Never Had a Problem with Diaper rash...until Now

We have a 1 year old who eats like a horse and is still working on the formula to milk transition. It seems like she's had more poopy diapers than ever and the poopies are giving her diaper rash (??). We change her frequently and buttpaste her every time but it seems to be getting worse! We need a new plan but I don't know what to do!

The only thing I can think of is the milk but she gets very little mixed with her formula.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We stopped the transition and went back to formula until the rash cleared up. Then went back using organic milk which seemed to work. Then it happened again this weekend! I can't for the life of me figure out why some poopies give her a blistering rash. This time I went with BAG BALM and it got better overnight. Thanks Mommies :)

Baby aquafore (spelling is not my thing) Works for the worst diaper rash and it is great for chapped lips or skin rashes too.

I never had any luck with Butt Paste on my girls, the rash would last for at least a week, but with Desitin or Balmex the rash would clear within a day. You might want to switch diaper creams and see if a different kind works.

My doc had us stop using wipes (when he has a rash) because there is alcohol in them that is aggrivating the rash. We used paper towels with warm water. Also he had us put 1% cortizone ointment (not cream) on it morning and night, and diaper rash cream with every changing (including over the ointment). We have followed this with the few rashs' my son has had and they clear up in a few days. Good Luck!

Had the same problem with my son at about that age. Here is what I did. The poopy diapers can't be changed, but after cleaning the skin well, either let air dry if you have time, or use a hair dryer on low heat to get the skin dry. Then, apply aloe vera to the skin and let that dry (it makes a seal with the skin for protection). Using cloth diapers during this process also helped. Disposable diapers will not breathe and that is what your daughter's bottom needs is - air. Good Luck.

Two words, K T... PENATEN CREME!

This stuff is the BEST! It doesn't hurt them at all (as every other diaper rash product seems to), and it actually works almost immediately to stop the pain. By day two, usually the diaper rash is completely gone.

It's a Johnson and Johnson's product. You can either order it online (or you can buy it at a German Sausage Kitchen).

http://www.germandeli.com/40446035.html

http://www.amazon.com/Penaten-Baby-Creme-5-1-cream/dp/B00...

I know it sounds silly to think that the best diaper rash creme can be sold at a sausage kitchen, but apparently it's big in Germany and our Pediatrician (Jurgen Upplegger) has never let us down when it comes to soothing what ails our little one.

Hello,

The BEST ointment to use for rashes and anything else like scrapes or cuts is Bag Balm. It comes in a Green Can and you can buy it at most stores. Farmers use it on Cows all of the time and that is when my Mom started using it on us. That was over 30 years ago. The stuff is amazing. I used it on my daughter and now my daughter is using it on my Grandson and it clears up his rash in under a few hours to a day. It works trust me.

Also, we switched my daughter to 2% milk when she was 7 months old. Go ahead and make the change to Milk.

Good Luck!

Hi KT, I was lucky, my kids never had diaper rash except for the day they came home from the hospital! However, my cousins kids had it so bad it BLED! That is until she started using this powder called something like Caldesin (SP??). It's in a pink powder bottle and it's about $5 or so but it works wonders. I can't remember if its in the baby section or normal medicine section. It will clear up the rash, then continue to use it for maintenance. Good luck!

Hi K T,

I've never had too much problem with diaper rash (so far, anyway!), but when it does come up, some diaper-free time (at least a half an hour a day) for a few days helps clear it up quickly. The other thing I've heard of is to never use unrinsed disposable wipes, since the detergents they contain break down the natural protection of the skin and leave it vulnerable to rash, particularly if you have to change diapers frequently. Wash the wipes out under running water for a few seconds before you use them.

I would have to agree with the couple of others who think she is having an issue with the milk. I would recommend contacting your pediatricians office to find out what they would like you to do for your daughter. Good Luck!

I just had my 4th son 2 months ago. My 3 other boys did great with Desitin, but this guy does not!! We tried everything -- buttpaste, A&D ointment...you name it, we tried it. His butt got raw because he became very jaundiced and we were having to force feed him every two hours around the clock until his bilirubin came down. Made for a TON of poopie diapers and a very sore hiney. We asked a pharmacist and believe it or not, he said to use "Aquaphor" healing ointment. I was totally skeptical, but I felt like I had nothing to lose because everything I tried didn't work! Low and behold -- it worked like a charm!! In fact, he has not had one incident since. I use it on him at every diaper change. You can buy it in a big jar or a tube. I have both -- the jar for his changing table, the tube for the diaper bag. Won't leave home without it!! I hope you give it a try, and I hope it works for you! I'm sure it will! Good luck!

If she has a diaper rash that just won't clear up- it might be a yeast infection. My son had one. It looked a lot like a diaper rash, but it was more raised. The dr gave me a perscription and it cleared up very quickly. Good luck.

try maalox or milk of magnesia on her bottom and let her run around without a diaper as much as you can. you may also consider a yeast infection if it is recurring. maybe try cloth diapers for a while. she may be reacting to stuff in the disposable diapers and with cloth diapers you have to change them more often so she wont have a messy diaper on for so long. at a year old she should be pretty much ready for any kind of food. i hope she is still not on formual andmilk and she is eating foods . when she is on solids there is more solid stuff to get out so that may be the larger poops. also you may start thinking about potty training

I think it sounds like milk issues too. My oldest is allergic - he gets hives now. When he was a baby, he just vomited, so he never really got a chance to have it affect his diaper.

