New Diaper Size = Itching on Stomach

My 28-month old son has worn nothing but Huggies his entire life and all has been well. However, he's now at 27 lbs, so I moved him up to a size 5 and he developed an itching on the right side of his stomach, where the top of the diaper rubs on his skin. Within a day or so, It started to bother him on the left side too, so I went back to the size 4 diapers (they will work for a while yet) and the itching/redness went away. However, this week I went back to size 5 and we're back to constant irritation and scratching. Today I bought some Luvs in a size 5 to see if they bother him and haven't tried them yet. But in the meantime was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Maybe we'll get to underwear quickly and this won't be a problem for long!

What can I do next?

try folding the top ban down/under so that the edge isn't touching his stomach.

I do not have this problem but I was thinking if they are a little bit too big yet (as you said 4 will still fit for a bit) maybe they are just rubbing him wrong. maybe wait just a bit so they will fit more perfectly and they wont rub?

This makes me feel like my son is a beast lol because he's almost 1 and wears a size 5. He's got the biggest chunkiest thighs I ever thought a baby could have :) We have used nothing but huggies and when we made the switch we noticed some redness, but not itchy (at least my son hasn't indicated it being itchy). We loosened up how tight we normally pull the velcro tabs over and that seemed to help. Have you tried bringing down where you would normally have the diaper up in the front? Did you check with your fingers across the areas on the diaper where it's itchy on your son and feel anything scratchy? It could also be a bad batch of diapers. Unfortunately they do have them... we got a batch that everytime you pulled the tabs over they would tear off >:( Frustrating, but we were able to exchange them. Try the Luvs and see how they work, but I'm hoping too this will be an incentive for your son the try potty training soon :) Have you considered or tried pull ups?

Good Luck!

I dont think you should switch brands because some kids have reactions. my sisters son had that reaction when she switched from huggies to pampers. Try sticking withe size 4 for a while longer the size 5 might just be too big.
