It is pretty normal for both breastfed and formula fed babies. Their little digestive tracts don't have the muscle tone to effectively push out their bowel movements. It can also be gas.

Constipation is not the absence of bowel movements necessarily, but straining along with producing a hard, pebbly bm.

There are a number of stomach massage and bicycle leg exercises you can do to help move things along and free trapped gas.

Google "baby gas massage" and you'll get a lot of good tips.

Is your newborn breastfed exclusively? If so, I know that that is 100% normal. Every baby does that. It's not a sign of constipation or anything like that. Nothing to worry about.
www.KellyMom.com is an excellent source for breastfeeding information!!!

luci is right on. It is very normal and should lessen with age. The bicycling, massaging & knee bends worked wonders for my little one.

Totally normal. Babies don't have bowel movements until after they are born-- imagine if you just had one for the first time. You would have NO idea what was going on! They get the hang of it pretty quick, but if you are worried, you can "bicycle" his legs gently or do some very gentle baby massage on his belly. Also, if he's formula fed, talk to your doctor about whether he's constipated or not. If he's breast fed, it's no problem. Good luck!

Is you baby formula fed? The iron i it, can sometimes cause that. I started giving my son baby probiotics when he started having the same problem. Worked like a charm!
