We just moved into a new home and are on well water. Now, I know that a great deal of our flouride comes from tap water, but are my kids not getting it now because we're on well water? My baby's bottles are also made from well water. Anyone know anything about flouride drops, if they are necessary and where to get them? My kids teeth are UBER important to me and I don't want to miss out on necessary nutrients and natural health!

What can I do next?

I would suggest spending the money to have your well water tested before doing drops. Many well waters have flouride naturally. it's a fairly narrow range of flouride concentration that's needed/wanted. Too little and teeth suffer. Too much and teeth become mottled. Way too much and bones and teeth can become brittle. Also, if you're in the mountains, I'd also strongly recommend testing your well water for radionuclides - they're very prevalent in the foothills of Denver. The tests that are done when the house are sold are only for bacteriological contamination - that which will make you sick right away. Radionuclides and other tests are not required by law and are seldom done unless a homeowner is savvy enough to ask for them.

I believe you can get drops over the counter at your local pharmacy, or your dr can prescribe it for you. But yes, your kids will need a supplement of flouride.

We had a well for 7 years and yes, you're rright t be aware of this. Just ask your pediatrician - he or she can give you a Rx for fluoride drops for your baby.
Your older children should get fluoride tablets/ vitamins.

Yes, you do need flouride supplements if there is none in the water. Contact your local pediatric dentist or Pediatrician and ask what the amounts per childs age are.
Bottled water doesn't contain flouride either typically.
Just toothpaste isn't enough.
The drops are easy to find, it is the dosage you should check out.

Flouride drops are prescribed by your pediatrician. Be very CAREFUL with them. We lived in an area that did not put flouride in the water and all pediatricians routinely prescribed flouride drops. My pediatrician accidentally overdosed my daughter (now a teen) and her teeth are permanently stained because of it. She was taking 4 times the daily recommended dose as an infant. He correted the dosage at her 1 year check up when I needed a refill on the prescription, but it was too late the damage was done. So too much flouride is not a good thing.

Talk to your Ped.... I BF all my kids, but we drink bottled water. So I have choosen once my kids are eating and drinking solids to give them flouride. I have talked to our Ped and my Dentist they all recommended low dosage of flouride. They both say a little goes a long ways.

Growing up my sisters got flouride chewables and when I was little we moved and the new Dentist did not recommend it. Well both my sisters have wonderful teeth. Only one cavity between the two of them. I on the other hand have been maxing out my dental insurance yearly. :(

Fluoride in drinking water is a somewhat controversial topic. I grew up on well water and received fluoride treatments when I went to the dentist. With proper dental care that was enough for us. Here is a website that notes some of the risks associated with fluoride toxicity; I think it is good to be informed of the downsides as well.

I grew up in the mountains on well water. My parents talked with our family Dr. and they decided to have my brother and I take prescription chewable flouride pills. I am now 27 and my brother is 22 and both of us are cavity free! I'm not sure if the flouride suppliments are the right choice for your kids but thought I'd share how they worked for our family. I'd talk it over with you family Dr. who may know of something over the counter or other prescription options. :)
Good Luck - enjoy your new home!
