Hello! I will soon be moving my OBGYN health care needs from Long Island Jewish/Northshore to Hackensack. We are relocating to Elmwood Park. I am 5 months pregnant with my first child and would really like to hear some excellent referrals/experiences of OBGYN's in the NJ area that would deliver at Hackensack...I have heard it is the best regional hospital..is that true?

What can I do next?

Hi! I used to be with Dr.s Kopp, Gerardis, Schwartz, and they recently added Dr. Silva. They dellivered my first 2 daughters. The only thing I did not like about this office was the parking in the main hospital garage. Sometimes it took an additional 20mins. to park and get inside. Otherwise, I used this office for 18 yrs. Insurance changes forced me to move to another Dr.

I am currently prego (again) seeing Dr. Robinson, Weinstein, and Parnes. They are located Paramus. ###-###-#### All are women and so far I have no complaints. All OB/Gyn offices in this area are busy so you can expect delays if an emergency occurs.
Hackensack Hospitals new mother baby ward is awesome. The food is fantastic. There is a seperate parking garage for mother/baby so parking is not as much of an issue anymore.

Good luck! Welcome to the Burbs!

Hi I'm your neighbor, I live in Fair Lawn. I used Dr. Michael Sbarra at Hackensack. I liked his firm no nonsense approach and i have worked at Hackensack Medical Center and I know a lot of the anesthesiologists, they said he is great in an emergency. But!!! If you are into natural birth plans etc he may not be for you. He is a big fan of pain control and pro c-section of course if needed. I wanted a vaginal delivery and he induced me a little early due to size of baby etc and I was able to deliver vaginally. My son just turned 1 in July. Congrats on the baby and the move.

Hi! I used Dr Alex Cocoziello. He is located at 1 Broadway on the 3rd floor in Elmwood Park. He shares the practice with his wife Susan. I like Dr Alex better. When I had my first Daughter Dr Susan broke my water and that wasn't pleasant but Dr Alex is always so nice. He is affilated with Hackensack Hospital and they just redid the maternity ward so everyone has their own room and a flat screen tv. It's really nice.
If you need a recommendation on a pediatrician...you can use Pediatric Specialties they are located 1 block from Hackensack Hospital. I use Dr Steven Materetsky. There are 5 doctors in the practice, you can always get an appointment the same day if your child is sick. If you leave a message on the voicemail for a nurse to call back they usually call back within 15 or 20 minutes. Dr Wong is my 2nd favorite and 3rd choice in the practice is Dr Levine.
Welcome to the neighborhood.

Congratulations, S..

I delivered at Hackensack and felt very safe there. Its one of the best hospitals in the country. My GYN in NYC recommended the hospital when I told her I was moving here but she didn;t know any OB's in the area. I ended up using Dr. Irani, whose office is across the street from the hospital. There are 2 other doctors in that practice, Dr. DelRosario and Dr. Chait. All 3 are women and I was very pleased with my care. They also have another office in Rutherford.

Good Luck.

I also have agreat OB/GYN who works out of Valley. His name is Dr. Fred Rezvani and he is in Ridgewood NJ. He delivered my son in April at Valley. Both he and Valley were wonderful. I do not know much about Hackensack though, sorry.

Hi S.!
Congrats on your pregnancy and on your new home!! I have two children, a three year old who I delivered at Valley in Ridgewood, and a one year old who I delivered at Newark Beth Israel (because she needed heart surgery right after birth). I just switched to a new OB/GYN in Hackensack, and I am very happy with him. His name is Dr. Gallo. I got a really good feeling from him. I only waited about 5 minutes when I got there, which I thought was great. I've only seen him the one time, but I am very happy that I made the switch. I have many friends who have delivered at Hackensack, and they have all been very impressed. The maternity wing was recently redone. Good Luck!

Hello, S. and welcome to the neighborhood!!! I am in Saddle Brook, which is right next to Elmwood Park. I swear by Hackensack Hospital. It is the best for pretty much everything. I have family that works there and ALL of my dr's are out of there. Anyway, my OB is actually located right in the hospital in the Medical Plaza building. His hame is Dr. Michael Sbarra. Everyone in the office is super nice and so is he. He was recommended to me by my high risk pregancy dr who is right in the hospital too.. I absolutely LOVE my high risk OB but because he is only high risk, I can not go to him for regular OB appts... so he gave me Dr. Sbarra's name and I have to say I am just as happy with him. Well, good luck with you move and with your OB search!

