The fireflies are a result of change in blood pressure (I get it all the time). The other symptoms could also be caused by blood pressure. It may be nothing, but you should definately talk to your doc about it.

The flashing in your eyes could be sign of high blood pressure. You need to have your blood pressure checked. If it does it again, lay down on your left side and see if the flashing stops. Laying on your left side will temporarily bring down your blood pressure. Be sure to tell your doctor about this. I had the same thing and had to have my son 6 weeks early (c-section) because we couldn't get my pressure under control.

Hi K., I'm L., a wife and mother of four; two boys and two girls. I don't want to alarm you, but have you spoke to your doctor about pregnancy related diabetes? It's termed gestational diabetes and many women do get it during pregnancy and 90% of the time leaves once the delivery occurs. This may/may not be your problem, but also have the doctor perform an ultrasound to be sure you do not have any swollen blood vessels that could rupture (aneurysms). Before you go to your doctor jot down all signs/symptoms you have experienced to help your OB/GYN pinpoint the problem.

I did have the "spots before my eyes" thing when I was pregnant. My Dr. said it was because my blood pressure was going up. You need to call or go to your Dr. ASAP! You need to get this checked out. The pressure thing down below is probably normal as the baby is beginning to drop down into the birth canal, but you should mention that too. I hope this helps. Be blessed!

Hi K.!

First, congrats on becoming a mom! All the pains, migraines, flashes, etc. are so worth it once you hold that baby for the first time.

I experienced the same thing during my pregnancy and it was due to high blood pressure. It was alarmingly high and because preeclampsia ran in my family, we assumed that was going to be the cause. It ended up being just my nerves...I was terrified of delivery. Definitly talk to your doctor (I probably called mine once a week!) because you want to make sure everything is ok. Also, the pressure you are feeling "down there" I experienced as well. Probably for my entire second and third trimesters. Everything gets shifted in your body to make room for baby and your body starts preparing for delivery early on. (I did get this checked out as well).

I hope everything works out for you! Try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy! By the way, labor wasn't too bad and I ended up having an emergency c-section which also wasn't too bad.

Good luck to you!

Have you gone to see your eye doctor? I worked for an optometrist for 2 years and anytime we had a patient come in with your symptoms, probably 9/10 times they had a detattched retina. It is pretty serious if that is what it is. It wouldn't hurt to see your eye doctor. An optometrist or opthomalotgist would both be able to help you. We never had any of the patients have that problem and be pregnant so if that is what it is, I don't know what it would mean for you. Hope this is helpful! Good luck!

I do not want to scare anyone particularly one who is pregnant for the first time. I am sure you have discussed this with the pediatrician. Also probably others medics. However I want to call attention to various worms that get into the body. They can be within for years with no problems and then the problems begin. If you are unable to find the root of your problem please find a specialist in this field. You may have to go to more than one. Please do not give up until your are confortable with yourself.

God Bless

It may be migraines but I would check with your Dr. to be sure. He/she will be able to tell you what to take, if nothing else. As for the pressure, I'm sure that will all be checked in the office too. Best wishes!

Call your doctor right now. Or go to your hospital's OB wing. It may be nothing or it could be a sign of something very serious that could be threatening your and/or your baby's life. My daughter's teacher almost just died because she didn't pay attention to the strange symptoms of HELLP and her son was taking via emergency c-section at 32 weeks and she almost died before they could get him out. Call your doctor. It could be nothing, it probably is nothing, but if you are concerned, your doctor can help you through it. Call now!!!

I think the problem is hormone related and causing migrane headaches. When my migranes come on, I get blind spots and the sort of spots like you get if you have a flash picture taken and can't see afterwards. This is pretty quickly followed by a terrible headache and sick at my stomach. Food is the last thing I want. Another of my friends had terrible headaches at points during her pregnancy. Call you OB/GYN's nurse and ask what you can take. Excedrin Migrane is really good but check to see if you can take it. It has Acetominophin, Aspirin and Caffeine in it. The aspirin might be my biggest question to ask if you can take.

Go and seeyour doctor as soon as you can. The pressure may very well be the baby trying to crown. 34 weeks is usually (and I am not a doctor or a nurse) about the time your child drops into position.

The headaches and light flashes sound like migranes? Go get yourself checked out. It's better to go and find out there isn't anything to worry about than not going and finding out you should have.

Best of luck

Hi K.,
Looks like you got a lot of responses. I'd also encourage you to always call your doctor if you have concerns. The flashing I had in my eyes and I never had high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, so I think that can be a normal thing. Headaches can be too, though mine usually occurred early pregnancy. But, always good to talk to the doctor to rule out anything serious. I just wanted to encourage you that it could be nothing.

K.,

I also experienced this AFTER the birth of my first child. My opthalmologist said it might have been exacerbated by the pushing I did during natural delivery but that it also could be a genetic issue. He said that one of my retinas was "detaching" so I had laser surgery to correct it and am fine today. At the same time that I was diagnosed, he said I also have a condition called occular migraines. Both conditions have similar symptoms.
For me, it usually starts with a flashing style light in varying patterns. It starts small and them grows so that I have no peripheral vision and limited vision facing forward. Several minutes later, I get a dull headache. The whole thing usually takes around 20 minutes from start to finish so I try to just take it easy and lay down during that time.
If I were you, I'd get checked out by an ophthalmologist (NOT an optometrist). It's very important that you find out which condition you have .It may not be something to worry about but more of an inconvenience. But you still should be examined just in case.

Ask your doctor about migraine headaches. The flashing in your eyes could be a symptom of a migraine headache coming. My sister dealth with those at about your time in her pregnancy. The pressure could be from your bottom area working on making way for birth whenever your body is ready. I am not a doctor nor a nurse but between my sister and I we have both experienced one or more of your symptons. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible but in the meantime try to relax and take it easy.

Well this makes me think of two things. Many times with Migraines any other types of Neuro issues people see aura's or what you are describing as fire flies. This also sounds like the baby maybe sitting on your sciatic nerve and cutting off some circulation which could be causing the headaches and aura's. I almost passed out at the dentist office one time when I was pregnant about 34 wks because the way they had me laying the baby was laying on my sciatic nerve and cutting off blood flow. Hope this helps.

I had the same thing when I was pregnant with my son. The little spots actually got to the point they were blurring my vision (within about 1 hour of starting). I went to my OB and was told it was likely from high blood pressure. The spots were gone by the time I got to OB. They said mine we likely situational as we had just gotten the news a family member had passed away, but to call if it happened again. I didn't have it happen again, but I would at least call your doctor and let him/her know. Good luck!

call your dr. that sounds like a couple of the warning signs for pre-eclampsia. i had started having problems with my blood pressure during my last 2 pregnancies and my dr told me if i start seeing spots with a major headache/migraine (which i get badly while pregnant anyways) to call or go to labor and delivery imediatly. pre-eclampsia is not a good thing but it is partially controlable if caught in time. call now.

Please call your doctor NOW! I, like others here, had pre-eclampsia. This could be a sign. I had problems with 3 pregnancies. They can handle this, but you have to tell them. Please! Also, note whether you are having swelling anywhere-your hands or face especially and tell them that, too! Good luck! Try to stay calm. Best wishes!
