I'm looking for someone or a place to take care of our dog while we're on vacation this summer. We got her from the Dumb Friends League about six months ago. She's super sweet and house-trained but is very scared. I think she had a rough time before we got her. She's terrified of crates and cars. However, she loves people and other dogs and has lots of energy. I want to make sure she feels comfortable when we're gone. Does anyone know of a trust-worthy family who takes care of dogs and provides plenty of exercise without having them sleep in cages?
Thank you for your responses. I'm going to check out the PetsMart Hotel as well as the Waggin' Tails boarding spots. Hopefully one of those will work. Otherwise, I think I'll contact a petsitter and keep her home. Either way, I feel better about our options thanks to all of you!
You could always hire someone to come into your home and take care of your dog if you think she would be too nervous going somewhere. Does she have a dog door? My friend is very trustworthy and has done some pet sitting at other people's homes. I'm not sure what she charges, but she has even stayed the night at some homes. Let me know if you are interested and I can pass her name along to you.

We board our dogs at Waggin' Tails (they have a new name now...but their number is: ###-###-####)
They are amazing!! The sleep in "rooms" that are technically fenced in areas and you can bring a bed for them, or they have blankets the dogs sleep on. In the morning they are out to "free play" with everyone and it's an indoor/outdoor facility with playground stuff outside for them! They come in for afternoon rest-time mid-day and then back out to play until dinner-time.
You can check on them anytime! My boxer was very nervous the first time we left her and they HAND FED her piece by piece until she was comfortable - now both my dogs are very excited when we go on vacation because they know where they get to go!
When you pick up your dog, they will have her washed and groomed and give you a report of who she played with and what she did.
They are truly wonderful and I HIGHLY recommend them.

I'd be willing to give it a try. We have a beagel that was found on the Highline Canal road a few years ago. He loves to play with other dogs, and needs the exercise. Maybe you could bring your dog over and we could see how they get along? A little about me...I am a preschool teacher, and have taught at Busy Bee preschool for 26 years. I have five kids of my own (mostly grown...one 16, and one home from college) and I've had over 25 foreign kids live with me over the past 14 years. This summer I am doing some nannying for a few of the preschool families...I need to make some extra money, my husband is a GM car salesman/manager and it hasn't been good. ~Marlene
We have a very nervous dog. We have had great experiences with Pets Mart's Pets Hotel. They have normal cages but also "suites" that are walled off rooms that are separate from the other dogs. Our dog loves it there and the staff is terrific. We take her about once or twice a year and each time I call to make a reservation they remember who are dog is and what she likes. You can purchase individual or group playtime (with other dogs). We use the Park Meadows hotel and can't say enough good things about it. I think our dog would prefer to live there than with us! We bring our dog's crate to sleep in, which is what she sleeps in at home and I think that also helps her to feel more comfortable.

First of all let me tell you how sweet of you guys to rescue this dog!! I have a rescued dog too, which we couldn't cage either because his anxiety. I lived over in the golden area when I used this woman, but she services various areas. She is reasonably priced. Most importantly... she is one of the most loving and caring people you could ever have watch your dog. Home Free Dog Lodge is out of the way, but a great place! They are up near Golden Gate State Park. Their phone number is ###-###-####. We have taken our Lab mix there for the past 7 years. The dogs have 2 acres to run & play. They sleep together in a heated room or outside. The only time they are "caged" is for feeding. The couple that runs the place lives there so there is always someone around. We think it's totally worth the drive.
