Hi, I have a beautiful and loving 7 month old son who, lately hasnt been sleeping very well. A couple of weeks ago he began waking up in the middle of the night, again. It started once or twice a night, then he started waking every 1hr - 1 1/2hr and now he wont sleep at all unless I carry him while hes sleeping. I get lucky sometimes by being able to lay him down in the bed with me but within the hour hes waking up crying but as soon as I pick him up he falls back to sleep. Is this normal? Has anyone experienced this? I know the first few weeks after coming home from the hospital, he wouldnt really sleep, but I thought he was just colicky at the time. But now that hes older Im not too sure whats going on. Its getting harder and harder since I work full-time and Im getting less than 4hrs of sleep a night. My DH tries to help me at night but my son will only sleep with me. Luckily yesterday afternoon my DH let me sleep a few hours during the day but Im back to being tired again because my son didnt really sleep last night. Even those few hours that my son sleeps, hes tossing and turning. He just seems a bit restless. If any one has any advice I would really appreciate it.

What can I do next?

Is he getting more teeth???? He may be waking up due to teething.. or maybe you could try playing a baby music cd? or he may have an ear infection.... might want to talk to his pediatrician...

Have him checked for an ear infection! I know it sounds strange but we would always know our son had one when he stopped sleeping at night - even if he had no other symptoms! May be worth a try!

Hope it gets better!!!

I recently experienced the same thing with my 9 month old son, Jonathon. J would wake up and go back to sleep after being nursed - but nursing every 60-90 minutes all night long was killing my energy levels!

Then my sister asked me if he sleeps with 'white noise' in his room. She said that her kids all sleep better if the room isn't too quiet. I was doubtful, but ready to try anything. I went to target and purchsed a $10 fan and turned it on. He's been sleeping fine ever since, only waking up every 3-4 hours to nurse which is what both of my other breast fead babies have done at that age.

Some other factors to consider: is he teething? is he hungry because he's about to go through a growth spurt.

Hope this helps and you're sleeping again soon!

My first thought is teething. Since her prefers to be upright, it could also be his ears.

I do NOT recommend Babywise. It's very unnatural.

Hi S.,
Is it possible he's teething? When my daughter was a baby, she would wake up much more often when she was getting a tooth in since she was in so much discomfort. Or could it be something else making him uncomfortable, like an ear infection?

Just a couple of suggestions for things to look for. I hope you figure out what's bothering your little man! Good luck!

He might be teething. That is what my son did when he was teething also. That is the only way I knew what was wrong, cuz he didn't drool, cry or anything else. He would just wake up a little at night and then just need a little comforting.

I would make an appointment to talk with your dr. A few possibilities could be:
acid reflux (it's painful to be lying down, carrying is most comforting and meds will help)
ear infection (puss pockets will wake them after a few hours in great pain, again, upright will make them feel better along with meds)
teething (he could just have sore gums from cutting teeth - teething tablets and/or tylenol(or motrin) will help

your dr. will best be able to determine what's up and prescribe the most appropriate treatment.

good luck!

Here are some possible ideas....he may be needing more on his tummy at night in order to allow him to sleep through the night or at least longer into the night, it could be he is either too hot or too cold...too bundled, not bundled enough. Try switching things like this to see if maybe one or more of these environmental things is the issue. Also, if you WILL carry him to let him sleep, he will certainly continue to ALLOW(demand) you carry him...it stinks, but it's true...they train us quickly! My 2 year old started this "waking up thing" this summer and I am a single, working mom, so I understand how tiring it can be. I have had to decide that I am the one in control and sometimes he would just have to lie in bed and cry or just lay there until he could/would go back to sleep. Once I decided I was going to win this battle and that I was the Mommy, (advice other mothers gave me) I had a sense of courage and strength I really needed and we have made it through the summer and now, WE BOTH SLEEP AT NIGHT!!!
Well, I hope some of this helps. Take it for what it's worth.
Good luck and "Good night":)

Hello there my name is A. and I have 3 kiddos. I just wanted to ask you if you have tryed to give your babe a soothing warm bath with some soothing babe bath soap?
This use to help my oldest son sleep at night when he was a babe he would get upset belly during the night. A warm bath would usually do the trick.

Good luck, and have a wonderfull day :)

Sounds to me like he might be teething. Feel in the back of his mouth to see if he has a molar coming through. Sometimes you can't feel them but you might notice if is gums are swollen. I would try giving him some infants motrin drops before he goes to bed. If the motrin helps then you will know its definately something bothering him. You can also try Gripe water, which is all natural. It soothes teething, colic, and gassy babies. You can buy Gripe water at your local health food store but you might also ask your pedi for a sample so you can try before you buy. I used the gripe water and thought it was okay but I know other moms who swear by it. Every kid is different. I have also used the Hylands Homeopathic Teething Tablets which work alomost immediately. They disolve as soon as you place them under tongue.

Buy the book entitled "Babywise" My son had severe acid reflux until he was around 8 months and I thought I would forever sleep in the rocking chair! This book saved my life!!! I could not begin to follow the routine the book recommends until his reflux and his pain were under control but around 8 months he finally adjusted and I began using the program. The catch is you have to be strong and follow the advice because it works. It teaches you how to teach your infant how to self soothe and put themselves to sleep in their own bed. You must be willing to let your baby cry it out without going in and picking him up. It was a little heartbreaking but believe it or not my son cried for 20 minutes the first time i put him down, then 10 min, then 5 and within two weeks or less i could read to him, sing to him and snuggle him and then while he was still awake put him in his bed and he would talk himself to sleep. It also deals with what to do when they wake up in the night and in the middle of a nap you know they have not finished. I highly recommend it and I hope it works for you. My son is 3 and bedtime is still a breeze!

Both of my daughters did that, after a few weeks of giving into the crying and picking them up I realized that they had trained me to get them when they were crying. I started letting them cry it out like I did when they were infants and learning to sleep throught the night. Within a week we were all back to sleeping through the night.

I know how you feel. I have a 1yr old who still wakes up every 2 hrs to nurse. My supply has cut way down, so its even harder now. I've even taken her to the dr. & they gave her a clean bill of health. What I'm able to do now is only nurse her once at night & the rest of the time I have to get up & make a bottle. People have suggested that I just let her cry it out & that she would eventually go back to sleep. She tosses & turns all night long. It's like she's never really asleep. She doesn't get a restful sleep. Advice I was given was:to get a white noise machine, let her cry it out, keep her up later at night, & try & get her to take more formula before bed. I'm in the same boat you are :(
