Need Your Review of Value City Furniture &/Or Nissan Murano/Rogue

Hi Mamas! I find myself in need of a new couch and a new vehicle. With the twins coming, I don't have a lot of money to spend on a new couch, but we are in desperate need of one before they arrive. I found the exact couch I want at Value City Furniture for about $400 less than other places. My question is has anyone ever bought furniture from them? Is it worth it? Will it hold up for a few years, or will I find myself in need of a new couch next year?

The other review I am seeking is on the Rogue or Murano. I currently drive a Ridgeline and while I love it, it will be too small for carrying the twins and all the fun stuff that comes with them. I have only ever owned Hondas, but if I'm going to spend the money on their Pilot, I might as well get something with all the bells and whistles I want. Do you drive one? Is it roomy (enough for twins and all their stuff)? Has it held up well?

Thanks for the reviews!

Thumbs up on VCF...have bought many items over the years. They carry many name brands, service and delivery is good. Definitely a great selection and pricing is good. We just bought a living room group last summer and love it.

I bought a VCF sofa set & we just replaced it last year. We had it for 8 years. It really needed to be replaced before that, but I also have twins & a single too (after them).

It did its job, & is continuing on as the 'jumping couch' in another room. the chair is being used in the playroom to watch tv & the loveseat has moved to my bedroom to watch tv. Definitely got its money worth!

I have no clue on the car. I drive a Toyota Sequoia & LOVE it.

G.,

We have a Nissan Murano for about 18 months now and I really like it. However, we have a 6 year old boy and 4 year old girl and the car fits our family of 4 nicely. However, rule out any future car pools because you can only fit one more child in the car and if there is a car seat involved it gets alittle squished, especially when you try to buckle them all in.

Hope this helps and as far as Value City furniture, my parents have bought from them, have been happy so far, although it was a kitchen set not a couch. It should last over a year, after all with small children we never want to invest alot in furniture until after they get older. Crayons, markers, leaky diapers all that....

Take Care,

We bought a couch from VCF and it didn't last long. We bought a chair with an ottermen and we had to throw the chair out because the arm broke off. At that time we didn't have any kids yet. So it wasn't like they were jumping on and off of it. We contacted VCF because of it and we had a warrenty. They wouldn't cover it! Then the couch had holes in the back of it and they wouldn't cover that either. I would spend a little more money and go somewhere else. Try Darvin furniture in Orland Park or even World Furniture out in Plano. Both are cheaper then like say Lazy Boy.

We don't have any Value City stores in my area, so no comment on that. Why are you excluding American based cars? I have never driven anything but a Ford and I love them. I never thought I would like driving a truck but I have a Ford F150 Super Crew (4 doors) and I love it. There are many times this year I really think I wouldn't have made it to work without my 4 wheel drive. I drive 30 miles through a mostly rural area. My friend and I were in an accident in March (she was driving) in a Hyndaui crossover SUV there was major damage and the airbags didn't even go off. We were only going 30 mph and I feel so lucky neither of us were seriously injured. The EMT's kept commenting on how severe the damage to the vehicles were for us to not have more severe injuries. I have a Mustang also and really like it but I would never put my kids in it. I am too worried about what would happen if we were in an accident. If you want a crossover, test drive a Ford Edge. Check out safety crash test. I don't want to offend envirommentalist but, to me I would rather sacrifice MPG's than my safety!

I have a Nissan Murano and I LOVE it. I have had for almost 3 years. I have a 1 year old and am expecting my second. It is pretty roomy and it was one year the "safest car". I would recommend it. Good luck with everything!! I would say spend a bit more and get the all wheel drive. I wish I would have done that. But it is still pretty good in the snow too. Hope it helps!

I have an almost-5 year old and 4 month old twins and have been researching good cars for our changing needs. But as a testimonial to the notion that having twins doesn't mean you need a huge vehicle - We have kept our honda CRV for the moment and it is working just fine with 3 in the back. I also like that Honda generally has good EPA ratings (you can check the EPA vehicle guide http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/Index.do;jsessionid=8230...)

