Heylo everyone and happy Saturday! My husband and I are going to be having our first baby in November and I heard it was customary to buy a gift for the new-parents-to-be. I want to buy something for my husband, but I am not sure what. Does anyone have any ideas, what is tradition, contemporary, practical, thoughtful, insights, etc?

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I've never heard of of "mom-to-be" buying a gift for the dad. Unless times have changed, it's always been the other way around. Maybe a non-traditional diaper bag???? I have no clue. Good luck!

I don't know, I may be in the minority here, but I don't believe in this. You already are giving him a gift, his child. You have had to endure cankles, cramps, false labor, stretch marks, feeling fat, etc etc... Then that will be topped off by labor pains for who knows how many hours then pushing like you have never pushed before for who knows how long....Um yeah, he owes YOU a gift...not the other way around.

You are giving him a baby. What more could he ask for?
Traditionally, his friends will take him out for brandy and a cigar.
But if you want to be romantic (and most men don't think of these things) order a special dinner from his favorite restaurant and open a nice bottle of wine. After, he can put a cloth diaper over his shoulder and walk the baby to sleep!
Also, since you are in the travel business....go on a nice cruise!

Hi B. - I don't think this is an unusual request at all! I also wanted to give my husband a special gift for the birth of our first child. I'm not sure where you live...I live in Seffner, FL...but I found an embroidery kiosk at University Mall that sells shirts, hats, visors, etc. and will stitch on a huge book of different designs...I had a polo shirt stitched with the words "NEW DAD" and underneath was the outline of a baby (boy or girl can be done)...I had the same thing stitched on a ball cap. My hubby LOVED them and wore them all the time! There's also a neat store in the Brandon mall called T-shirt Diner (Accross from Macy's) where you can purchase a shirt or bring in your own and you can pick from their designs or custom make your own...they screen print the designs right in the store in abt 5 mins. You can also take in a flash drive if you have a special image you want on the shirt. Good luck!

I gave my hubby a book about being a new dad. I forget the name of it :( But he really liked it. It's a gift that's special to you. Maybe a journal to write his thoughts about the baby. Or a frame to hold a photo of him and the baby down the road. Congrats!!!

I've never heard of a custom of wives giving a gift to her husband when the baby comes-- must be a rich person's invention because most of us are already tapped out with everything we need to buy for the baby-- haha!! I do have a suggestion for you, though... Every time my husband took the baby out anywhere without me, he understandably refused to bring along my girly/clunky diaper bag. Shop around for a manly diaper bag for him!! My husband would grab a couple of diapers and some wipes and throw them in a camping backpack

Hint that your husband should buy you a baby bauble. You are already giving him a gift by carrying and then birthing his baby.

Hi. I would buy him a massage. He will need the relaxation and appreciate de-stressing. Buy yourself one, too!! I do home visits if you want a his and hers package, and train new parents in infant massage. Glad to help!

I got this for my husband and he cried.
A "Willow Tree" figurine of a father holding a
baby. You can find them at Hallmark stores and
it is made of resin, but it looks like hand carved
wood. It is just so simple, but beautiful. There
are no faces on either the child or the father, but
the way that he is holding and "looking" at the
baby still overwhelms us when we see it today, and
we now have 3 kids! UGH good luck

Hi ,,no time to read your many responces but It would be cool if you took a T-shirt to the hospital and had the footprints of your baby put on it when they are doing his/her footprints anyway - He would wear the T-shirt to be used and use the same one for the next child if you plan on having more...I think you are already giving a gift of life .

My husband loves movies so he said a father/child movie.

After reading the other responses I need to add that I totally agree about the daddy diaper bag. I found a cool sling type bag that he had no problem carrying. It was a proper diaper bag including bottle keeper and changing pad but looked like a one shoulder backpack.
He also had a couple of the comedy books and enjoyed them. One was the "daddy's survival handbook" and the other was by Dave Barry "Babies and other dangers of sex." He read those before the birth though.
***
He was not excited by t-shirts and hats at all!

I don't know of a specific tradition, but there are things we got together for each other. We've had photo's done during and after pregnancy, with a second side of the frame that has the new babies footprints. I gave the hubby a little princess towel set to let him know we were having a girl, and I do like the idea of getting him a diaper bag that is more fitting for him.

the willowtree figurine will be perfect! There are also books at Target titled, "why a son needs a dad" and "why a daughter needs a dad"...and vice versa for mom...that would be sweet too!
I did it...he loved it...and giving it to him when baby is here will be perfect!

Honestly it's not really necessary, but you can buy him a funny child raising book......I had bought one for my huband, I don't remember the title exactly but it was something like "My wife is having a baby and I am having a breakdown" and there is another one "How to keep the baby alive while my wife goes to the store" Also you can buy him a cute "daddy t-shirt" which he has to wear to the birth and when they do the baby's footprints tell him to ask the nurse to make the footprints on the shirt he is wearing so you can save it forever for your child to see! Lastly if you bought feminine stuff you can buy him a masculine diaper bag so when he takes the baby out alone he can be more comfortable!

I never heard of that before reading your request, but, I would say, a robe and a rocking chair. It will get cool evenings soon and he will need it when it's his turn to get up. This is really cute. I hope you get him something great. happy shopping!
