were equivalent to my labor pains (I am now on the birth control shot to help with this). Another thought...I know you said abdominal area, but is there a chance you have kidney stones? I never had them until I got pregnant, and now I am still getting them... they hurt me bad enough to make me sick. That pain hurt me from my side, just above my hip bone all the way down. Good luck and I hope you find your answer.

i have similar pains & have been diagnosed w/ IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) which i think is a crock of pooey, really (b/c they don't know what it is, how to treat it, etc). some symptoms of IBS stop during pregnancy & then re-start w/ a vengeance after the birth. mine has (i just delivered in late august). they really do feel like labor pains & contractions. you should see your regular doctor!

Are you sure you weren't ovulating? I had worse pain at that time than I did during most of my labor. Ask about endometriosis. That could also be the cause.
As for the gall bladder generally the pain is up higher but it can be extremely severe and cause vomiting. My gall stones didn't show up on the tests until I had been living on pop cycles for over a week, 6 months after the problem started. I would cut out greasy foods, nuts, etc. and see the problem continues.

Could it be ovarian cysts? My sister has them and she describes the attacks the same way you do.

Hello, I had the same thing and it was my gallbladder the attacks got worse each time. My ultrasound showed no stones so they said it was ok but I had an infected gallbladder that had to be removed I would suggest finding a doctor to run more tests to be sure. I had cat scan ultrasound and mri to find it. I had the surgery at Riverside Hospital in Columbus my surgeon said it was very common after pregnancy to have gallbladder troubles. Good Luck