I just wanted to mention something to keep in mind for your search - some of the crossovers can be deceptive in terms of the functionality of the 3rd row. Often the 3rd row seats are not approved for car seats, and are also not very comfortable for adult passengers.

good luck in your car hunt!

We just bought the Murano and while we love it, things are tight with rear facing car seats. We have found this no matter what we are driving in (but I refuse to try a mini-van). I would buy the most compact seats you can when they outgrow the carriers. Talk to your local police department about installation, too, before you buy. The rear facing carrier must have the handle all the way down (not in the up carrying position) and then a hands width between it and the front seat. Good luck.

Hi G.-
Congrats on the twins!

I'm a Honda lover. I had a Civic and before my first was born, we got a CRV. They have great trade in value and don't need repairs...i just do the recommended oil changes and mileage checkups.

My husband's Ford will be ready for the graveyard in a year or so and we have already started investigating what to get. We are back and forth between the Pilot and Odyssey, but will probably go with the Odyssey because we plan to keep it until it dies, which means we will have lots of room and seating for long trips, kids' friends, and helping move furniture for family and friends. I also like that the Odyssey gets better mileage than the Pilot. They bells and whistles are about the same for both automobiles. The thing that makes me want to go with the pilot is the fact that it's not a minivan....but I think I will swallow that and be a "mini van mom" a little sooner than planned. :)

Good luck!

My husband and I recently bought a Rogue before our little one was born. We had a Toyota Solara and a Honda Civic and they were both 2 doors, so we traded in for a Rogue. We love our Rogue. It gets great gas mileage, drives nicely and has some great features. However, I don't think it is big enough for twins. There is not a whole lot of room in the back seat, and we had to install the carseat on the passenger side of the vehicle, it would not fit behind the drivers side with my husband driving. He is 6'3 and fits in the vehicle just fine, but he has to have the seat scooted all the way back because he has such long legs. I am only 5'3 and the passenger seat has to be scooted almost all the way to the front so the carseat can fit behind it. It's fine for me, but with twins, both seats would have to be all the way up. My advice is take your carseat when you go car shopping. We were shocked to see how much room the carseat took up. The Murano is more expensive, but it does have more room. Good luck!

Hi G.!

We bought a sectional from VCF back in 2006. It's held up really well. It's in our basement. My 5yr. old is bouncing around on it all the time, and it still looks great. I was originally torn, but I'm happy we went ahead and got it. 2 years and counting . . . so far - so good!

Can't help you out with the Rogue or Murano. I drive a Chevy Tahoe. Although I once considered getting the Murano - I think they are so cute!

Good Luck!

Hi G.: I am the mom to 9-year-old boy/girl twins and we have a Nissan Murano! I love that vehicle! It drives like a car, but you are up higher like a full-size SUV. Plus, the storage space is awesome. You'll be able to get the twins stuff in there no problem. I had a Ford Explorer previous to that, but the Murano is so much nicer. I hate to go against the American vehicles, but I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Good luck with the babies! Mine were born at 36 weeks and weighed in at 6.3 and 6.4! All the best!

Hi G.:

Congratulations on your twins - exciting!

We bought a sofa and overstuffed chair with ottoman at Value City about 8 years ago. We used it in our home for several years and now our niece has it. It still looks brand new. It is the one and only purchase we ever made there, but I was very impressed with the look and the durability.

You didn't ask, but I have to tell you that I LOVE my Honda Pilot. I selected it for it's crash test ratings and after 3+ years I love everything about it. Knowing that my family is traveling safe is now just the "cherry on top!" My husband drives the Ridgeline, which we are also happy with - but not as versatile as the Pilot.

Cheers!

