Hi ladies,

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS this past week, and it was very suprising. My DH and I decided we would start trying 2 mo ago and because of that my OB wants to start me on Metformin or Clomid, my choice. I haven't had a chance to speak in detail with my MD because a different person did sonogram, I will on Monday. I am skinny, no outward appearances of PCOS, eat healthy and exercise. I am leaning towards Clomid because I feel that Met would help more if I had issues with weight, blood sugars, insulin resistance, etc. Has anyone taken Met that has no insulin issues and it helped them get pregnant? My OB said she would lean towards Clomid too but there is that slight increase of chance of multiples and I'm a petite 5'1" and don't think I can carry more than one :)

I have PCOS and tried Clomid for 2 months with no results. It didn't help stimulate ovulation. We ended up doing IVF to get pregnant, but I have heard many say that the Metformin/BCP combination worked successfully. Metformin helped me feel better from other PCOS symptoms, and it seemed to control weight gain.

Hi A.-

I have PCOS and am petite like you (not your typical PCOS patient) I started with Clomid. Never used Metformin. For me, the Clomid did not work and I learned that when you have PCOS your best bet is a Reproductive Endocrinologist. I saw that you are a OB nurse so I assume you may know this already but I really wish I had not wasted as much time with my general OB. I felt that The Repro Endo office was better able to monitor me (I was nervous about multiples as well). They also said that Clomid was a waste of time and quickly switched me to other medications that they felt worked better. Good luck to you!

A.,
I too have PCOS and am not the typical looking PCOS - I've known about my problems since adolescence since my mom has it, my aunt and grandmother (my mom was a nurse). Anyways - when I went to get pregnant the first time my doc was a regular OB and did clomid - first round caused a period since I don't have them without help - anyways all in all I got pregnant (not really from the clomid!).

18mo after first baby I was not too faithful to my birthcontrol pills and got pregnant without "trying" - ended up being an ectopic rupture so that wasn't fun. Then about a 6mo later I saw an endocronologist (spelling?) specializing in PCOS in Carrollton (Dr. DW Dub Howard) - I highly recommend him. He did say that clomid was a waste of time. I wasn't trying to get prego but he put me on metformin to control insulin - even though I wasn't overweight or obese he said you still have an insulin issue that you have from birth and that is what causes the cysts. Metformin from my understanding is not for getting pregnant so that won't help you.

I would look Dr. Howard up - he is aggressive about his approach but is successful - with that said I've also heard once you've gotten pregnant once your body can figure it out - we got pregnant a third time (this one good - only had one side left anyways!) without doing anything (pill wise that is) and have a very healthy second child.

Good luck!

Hi A.,

I went through the exact same thing. I have PCOS (I am thin and healthy as well) and went on Metformin. I got pregnant after 6 months. I was also given the opportunity to go on Clomid but was worried about multiples. One girl in my doctor's office was on Clomid and got pregnant with quads! Good luck!

I was on clomid for the first one and had no problems with it. It took 2 cycles on it. My SIL had more complications with insulin etc and they put her on metfromin and she went through 2 cycles.

weight issues or not, metformin is great for PCOS and fertility. I didn't lose any weight while on the metformin but ovulated regularly. You might ttc on your own for a while, but my cycles off metformin were 46 days and it took FOREVER to ovulate. Have 2 healthy kiddos from metformin---no clomid! Good Luck!

Hi A.,

Here's my story.....

Came off BCP Feb 2006, sono was all clear. Doctor diagnosed me with PCOS A. 2006. Periods started to become unpredictable. Still not pregnant in June 2006, start Metformin at 1500mg. No success yet, and by March 2007 I was having horrible pain from Fibroids. Doc did lap to discover I had endo and fibroids with one ovary covered in cysts. Have the pic and it's not pretty. October 2006 metformin was increased to 2000mg. Lost 10 lbs within 2 months, didn't need anymore, so feeling more fit. Still no baby. Tried clomid 3 cycles summer 2007 and nothing.

A. 2008 I decided to take BCP for 3 months to get my cycle back in order. Still taking Metformin 2000mg daily.
Get off BCP July 2008, August was a wash and became pregnant in September, positive test Oct 15th 2008!!

Hannah was born June, 1st 2009!!

If we decide for one more, I will do the same thing. Take metformin and not wait after getting off the pill, go for it right away.

Good luck to you!

clomid only lengthend my cycles and it was not helpful. I had no outward sign of the PCOS and it was diagnosed too late to help me conceive. Metaformin has stopped the weight gain for me. I became insulin resistant. I make it, but don't process it. I am on 1500mg a day. Hubby and I are going to have to adopt to have children in the home. Find a repr. edno and be agressive. Waiting is not a good thing and I have found out the hard way.
God Bless!
