Negative Tests... Is It Too Early to Tell???

my husband and i recently decided to start trying for our second child. i'm SO anxious to be pregnant - i've had the fever for a VERY long time!

the first day of my last period was august 14th, and usually my cycle is about 28 days, except i started on day 31 last time (thought i was prego then), so i don't know if i count 31 days for this time or not... anyway, i have been taking tests every day this week, and they're all negative. day 31 will be monday... and with my first pregnancy, my tests were negative until i was 5 days late. is that common?

i'm just really hoping i'm pregnant. i don't want to wait ANY longer, and i'm getting discouraged everytime i see that negative result. obviously there's still hope until i start my period, but has anyone else had issues with not seeing positive results until later?

we got pregnant with emma unexpectedly (on birth control), so i've never dealt with the waiting... i'm just starting to panic that we'll have trouble conceiving... i know, silly worries, but i can't help it. my heart just desires this SO badly!

(i have been off birth control for about 1 year - we have been using "other" preventative methods, so i know it's not that...)

thanks for your encouragement and advice!

What can I do next?

I didn't find out I was prego with baby #2 until day 37. We had tried for 14 months before that. My cycles are 29-32 days long, so you may just be off. Don't get discouraged if you aren't this cycle. It can take some time. godd luck!

another good resource is - that's a great website to help track your cycle. It sounds like you're still a little early, so relax for a few days and then test again.

We also weren't planning our first pregnancy, so the 2nd time around when we were trying, I felt the same way. I basically had to tell myself to relax, and just let it happen. I'd been told and also read that sometimes subsequent pregnancies took longer than the first to conceive. It took about 3 1/2 months after having my iud removed before I got pregnant. I took so many pregnancy tests in that time, and was also disappointed when they were negative. I was getting concerned, since my DH is a cancer survivor and was told the likelihood of him having kids was slim to none. I thought, what if our son was our one chance to have our own kid? I know 3 months isn't very long to be trying, but that thought was there. I decided to stop taking a pregnancy test before my missed period, b/c I hated how I felt when it was negative. When I stopped feeling so anxious about it is when I got pregnant. The day before my missed period in March I had a sudden sensation in my breasts, like milk letting down, and I thought I must be pregnant. I pretty much convinced myself I wasn't, just so I wouldn't be disappointed, but took a test anyway. It was positive! Now I'm due in 8 1/2 weeks!!

So what I'm trying to say is be patient. I completely understand how hard it is, but the more stressed you are about it, the harder it will be on you if the test is negative. Try to relax, and enjoy the process of trying. I wouldn't get worried just yet (dr's say you should wait a year before getting concerned). It takes time, and you've just started. Wait til you've actually missed your period to take a test, since they are more accurate then. The most important thing is to try your best to relax and not stress about it.

Please go get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Dr. Toni Weschler. It will help you better understand when you can conceive and if you are having issues with your cycle. If you are at any time confused with this method, give me a shout.

As I have said before, if you are trying to get pregnant you need to get off all caffeine, start taking care of your body as if you are pregnant, and take a prenatal and an Omega 3 daily.

Best of luck to you.
