I'm not sure where you are located, but have you tried Freecycle? The link is http://www.freecycle.org/groups/
and depending on how active the group is in your area, you might be able to find stuff on there. We have baby stuff offered all the time on ours. Good luck!
You could also check with a flooring store and see if they have any carpet squares that they would donate. Sometimes you have to buy them, but if you tell them it is for a church nursery, they might donate them.

What kind of items do you need? I do run a second hand/ retail store for children downtown Olympia called The Chifferobe. Let me know what you need, and we can work something out.

Go check out www.freecycle.org. "The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,234 groups with 4,421,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free." As well as being able to post stuff that you'd like to give away, you can post items that you need and people will get a hold of you if they have it! It' such a great thing! Good luck!

You could try posting for your items on www.freecycle.org. You may have to drive around and gather the items. But I have found many items this way for our moms club. There should be a local freecycle for your area.

Check out craigslist for free items.
You can even post items wanted.

Can I ask how you have a six year old daughter and are a grandma to 7 children? Just wondering about the logistics!
