I have a 10.5 month old who has NEVER been interested in watching any cartoons, Baby Einstein Videos, etc. Is this okay? He also struggles to listen to a book being read to him...Should I be concerned?

What can I do next?

Hi, M. --

Kids are each so individual! I don't personally think you should worry at your son's young age. One of my girlfriends didn't even let her children watch tv until they were over a year old. In our case, my daughter would have massive freak-outs that could only seem to be calmed by something electronic, like a tv or a cell phone. At the same age, she had absolutely no attention span for books.

At some point by around 15 months, suddenly, everything changed, and she LOVED books. Before she even turned 3, we started reading her books like Anne of Green Gables or Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, and she was totally into it. She'd even talk about the characters and her favorite parts and she'd be excited to read the next installment at bedtime. Now she's 3, and she's already reading.

So, just roll with it. Keep providing exposure to the materials you think will be beneficial for your son, and I'll bet he'll catch on to the enjoyment of them in the next 6-12 months.

:) Good luck!
H.

My 14 month old has never shown interest in watching TV and, frankly, I'm thrilled. I don't want him addicted to the boob tube whatsoever. He barely sits still for reading books either (once he became mobile, he would rather be on the go).

I'm no professional, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. I still read books to my son even if he is up and running around, and I also leave books out all around the living room. One of his favorite things to do is flip through the pages of the books, so right now I'm okay with that.

In my opinion, the less tv he watches the better. One less nasty habit to break later on.

My son didn't watch any tv until he was much older. He was too busy. He did listen to books at a younger age, but his dads other child and my sisters child didn't watch tv or listen to books until they were well over 14 months. I'm sure it's fine. Each child is different. I personally think the less tv the better! :) No worries!

i wish my kids would have that much disinterest in TV!

in my opinion keep him far from it! my kids are so addicted now that it is hard to get them to do other activities. at first i just turned it on when they were little so that i could get house work done... i read recently a study that the baby einsteins videos do absolutly nothing to stimulate the baby's brain and especially since they keep the child from experiencing real life activities that actually do help children build neuropathways...

Sounds like he doesn't hear well enough to be interested.
