Not Growing Pains!

Our 2 year old daughter has been complaining with left leg pain for months, we thought it was just growing pains until it did not go away. Our family Dr referred her for x-rays and to Dr Lorry Showalter here in Boise for a follow up. After and extensive sedated MRI - they have decided that there is some sort of lesion on her left leg, high on her femur, right before it connects to her hip joint. We are scheduled for surgery and an over night stay on the 20th and she will be in some sort of leg cast for 4 weeks.
Has anyone else had any experience with very active kids and casts?! We also have a 11 month old and to make this even more fun, my right arm is in a cast also. So any pointers or advice to make this hard time more bearable for all of us, especially our little patient would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well we are week out from surgery - we have a tour of the hospital with a pediatric nurse tonight, I'm not sure who it is more for us the parents or Cassondra! Thank you all so much for your comments, it has helped me greatly. I will post another what happened after her surgery. Again thank you for all the prayers, I appreciate them all so much!

I have a 3 year old who has broke her arm twice. The first time was last January when she was jumping on the bed and fell off. The last time was in Nov. She fell of the back on the couch. She broke the same arm just in diffrent places. The last time she broke it up by her shoulder in a place that couldn't be casted. So she had a sling, then I had to wrap it to her body. Let me tell you...My daughter is very very active and it was the worst trying to keep her arm in the dang sling. She would take it off every five min.

The first time though she did have a cast and it wasn't that bad. The hardest part was just giving the baths. She seemed to know her restrictions and seemed to deal with the whole thing ok.

Now we have to go to a specialist to see if she has some bone disease, since she breaks very easily.

I know a arm has to be alot easier then a leg. I am so sorry to hear about that! You are going to have your hands full it sounds like. I will pray for you.

The first week or so will prob have alot of pain and with the meds they give her she will prob be out of it. The rest of the time I would suggest renting her fav. movies and having crafts and her fav. toys within her reach. Maybe get her a special little box filled with fun stuff that you can change every day so it is a new suprise.

I do know a bit of what you are going through and I want to wish you luck. If you need someone to talk to shoot me a mail.

My little sister was 2 when she broke her femur and had to be in a full body cast. We managed to make a walker similar to when she was a little baby. She was able to toddle around then. We also would have races on our bellies with just the use of our arms to keep her strength up. The biggest piece of advice I would give is to keep her as active as possible. She will lose a little muscle mass under a cast but keeping the rest of her strong and healthy is possible.

I really don't have any useful advice for you but I can tell you that Dr. Showalter is wonderful. He did my son's operation on his broken arm 2 years ago and I was so impressed by not only his knowledge but his bed side manner (espcially with a worried mom). We just saw him again 2 days ago for my son's broken thumb. I can't recommend him enough! We will keep you in our thoughts and hope that your daughter has a speedy recovery.

The BEST thing I can say is..... get a bunch of boxes of band-aides, stickers, and some fun colored paper. I know when I was raising my 4 little children and I had surgery on both of my feet at the same time. I gave them each band-aides and stickers. his kept them busy for much of the day and when my husband came home fm work they were thrilled to show him the boo-boos and the art they had fixed and made! I was very colorful on my legs, feet, arms face and so was my home. It was not messy and easy to clean up. Cheap and easy on the budget too! Hope this helps Good luck to your family in this time of concern

I am a grandma now and I love children of all ages. V. O.

I am so sorry to hear all that seems to be happening in ur life right now. But I have hopefully some good news. Not at all saying your daughter will respond like my son. My youngest is bipolar, adhd, and odd.(VERY VERY ACTIVE) And he had his appendx out at the age of 3 and with all of his disorders, when it hurt he knew it and it kept him still. I hope that brings some ease to you. As far as the active part. As far as ur arm which I am also so sorry to hear about, we are mother's and some how some way we seem to mange. We must gain super mommy powers somewhere in this whole mommy thing. I have had to knee surgerys and my kids only left my side for the night I spent in the hospital. How I got through it I have no idea, but I did and I thank god for it, cause if the wanted to revolt they could of and won. LOL! Again I am so sorry and you will be in our prayers

I was in a body cast when I was 19 years old. I broke my femur in two and it contracted. I was in the hospital in traction for 3 1/2 weeks and at home in a body cast up to my chest for 2 1/2 months. My mom only let me watch 2 hours of tv each day until primetime shows were on. We read a lot. We played board games and I lived in a hospital bed in the living room where I was with the family alot. Because of the weight of the cast, I was confined to the living room for the entire time. We got through it just fine. Kids can tolerate alot. Best of luck.
