Hi I have 4 month old baby boy. He has full coverage with medicaid. He has this big red spot on his head that his Pediatrician says might be either a birth mark or a name that is very hard to pronounce but causes for the spot to grow outward and may have to be operated if it be that. His PED. thinks it may be a birth more so than anything else which they call a "Strawberry Birthe mark". Anyhow, their is NO Dermatologist in orlando that excepts Medicaid. What should I do? Wha tam I supposed to do? I am very worried about this !! I cna't believe that their is NO DERM. Doctor anywhere that excepts Medicaid. I really need someones help. Please any advice would greatly greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Well sorry I haven't updated anyone. jejeje. But thank GOD that it hasn't grown outwards or anything like that. So his Pediatrician says that everything will be fine juast as long as it doesn't grow. So I've been watching it very carefully. But let me tell you one thing .... he is a very active 18 month old whos everywhere !! Thank you all the info !! GOD bless !!

Hi, I had the same problem trying to find a derm that accepts medicaid, my daughter has a hemangioma on her leg (that I would prefer to just have removed) and the only doctors office that I could find was in lakeland, and I don't remember the name its been about 2 years now (wow how time flies!!) The derm told me the same thing that the ped told me it was fine and it would be cosmetic work to have it removed not medically needed so ins won't pay anyway. Just as long as the doctor keeps an eye on its size to make sure its not growing rapidly it will prob shrink over time. Hope this info helps!!

My daughter (3 years old) had/has one on the tippy top of her head. Dermatologists will not remove it until the child is 3 or 4 (at least that was what I was told). They usually go away by the time they are 4 years old. My daughter's is much lighter and less puffy than it used to be.
Good luck!

Do they think it may be a hemangioma? If so, I've had two different friends with children with them, both were around the eyes. They don't look great and can get kind of big the first year (my friend's son was about the size of a quarter, while my other friends daughter was more a nickel size). After that first year thought they usually start to shrink.
Anyways, you have time, in both situations Dr. took a wait and see approach since most get smaller and disappear around school age.
Not that I don't think you should see a specialist (the response before me gives you some good resource links), I just wanted to ease your panic. They are not life-threatening and most go away with time...

Hi G.,

Your Pediatrician is most likely talking about an Hemangioma. Hopefully it is not that and is truly only a birthmark. But I understand your concern - this is something that you must clarify so that your son can receive treatment should he need it.

Are you able to travel outside of Orlando? If so, that may be your answer. I don't know of any Dermatologists that accept Medicaid - but I would think the Medicaid would have a list of participating Doctors in Florida.

I did some searching on the web for you and found a few links that may help you:

From the MyFlorida website
"Contact that office for a list of Medicaid providers that serve your area of the state."

and your area office is:
Area 7
Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Brevard Counties
