My 15 month old daughter drinks all the time she will constantly cry for more juice or water. Its getting to the point were I am having to change her diaper every hour and it dosnt matter what diapers I buy for night time she soaks them. And this weekend she got a very bad diaper rash it is starting to go away now but I am thinking it had something to do with all the juice she drinks. I water it down to about 30% juice and 70% water so that maybe she will not get diaper rash but still I cant believe how much che drinks. She usually drinks 2-4 sippy cups of juice or water an hour we try to distract her but after about 20-25 minutes she will go to the refigerator and stand it front of it and cry. Other than this one thing she acts and looks like a healthy child. I dont know if I should just give her as much as she wants to drink or try to limit it.

What can I do next?

She dosnt really care what you give her to drink she is just thirsty all the time but I wanted to thank everyone for their advice except for the one person that wrote I was going to make her diabetic????can you even do that? She also stated that even adults are only suppose to have 2tablespoons of juice every 4 hours??Lady what are you thinking...Also why would I want to not give her any juice or milk at all I think that would just be mean plus she is suppose to have milk she's only 15 months...anyways thanks to everyone elese.

How is she eating? Is she eating plenty? I agree with the others that it's a sign of diabetes. Also, a lot of problems that adults have is they get the hungry feeling when they need water but, they think they are hungry so they eat instead of drink. Is it possible that she's drinking instead of eating well?

You should go to the pediatrician immediately just to cover your bases, but don't necessarily freak out about everyone saying it is diabetes. My son is also obsessed with juice and our pedi had us take him off all juice completely - no exceptions!!!! It was a rough few days because he refused milk or plain water. But sure enough he began drinking milk and now he drinks his standard two cups a day without complaint. You are right that the diaper rash is almost definitely caused by the juice. Get her off the juice and watch that clear up and hopefully the extreme thirst will also. By the way, we tried just about every diaper cream on the market, and BY FAR the best is Bert's Bees Diaper Ointment. It worked wonders for us when nothing else did. Good luck, don't worry. Go to the doc, and if by any chance it does turn out to be diabetes, there are plenty of resources to help you. I have a good friend who's 6 year old was diagnosed a couple of years ago and she is very involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I'd be happy to get you in touch IF it came to that.

Yes--take your child to the doctor and let the dr. know what has been going on. My child has Type I Diabetes and that was one of her symptoms at diagnosis. Excessive thirst can be a sigh of high blood sugar. And for the record--you can not cause your child to become diabetic. Giving a child lots of juice is not healthy, but you can not cause Type I diabetes (I read another poster suggested that you could) It is an autoimmune disease like lupus or celiac.

Don't ever give a child juice. In fact no person should be taking more than 2 tsps. of juice in a 4 hr. period. It's got too much sugar. The body cannot handle that much sugar and it expells it quickly in children causing them to dehydrate. You could literally cause your child to go into a diabetic. Water only. If she is not breastfeeding, no milk. Ween them off juice and milk asap. She likes the sugary taste of the juice and could be addicted.

Water only.

If she stands in front of the fridge and cries, remove the child from the front of the fridge, hand her water, and play a game, smile and laugh and do a funny face to distract her attention. Or get bubbles at the store and blow them with her. She will love it.

My first thought was diabetes.
My son had watered down juice and still does... but only a couple times/day. That is balanced with milk/water...
Sounds like the rash is from acidics in the juice. Try acidophilis powder (whole foods or GNC). Or Yogurt... lol This will help with the acid thing...
According to Dr. Sears: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T043200.asp, your daughter should not have more than 6 oz per day... watered down, it means probably two sippy cups full.

GOOD LUCK

I agree that this is not normal. That seems like an awful lot of fluids to me. If you are going to give her anything, you should limit her to one cup of juice per day (diluted). Give her milk with meals and the rest should be water. Does she cry until she gets the juice or does she drink the water just as much? I think I would call the pediatrician on this one. Something isn't right and if she is diabetic, you need to know that ASAP and get it under control.

Extreme thirst and frequent thirst may be a sign of diabetes. You should contact your pediatrician and discuss this as soon as possible.

You really should not give a child more than a few ounces of juice a day, even watered down. It sounds like she is using this as more of a pacifier than to drink. Although, I would mention it to your pediatrician, just to be on the look out for other health issues related to excess thirst.
