New Sheets

Can someone please advise me on what sheets to buy?... Egyptian Cotton, linen, microfiber, poly-blend? Ugh, so many choices (and prices!) but I can't narrow down which is "best".

Suggestions? What do you have and why?

What can I do next?

moma:

you need to go and feel the sheets! sorry - but everyone likes a different feel.

For example - my oldest son LOVES jersey t-shirt sheets. My other son? Likes a thicker style and the bamboo sheets.

I like Eygptian cotton.

What is best for M. - might not be best for you. So I would go to a store like Macy's or Bed Bath and Beyond - and FEEL the sheets. they usually have samples out.

Good luck!

Now I have heard that micro fiber (since it's really polyester) are really hot. They don't breathe and don't have a thread count. They are soft (I have a set for my daughter) and are cheap. Id' say cheap enough that you can try them out.

I personally love a high quality cotton. But they are very expensive. I found that the Target sheets (best quality they have) are actually pretty nice.

!00% cotton.. The higher the thread count the softer the fabric, BUT they will wear out faster..

Always own at least 2 sets of good sheets so they can be switched ourt NEVER use fabric softener with any cotton fabrics. It makes the cotton break down faster and leaves a coating on them.

Make sue if you have a deep mattress that you purchase sheets made for a deep mattress.

I guess you can tell, I was a linen Buyer and sold linens for about 20 years.

some say that the man made fibers are hotter and less absorbent. If your a sweat-er then you need something more absorbent, like cottons. There are different types of cottons but usually they all absorb pretty well. Then you need to look at quality. If you dont mind them getting faded and a little tattered you can go cheaper. Thread count makes them a bit sturdier for washing.

Like Wild Woman says it also can be how you like the feel of them. I like satin and silk sheets but when I jump into bed I slide right out. NOT so fun

Anything but satin. They don't stay on the bed, and if you get the least bit sweaty, they don't wick moisture, so it J. beads up on them and you're lying in a puddle.

I am loving on bamboo! They aren't as expensive as cotton but seem so much more comfortable.

My favorite sheets are the cotton 250 thread count we got from Target. All our sheets come from Target and I get compliments on them from guests too. You do have to go and touch them to see what you like best.

No microfiber, no matter the price! They pill horribly.

While making your choice, be aware that poly-cotton blend fabrics have their fibers "set" with chemicals that contain formaldehyde (not J. sheets, but all poly-blend cotton fabrics). This slowly off-gasses and can be inhaled, and can also be absorbed directly through the skin, which is like a big sponge. There can be long-term health consequences, especially for children who have contact all their lives.

I've become terribly sensitized to many chemicals, including those in fabrics, many detergents, and most fabric softeners. Many years ago, I actually awakened with chemical burns on my skin when staying in a bed and breakfast. The nice proprietor was very pleased to offer us brand-new sheets. Since then, if I travel, I take my own bedding with M..

Cotton, linen and bamboo are all good choices. It's partly a matter of taste. I have become very fond of stretchy knit cotton sheets. Exquisitely comfortable, and they seem to last a very long time.

Cotton ones wrinkle so much that I prefer high thread count percale sheets. I saw wrinkle-free in Bed Bath & Beyond the last time I was buying sheets, but they were ridiculous expensive. After reading on the MP thread yesterday about flame-retardent pj's, one mom mentioned that non-wrinkle sheets have chemicals in them, and now I'm REALLY glad that I didn't pay more for chemicals against my face every night!

Micro fiber are cool to the touch, so if you like a cool bed in summer, they are great.
Percal sheets are less likely to 'pill'. Look for sheets that have at least a 200 thread count per inch. Satins and silks are very, very high in threads per square inch, and therefore are slick. I like cotton with at least a 400 thread count as they don't pill, have a good 'hand' (thats the feel of the drape/lack of stiffness) and have a slight shine to them.
I agree that you have to feel them. Some 100% cotton sheets are very stiff and not comfortable and they never seem to loose that stiff feel no matter how often you wash them. I have a couple really old top sheets that my mom gave M. when I went to college. (20 years ago) I LOVE them more than any other sheets! They do not look old. They still feel great. They are cool to the touch, but I cant find a single sheet at the store that is comperable!
They say that even with the improvement of cottons and other fabrics that cloth is now better than ever. I don't believe it. I will take sheets from the 50's, 60's and 70's over what is available now! Anyone want to get rid of some? :)

What Laurie A said, 100% cotton and as high thread count as you can afford.

A great place to find high quality linens for a deal is Marshall's.

I'm with another responder--I love the Target Fieldcrest 600 thread count (they also have 450 and 800). I have been buying them on Black Friday or when I can find them on sale/clearance! We are currently rotating 2 sets (one from this BF sale, the other from 2 years ago) and they hold up really well to sweaty sleepers and bi-monthly washings. They are kinda expensive, but when I can get them for 25-50% off: Score! I've bought "microfiber" and (fake) "Egyptian cotton 800tc" and don't like either of them. I absolutely will open a package and run my hands between the sheets to feel them before I buy.

I J. bought linen sheets and I can't tell you how much I love them. They were very pricey, but I hear they will last for decades. They are beyond fabulous in how they feel when you tuck into bed!

Egyptian Cotton with a high thread count.
You can easily find ###-###-#### thread count on Overstock.com for cheap.

That's where I buy all my sheets.

As long as it has a high thread count, you should be happy. And flannel ones for when it's cold outside!
