Night Bed Wetting-4 Year Old

My four year old son has been potty trained for over a year....but is still having problems at night. I have tried cutting off his liquids 1 hour before bed and even 2 hours before bed and he is still wetting. I wake him up before I go to bed around 10:00 and have him go to the bathroom. Sometimes he goes weeks with being dry at night but lately he has fallen back into the rut of bed wetting. Any advice that has worked?

What can I do next?

More are more likely than girls to wet the bed.
Sometimes they are afraid of the dark, even if there is a nightlight, and sometimes they just sleep to hard and do not wake up. I would reccomend buying some mattress protectors pads. I used them while potty training my kids. They go between the sheet and mattress. They keep the mattress dry. They are not the same as the fitted mattress pads. I hope this is helpful. Some boys wet the bed until 12 years old (my nephew, and husband).

My ped told me it was normal at the 4 yr appt. Now she's almost 5 is trained at night, although once in a while we still have accidents especially when she is wheezing She has asthma and when the asthma acts up she wets the bed. I read somewhere there is a coorelation.

Hi J.,
as everyone has said this can be very normal, especially for boys. my 7 yo still pee's the bed every night, nothing has worked. he was put on DDAVP and that did not work either, we went to see a child urologist who stated there was nothing wrong and if the DDAVP did not work we would have to wait for it to work itself out. the urologist also stated NO milk or other dairy (a little cheese would be alright) after about 12-1pm as the dairy can stimulate the bladder. my son wears pull ups at night and we just sit back and wait for it to stop on its own. good luck.

I hate to say that it is normal, especially for boys. Aside from your other advice all I can say is my doc said sometimes the body goes through periods of rapid growth and the bladder just can't keep up. There is a reason they make pull-ups in large sizes! You didn't say if he is on any kind of medication, but some meds can cause an over-active bladder or sometimes they can't feel when they have to go. Especially certain meds for allergies. Also, does he have nightmares or is there something going on that he may be anxious/emotional? New school or something? My son was afraid of the dark so much at that age (he's 12 now)he was afraid to get out of bed (the space under it had monsters)and he would wet sometimes. A night light fixed the problem.

Just let him pee. Put plastic sheets on the bed, and a pull up on him. When his body is ready, he will stop. I wet the best until I was 8, on a regular basis, and then occasionally until... probably about 12. I am now pregnant and I have to sleep on a beach towel folded over, because I am wetting the bed every night. I wouldn't push the issue, because yelling and spanking won't help, as he cannot control this, and it's just that, he can't control it, his body will stop when it's ready. Try not to worry, your child is perfectly normal, and very doubtfully will he wet the bed in college (if he does at least he can do his own laundry by then!).

Visit www.bedwettingstore.com. They have "peepee alarms", books, waterproof pads, etc. I used the alarm and Seven Steps to Nighttime Dryness with my oldest son who will be 6 this month...he had been daytime potty trained since 2 1/2 but still wet the bad every night. It took a couple of weeks with him wearing the alarm in bed and now he's been dry since (we did this last summer before he turned 5). Some kids don't make the normal progression to dryness. And waking them, stopping liquids, etc. don't help them stay dry. The alarm helps their brain detect when they have to go before wetting the bed. Email me if you have any other questions. :-)

I really don't have a responds but I am interested in the responds that you get. I have an 8 1/2 year old boy that I am going through this with. He does great for a very long time and then all the sudden he goes for 2 weeks every night having accidents. I know I was a bed wetter and the last time I wet the bed (as embarrassing as it is) was 12. I looked it up and they say that it is hereditary. So maybe that plays a factor. Good luck!!!

Hi J.. I am a Mother of 2 boys as well, a 3 and 4 year old. I had a lot of trouble with my 4 year old with bedwetting. He was fine thoughout the day, but always had accidents at night. Give your child 4oz of cold milk before bed. My pediatrician recommended this and it works. You also might want to wake him up several times thoughout the night for a couple of nights to show him what he has to get up and do. I know its hard especially if your working, but it will help. Good Luck!!!

Our pediatrician told me that it's very common for kids to be night trained and then start bed wetting again around the age of 5. That's why they don't push you to night train and really don't get concerned with it until they're 6 or 7. My daughter wore pullups until she was 5. I had tried to night train her before that and it was nightly she would still go. I tried cutting out the drinks, waking her up, etc. She just slept so hard that it was a nightly thing to deal with. So when she turned 5 I noticed that she hadn't waken up with a wet pullup that often. So I started pushing it more. She still had a few accidents, but that was it. I also noticed that she would go just a little and would wake up and run to the bathroom. Before that, she would sleep through it and in it and never know the difference.