Congrats! I have Bad News and Good News. The Bad News first this way the Good News will cancel it out.

The Bad News:

If you can stick it out and stay with your current care providers, it would be worth it. I know the distance is a killer, but everyone will be afraid to touch you (malpractice mess) considering you're so far along.

The Good News:

I delivered a high risk pregancy at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson (a few exits off the Garden State Parkway), from Elmwood Park.

The City of Paterson gets a bad rap, however this hospital is a children's hospital and the staff is excellent. For example, one of the nurses thought that she had forgotten to instruct me how to breast feed. On her way home, to (Central Jersey)out of the blue she stopped by my house to check up on us. I just started crying! We tried to give her money, but she refused - Its been 4 years since this happened and I still get choked up.

I hear St. Barnabus Hospital in Livingston is a good hospital to deliver - not my personal experience, I've never stayed there.

About me: Married, 2 girls (10 and 4) First child at 38, second at 40.

Good luck!

Hi S.,

It's such a coincidence because I just asked my mom's group the same exact question! I have also been looking for a new Ob/Gyn who delivered out of Hackensack because it is definitely the best hospital in this area. So many of the mom's gave me the names of the same doctors who work out of Hackensack and deliver at that hospital and they love them! They are Drs. Gerardis, Kopp and Schwarz. Their number is ###-###-####. I am waiting for my records from my old doctor and then I'm making an appointment there myself! Maybe I'll see you!

If you're looking for new friends in this area, my mom's group is great! Give me a call and you can meet us at one of our outings if you want!

I'm so glad some people mentioned Gerardis, Kopp and Schwarz. I had to find an OB/GYN when I got pregnant since my GYN didn't deliver babies. Kopp was actually my first GYN when I was 18 but lost her after a few years when I lost my insurance and she moved her office. I was glad to find her again when I got pregnant. You meet with all three since one of them would be delivering your baby but they are all wonderful and I especially LOVE Gerardis who is simply the sweetest dr on the planet and who also delivered my son.

Hackensack, in my opinion, is the best facility a sa hospital. The staff are so helpful and the baby section is only a couple years old. Everyone gets their own room for delivery and recovery with a flat screen tv. The menu is amazing- truly gourmet! Except for the "breast-feeding nazi" nurse, it was a wonderful experience! It was ranked one of the top 20 hospitals in the country and the only one on that list in the entire tristate area(yes, including NYC).

I also have a strong love for Hackensack hospital and it's staff since that Hospital saved my dad's life many times and I feel without them and their wonderful staff, he would not be here today to see and play with his grandson. I am forever grateful to them! Hope this helps!

I have to agree with Lauren a few threads down ... Dr. Fred Rezvani (his office is in Ridgewood) delivered both of my boys in Valley Hospital (also Ridgewood). He is excellent and i always recommend him to anyone who asks. Also, the nurses at Valley are always pleasant and very helpful with any requests. Good luck!

S.,

Congrats on your pregnancy and becoming a home owner!! I don't know any OB/GYN in the Elmwood Park area, but I can tell you that I love the OB that I have.

Dr Craig Weiner, he is located on Kinderkamack Rd in Oradell. I don't know if he works out of Hackensack or not. I just delivered my son at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ.

Hackensack is a great hospital. Very large and it costs vistors $5 to park!!! Valley is a good hospital as well.

Good Luck!

I would recommend Valley Hospital over Hackensack in a heartbeat. I deliverd my baby at Valley and had a GREAT experience. My cousin and friends had their babies at Hackensack and were not impressed. I love my OB/GYNs from Valley who are Dr. Nickles, Dr. Myers and Dr. Russo who are in Paramus, NJ. I also have many friends who go to Dr. Rizvani and really like him. Hackensack is a good hospital, but VERY BIG and you don't get that "personal touch" that you need, especially when having a baby. Also, note that Hackensack is a teaching hospital, so at any time, you can have many interns in your room, poking and prodding.
