New Boss

I have a new boss (my old one was shown the door about 6 months ago) who is based in another state, and has only last week had time to meet with me individually for my performance review. She did say that she didn't know enough about us yet to judge, so she used comments she got from other people. One comment was strikingly similar to a comment my ex-boss made (which I feel was unjustified; it said something about not being at the level I should be at for this stage in my career!). I was really hoping the new boss would wait to make an honest assessment on her own, and it's bothering me that she now has this negative impression of me without even knowing me. I didn't go into detail with her that several others had left the company under the other boss, and all the complaints about her. Should I have said this? I don't want her to get the impression that I'm complainer, but at the same time this has been eating at me all weekend.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I decided to keep my mouth shut, but it sure was hard (and still is, as I'm tempted to call her and set the record straight!). I just have to hope that my performance will show her the truth!

I agree with the other responders. It only matters what you do going forward. Definitely do not make comments about your former boss. It is unprofessional. My current manager is in another state, and of all 63 of my employees, only 4 of them are in the same state I am, so I understand the dispersed environement. But distance or not, it won't take long for a good manager to figure out who is productive and who is a drain on her time and energy.

What you said you said it doesn't matter if it was wrong or right, i don't know, it depends what type of person she is and what mood she was in at the time. What matters is what you do from now on and that you do the best you can and show everyone how good of a job you can do. The past can't be changed, just do your best in the future and don't sweat the rest.

She probably did get the comment from your previous boss's review. It is probably not a good idea to bring up anything negative about your old boss (I'm sure she already knows everything). She didn't say that she agreed with the comment, she is only telling you what it said. She may be doing it to see what kind of reaction she will get from you..I'm sure other employees made it clear that it wasn't their fault, the old boss just didn't like them. The best thing you can do, is work hard and prove your old boss wrong for next years assessment.

You definitely did the right thing NOT saying anything. Just do your best to make a good impression on her going forward. I feel for you! I was in a similar position several years ago. I started reporting to a new boss in another state, but due to restructuring, not my boss leaving. I didn't care for it...you really miss something not having that daily face to face contact...casual chit chat in the hall etc. Didn't last long for me though...they got rid of my whole department shortly thereafter. I wish you much better luck.

I can totally sempathize with you about letting things like this eat at you all week-end. I too let a lot of negative things eat at me and I can't seem to concentrate on the positive aspects of what I do. Sometimes we are our worst critics! Who cares what your other Boss said about you. Sounds like she wasn't in good terms with herself otherwise she would still be working there, right? You did your job and she didnt do hers, simple as that! Just keep doing an outstanding job and this new Boss will see what the other one didn't and you will be rewarded in the end!
