I to had to use Nutramigen for my now 5 year old daughter. It worked fine and thankfully she grew out of her milk and soy problems. She was less colicey after a week. I also breast fed so when I changed my diet (no milk,or soy, or broccili) I noticed an improvement in about 1 and 1/2 weeks

Good luck

Wic usually only gives vouchers for Simlac and in some other cases Enfamil brands and speciality formula with a doct.prescription. They must not have a contract or deal with Good Start because they never hand that brand out.

My son was born in Dec. 2007 and we are on WIC. We had a lot of problems with finding the right formula. We did try Nutramigen and he threw it up immediately...absolutely hated it. Plus, Nutramigen is extremely expensive and WIC will require a prescription from your baby's doctor before paying for it. I have since then switched my son to a soy formula which he is thriving on. He is currently using the Similac Isomil soy based formula which is covered by WIC.

We switched to Nutramigen when we discovered that our son was allergic to milk and soy. We did mix in a little soy at first so he could adjust to the taste. We now just give him straight Nutramigen and it works great.

My pediatrician told me when my kids were on formula that most all brands are the same thing different label. I always chose the least expensive one on the shelf. Usually the Target brand, and I asked if it was just as good and he told me that it was. I think too many of us think that if it costs more it is better. It is just not true in so many cases. I never had to use soy formulas, but I am sure you can find one that will work and be covered in the cost. If they are willing to pay for a certain kind go for it. You can always switch back if your baby can not drink that particular brand.

WIC is suppose to cover all formulas that have a prescription written for them, no matter what kind of formula it's for. You most likely got a nurse that's brand new and is going by the book, however, that book is only a guideline and nothing is written in stone. When you go in, tell her the price difference and that you just want to save the program the money. I used to hate it when the WIC program would get a newbie.

My son had to go on Nutramigen when he was a baby. This is known as the liquid gold formula as it is the most expensive on the market. My son's stomach could not handle any other formula as it upset his stomach. This was milder than the soy. The molecules in this formula are extremely small so his stomach could break this down to digest. Most peds prescribe this formula if the baby is experiencing any signs of acid reflux. Four years ago we were paying $250.00 per month for this formula. Strange that WIC won't cover the soy but will cover the Nutramigen. Good luck.

My granddaughter, that I am raising, had a real problem the first 2 months of life. She spit up more than normal and stopped breathing on occasion. Finally she was diagnosed with an esophagus that doesn't function properly so food stayed there. Then as the stomach was empty, it's acids was rise up and push formula til it blocked her airway. Docs put her on Prevacid (calms the acid) and Good Start Soy formula.

Anyways, we were receiving WIC and all we had to do was get a "formula doc" and a prescription from doctor and the WIC program gave us the soy formula each month. Have you checked with your WIC office to see if this is possible? I am in Wisconsin and I see you are in Illinois, but I believe most WIC programs are very similar. Explain the issues with your child's Gerd (acid reflux) and that your current formula seems to do better for him.

My daughter had to be on Nutramigin due to having reflux and being a projectile vomiting after a bottle. The nutramigin helped A LOT!! She did throw up sometimes, but not like it was. We had to control how fast she ate her bottle. I too was on Wic, but have you taken a look at the cost of Nutramigin?? $25 for the smaller can. I think I got like 8 cans a month and toward the end of her 1st year we had to buy a can to make the formula last.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask your pedi either -- mine had to write a perscription for wic so I could get it from them. Also if you do switch - ask your pedi for any sample cans they ahve. Mine was always willing to give me a couple extra every couple months i was in during the 1st year for checkups.

Good Luck!

Many times if a dr. makes a perscription for a certain formula I believe WIc will cover it. My friend had pediasure covered for her child because he was not gaining weight.

I think its odd they are suggesting Nutrimagen because its more costly than soy and they should just be able to switch you to another formula similiar to the one you are on. Especially since Nutrimagan is like $23 for a small can. I've had to use Nutrimagen because of my daughter's severe eczema as a baby and I had given them a dr.s note since Nutrimagen at that time was not on the list of the type of formula they handed out. Good luck!

Yes but call your son's pediatrician in the morning and ask her to write a prescription for the good start soy . Katie is now 3 but for her first year we had Orange county pharmacy deliver it right to our door every 13 of the month. and cost was covered by our insurance. One other thing we went Thur 8 formulas b4 we used good start and we loved it. And so did her gurd and acid reflux. Her reflex muscle in her throat has not developed to this day and still has a lot of throw up. We have just learned to deal with it. As a parent its our job. lol good luck and congrats be straight and let them know this is what you want>>>

I have not used that type of formula, but I too was on the WIC program when my son was a baby. I may know something that can help. When my son needed a special formula (Enfamil AR) my pediatrican wrote a note to WIC as kind of a prescription. I am not sure how WIC works where you are, I am in North Dakota, but when my ped wrote the note, WIC had to provide the formula. Maybe if you explain to your DR that you really do not want to change formulas' on your baby again, she/he may be willing to do it for you. Good Luck

Yes, we used this with our son after much colic and other issues. He did beautifully on it. I've been told it's better balanced that the Good Start brand. Isn't that made by Carnation? Ultimately, I would ask your child's doctor. But we would use Nutramagin again if needed, without reservation.

I do not know what wic is,but my son used nutramigen. he went on it at 8 weeks and improved within one day. He is still on it however we are introducing milk and dairy products and he is handling it very well and he is now 9 months. Nutramigen is expensive ($25-$30 a can) but I purchased it on ebay so I got bargains on never been opened, not expired cans. The stuff is liquid gold, as my friend called it!

I've not used that particular formula, however, I would ask your dr. to write a "prescription" for the formula you are currently using so that WIC can then allow you to put that formula on your vouchers. We had to do that with my oldest daughter as she was allergic to the WIC formula. Hope that helps...

Hey there
I had the same situation when my daughter was little. She needed to be on soy formula and WIC didn't want to pay. But I had my doctor write a prescription for it and then they had no problem paying for it. I think they just want to be sure that the doctor has advised it and it's not just you switching back and forth. Maybe your WIC office will accomodate you if you have a prescription, and good luck to you!

I had to use Nutramigen with boys my boys when I couldn't breastfeed anymore. It is extremely expensive because it's completely broken down and pre-digested for the most sensitive of stomachs. Therefore, I would not use it unless I had to. If soy is working well for your son, I would stick with soy and explore which brands WIC would cover. Here's the link to the WIC database of covered soy-based formulas:

Good luck!

I've used soy and Nutramigen. I wouldn't give Nutramigen if it's not necessary. I don't understand why WIC won't give soy to you because Nutramigen is twice the price.
Is there another kind of soy that they will give? We didn't use WIC for soy but we did for Nutramigen so I don't know.
I would just try to get a prescription. Some kids need soy, mine had milk protein allergy and couldn't breastfeed or use regular formula so we had to use soy for her.
Hope this helps,

I have been told that you cna go to your pediatrician and ask that he write you a prescription for the formula he is on so that WIC will not change it. Then they can cover it. if your doctor says Don't change then they can't make you and they need to help you in whatever way they can. I would say its worth the try. My son was on Nutramigen for awhile and then back to Soy but I used the Prosobee. It did not work well in the beginning but then he started to outgrow his collic and then it was fine. So we changed formulas a lot. I would not suggest doing that if you can help it.

We noticed a huge difference with Nutramigen--our twin girls were premies and had trouble digesting the regular formula. Once we switched to Nutramigen, they were much happier within a few hours! Our doctor called it "liquid gold," because it was such a difference maker.
