New to Rochester Hills Michigan

Hi, I just moved to Rochester Hills from Philadelphia and I don't know anyone or anything about this area. I have two kids ages 3 and 18 months and I was hoping to meet some other Mom's in the area. I could use some advice on fun things to do with the kids and I would love to meet people for playgroups. I know having other Mom's as friends has proven to be invaluable and I am hoping to meet some new people to hang out with and vent about the joys of parenting.

What can I do next?

Welcome to Michigan! I work for a global relocation company and always give this information to my clients. You might want to check out the websites below. The newcomers club and moms & more are great ways to meet new people. Also the library has great mom and child activities. RARA is the Rochester Avon Recreation Authority. They have tons of activities for kids.

Good Luck,
S.

Hi C. -
I also live in Rochester Hills. I moved here a couple of months ago but I have lived in Southeast Michigan my whole life so I am quite familar with the area. I am a stay at home mom of an 18 month old boy and here are some suggestions for you:

1. Rochester Hills Library story times (check out their website for times/sign up)
2. YMCA - tons of programs for kids and families. There is a newer facility at Squirrel/University. Technically, it is Auburn Hills but it is right on the border of Rochester. You can also check out their website too....lots of new to michigan people participating in programs.
3. Gymboree - located at Livernois and Avon.
4. Great Lakes Crossing Mall - has an indoor play area for little ones, a Rain Forest Cafe, also a great place to walk with a stroller since the whole mall is on one floor.
5. MOMs club of Rochester (web link: http://www.geocities.com/momsclubrochester/index.html) I have not yet attended one of their meetings but have heard great things about it.
6. There is also another Moms group that meets out of Crittenton Hospital. I do not know the name of it but if you call, I am sure they can assist.
7. Suburban Lifestyles Newspaper has other local moms groups if this is what you are looking for...this comes weekly for free in your mailbox if you have not yet noticed it.

If you need any more information on anything, please feel free to email me at ____@____.com. I would be more than glad to help or assist you. As I said, I know the area very well...I grew up in Troy and lived in Royal Oak/Birmingham for 10 years before moving to Rochester. I left a very rewarding career with Ford Motor Company when I became a mom and it was a big transition. I can only imagine that moving with 2 little ones is just as much of change as well.
Welcome to MI - Jill

Hi C.,
Congratulations on moving to Michigan. Hopefully the move went smooth and the kids are taking to their new surroundings. Just wait till summer and you'll see why we all love Michigan summers.
I have four kids - 16yrs, 5yrs, 3yrs and 8mths. I go to church in Rochester. Unity Church of Rochester on Harding between Livernois and Main. The people are great. I've always loved Rochester. I live just north of Lakeside Mall in Macomb Township.
Another website you should check out for local mom stuff and places to just be heard is mom2momlist.com once you're on the site go to Boards and you can find so much there.
If you ever want to chat just drop me a line. I've lived in the area my whole life. Really it will stop snowing - maybe in June but it will stop! -

Hey C.,
Welcome to Michigan! I haven't heard of too many people moving TO Michigan lately! Job's are pretty scarce...

Anyway, I wanted to let you know of our MOPS group that meets in Southfield... maybe 20 min from you? Not too sure. It's at 12mile and Lasher road on the south east corner. The church we meet at is Highland Park Baptist Church. Here's their web site any other info you want... http://www.highlandparkbaptist.com/women

We only have a few meetings left, but we do schedule some play groups throughout the summer all over metro Detroit.

We're actually involved in the young(er) married class at the church and enjoy the friendships we have made.

It would be cool to meet you and get to know you!
You're really smart getting involved with something and making some friends - it really is key to surviving in a new area. We've moved 5 times I think and will be married 8 years next month - so I KNOW!

Anyway, feel free to email me if you are interested... We don’t meet until April 19th.... because of spring break and all..

C.

Hi,
I'm A SAHM with a 9 month old and a 27 month old. I moved to Michigan 2 months before I had my first baby. My sanity saver has been going to the YWCA (Normandy & Crooks in Clawson) Thursday mornings. They have a Moms group that meets from 10-12 and childcare in a room down the hall. I keep the baby with me but my older one loves playing with the bigger kids in the childcare. If you want more info you can call ###-###-####.

I live in Rochester Hills, I still don't really know any moms in the area. I am 24 years old and have two beautiful babies. A two year old son and a three month old daughter. If you want to get our kids together sometime, I am always looking for a playmate for my son.

Hi C.,
I know that the Rochester library has lots of great activities for moms and kids. It might be something worth checking out. Also, I live in Lake Orion, about 15 min away from Rochester. I'm a 32 yr old SAHM with a 3 yo boy and an 18 month old girl. Maybe we could meet up sometime for a playdate.
Good luck on getting settled.
Kelly