Hi G.!
Congrats on your twins and the new little one on the way! Sorry to hear about your m/c - I have a beautiful 10 month old, but recently had m/c as well, and we are in the process of trying again. I know how hard it can be! Anyway, about Value City Furniture... just be careful what you buy there. We have a couch/love seat set from them, and while we like the style, it is constantly "spitting out" (for lack of a better term!) feathers every where. I'm not sure why, but all of the pillows always have feathers sticking out of them! It's actually kind of annoying (it increases my vacuuming) and it ruins the look of the couch. I also have a bedroom set from them and I absolutely love it!! It's beautiful and is holding up well. So... I'd be very careful with the couch, but their wood furniture seems to be great!
Take care and good luck!

I know a few familys that bought from Value City. They don't carry good quality furnishings. Go to Ashley. They guarantee for years and repair or replace if something happens to it. Raising kids you have to think of that factor. Kids running and throwing themselves at the sofa etc.

Over the years, I have bought living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture. The prices wre always good and the quality was perfect for me especially with having 5 children. We still have a recliner grouping that we bought about 12 years ago. The mechanism went out, VCF sent a guy out to fix it and it has been great.
I was sad to see them close their store in Rockford, but I did get some good buys before they closed.

Congratulations on the twins! How exciting... My husband and I were in need of a new couch, given the advice from friends & family we decided to go to VCF. We love the pleather (sp) sectional couch, and reasonable $$.. the unfortunate is that my now two 1/2 year old got a hold of a pen and marked it up. Called VCF in regards to our "protection plan" and still have yet heard from anyone. That was about 2 years ago. So in my opinion I would not buy the protection plan because you will never get anything done except the run around!

Hi G. - Congrats on everything! First and foremost, if you haven't already, please find yourself a twins' club in your area for support! You'll definitely be happy you did! You can find one in your area on the IL website: www.iomotc.org, on the Local Clubs link. (I have 2 yr old boy/girl twins)

Secondly, if you are even thinking about possibly having more kids after the twins, you might think about going ahead and getting the Honda Odyssey minivan now, and saving yourself the trouble of not all fitting and having to upgrade again in a few years. With our third on the way in 6 weeks, we bought the minivan back in Oct. We got a great deal in this economy. I was one who never thought I'd drive a minivan, but it really is the best with multiple children! The sliding doors alone are worth it! Just something to consider.

And thirdly, I have bought a couple of times from VCF. The first leather sofa set has held up pretty well, considering cats, dog & kids that have lived here. The entertainment center is still quite sturdy and awesome - I love it! We just bought a leather sectional for the basement last year, and I have gotten so many complements on it! People can't believe how inexpensive & nice it is! (One piece did have a small scratch on it when they delivered it, but they came out right away & fixed it, and you can't even tell where it was.)

So, good luck with everything!

We purchased a couch from VCF about 8 years ago in the reduced section for about 150.00. We just "replaced" it, but i moved to our basement apartment for extra setting there. It's awesome for cleanup milk, juice whatever plus it has great fire proctection w/ a slow burning point(not that's going to happen) but thats why we chose it. Hope this helps : )

Hi -

I was pleasantly surprised by my Value City couch. My hubby and I bought it as a starter couch...I think we paid $400.00 for it! We used it for four years and it was in such good condition that my parents took it. They've had it for three years. It's used daily and is still comfortable, good support and looks only slightly used!

Really a great bargain.

In regards to VCF, we have a couch from them that we absolutly HATE. When you sit down in it you can feel and hear the cardboard backing pop. It holds all stains and we've had it for 4 years and it looks trashy. On the other hand I have a wooden coffee table and end table that have held up good for the last 9 years. So I would buy wooden stuff there but will never buy furniture from there. You get what you pay for.

Hi G.. We have the Rogue and we like it, but it is not all that big. We only have one child so far, and I am nervous about fitting two in there someday! My sister has three kids and has the Honda Odyssey. It is very roomy and fits all of them very well. The sliding doors are a nice feature. With the Rogue, it is hard to open the doors out far enough in our garage in order to fit the carseat in.