That said, I love Resinol. I have to order it online, but it works for everything - butt rash, hives, insect bites, sunburns. My sisters joke it's like "windex for babies" (Big Fat Greek Wedding reference...you may be too young...).

The first thing I would do when my son's had a diaper rash was put them in a tub with baking soda. You don't need a lot of water, just enough for their bottom to get wet. Then I would use Corona as their diaper rash ointment. You can find Corona in a tube/jar at PetSmart. http://www.allivet.com/Corona-Ointment-p/25112.htm. I know some of you are going to think I'm crazy, but it's the best thing ever! When my son would drink grape juice (even mixed with water) he would get a terrible rash. The baking soda and ointment worked wonders!! Now we just stay away from grape juice :)

seems weird...but check the inside of her mouth to see if there are any sores. We had the same issue with our first and it turned out to be a mild case of thrush. the dr. gave as a script for an anti-fungal cream for the diaper rash and I think we had to do an anti-biotic, but can't remember...i just remember the anti-fungal cream. It worked in a day and we've never had a rash since...with either boy.

Hi KT, I had that problem with my daughter after a while. With her, it was the diapers themselves. I was able to use the generics early on, but then discovered probably at about 6 months that the rash would not go away. I switched to Pampers, cleared right up. I had tried Huggies or Luvs on sale, but the rash came back, no matter how quickly I changed her. So I gave away all else but the Pampers and she was fine since then. Had the same problem again when using PullUps, tried several brands, thought she was older so maybe she'd outgrown it, but nope. Back to Pampers! Good luck, I know how bad it feels to know your baby's hurting!

Ok, I had this same thing happen to my kids when we transferred them to milk and it ended up being an intolerance to something in the milk. We have found now that at least a dozen of the kids we know and even a couple on our same block have had this happen. The kids are having a reaction to something they are putting in the milk these days. We have even tried organic milk and it still happens. My kids had a mild case of the runs and bad, bad diaper rash. No matter what we would do, the rash wouldn't go away. As soon as we took them off of the milk they were fine. My daughter is on soy milk and it works great for her. My son can't drink soy milk either (same thing happens). I don't know, but something weird is going on.
Don't get me wrong, it might not be the case with your daughter, but I just figured I better let you know what my experience has been. Oh and the kids can eat milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc with no problems.

When we tried to transition our son to milk, we found out that he was very allergic to it. If he drank any, and even still to this day, he gets a very severe and painful diaper rash. It gets to the point where it will start bleeding. To help with the diaper rash, we use Boudreaus Butt Paste - though it still takes a while to go away but only AFTER we stopped giving him milk. Try taking him off the milk and keep him off until after his rash has healed. Then, try only one bottle and see how that works. My son did not get any milk products - he was only allowed to drink water and juice. We had to avoid cheese, yoghurt, and any products that had milk as an ingredient. As he is growing older, he can tolerate a little more, but he still can't drink straight milk.

get a perscription, it's part aquaphor, part something else...it's kinda gritty. People make a big deal on the formula to milk transition, just take your time and combine the two for 3-4 more months if needed.

Sounds like a milk allergy. Any tiny amount can cause issues. Just like peanut dust can cause death, a tiny bit of milk can cause issues. Was her formula milk based? If so, it probably isn't casein (the milk protein) since she was getting that anyhow. But it could be lactose.
I'd swich to soy or rice or even lactofree milk and see what happens. Since most of her drink right now is still mostly formula, she'll probably not notice a taste difference.
But for some kids with a milk issue, soy also is an issue. So I'd just do rice milk and see if that works. If all goes well with that, you can stick with rice (not very nutritious) or switch to soy. Then, if soy seems fine, give the lactofree milk a shot. If the rice/soy works fine, but the lactofree doesn't, it may be a milk protein allergy that she's developed. If all 3 types work, it is probably just lactose. Good luck.

Does she eat much citrus or grapes? - that always caused diaper rash for ours. Try Melaleuca Renew lotion. Desitin is great, but the Renew lotion did wonders for our sensitive skin baby...I also use it on my acne prone face and it does not dissapoint.

If you feel that the cow's milk is an issue, you can try using rice or soy milk. In addition, you can add a Probiotic supplement to her formula, which greatly helps to eliminate diaper rash by eliminating bacteria and normalizing the body's intestinal pH. I work strongly with individuals suffering from skin disorders of all types and, due to lack of quality Probiotic formulas, I formulated a powdered Probiotic supplement specifically for children; which is manufactured for me by Klaire Labs.
I can also supply you with a sample of our EczemX ointment, which is 100% natural, organic and vegan formulated ... it works wonders on all skin conditions.
Kind and caring regards,
Dr. Tamara

If it's a rash that you can't get seem to get rid of, you might want to take her into the doctor to check for a yeast infection. Or, you could simply do what the doctor will probably TELL you to do and apply some Vagisil cream or Lotrimin (athelete's foot cream) to take care of it.

If it's not a yeast infection, I will also add that Butt Paste (the brand) never worked for us. Balmex is the product we've found to be the best and it doesn't have an obnoxious odor like some others we've tried.

****IMPORTANT NOTE: When you do a diaper change, be sure to allow your daughter's skin to dry THOROUGHLY before applying the cream. Otherwise you're sealing IN the moisture (instead of sealing it out) and that might be compounding the problem.****

And once the rash is gone, continue applying the cream with every diaper change if possible (but especially at night). In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. :-)

Hi KT -

one of mytwins had the same issues, turns out- the diaper rash was that plus a yeast infection. We use Aquaphor - you can find it in the baby aisle. But you may want to try going to your doctor and make sure there is no yeast infection.
