North Texas Kids magazine is doing a "city spotlight" on Southlake in its October issue and has asked me to gather some "mommy favorites"! So - tell me what you like best about Southlake and/or some unique hot spots (example: Central Market Cafe on Tuesdays - Kids eat free after 4 pm with play area & free wi-fi)! We'd love to quote you, if you allow, and I also welcome pictures (especially from last year's Oktoberfest). What's your favorite restaurant, park, activity, tradition, etc? Thanks for any input!

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you who responded with your favorite family spots in Southlake! I think we used ALL of the quotes with your first names - so check out the spread in the October issue of North Texas Kids magazine, hitting the streets @ Oct 1st. You'll find them anywhere moms are sitting and waiting (Adventure Kids, Pediatrician offices, dentists, dance & martial arts places, etc).

Hi M.,
We just moved to Southlake this summer and I am happy to help you however I can. Our experience has been truly amazing since we moved in. The people here are so wondeful. Our neighbors all brought over goodies and offers to help us settle in. People from the community donated coupons, gift cards and other goodies to create a welcome basket that was hand delivered by a Southlake neighborhood welcome wagon volunteer. The schools do special registration days for new students that include student led tours, Dragon green popcorn and time to get aquainted. I have to say that the community feel here is like nothing we have ever experienced. People are walking, riding and playing outside all the time. People really try to make you feel welcome and include you into their busy lives however they can. We went to the 1st Dragon football game and had a ball. It was awesome to see spirit in the town. Green shirts and hair, Dragon tatoos, and best of all- true love of the hometown team. It seems to really bring people together of all ages. My boys are small but they caught the Dragon fever just because they could see and feel the excitement. Friday nights are a blast because they get to see their friends and so do we. :) My son is at Old Union and we are so impressed with his experience there so far. The new principal is fantastic. My son met her this summer at registration and when we walked in on the first day of school, she called him by name. That is impressive to me! I really feel like the teachers and staff are invested in my child and want the best for him. We also really love our neighborhood, Cambridge Place. The location is the best in Southlake for sure. We are close to everything but still have easy and quick access to 114. Our neighborhood is very diverse but everyone enjoys being social and getting together. We have been here 3 months and have been invited to several neighborhood parties already. Happy hours, cul-de-sac get togethers and Ladies night outs are common around here. We know more of our neighbors in 3 months than we did the 3 years in our last home! Please let me know if there is anything else you need.

Hi M.,

We followed our Dr. to Southlake and is the reason we go...
Dr. Roger Knapp is the greatest. He was in Irving and several years ago moved to Southlake we followed. Guess that is not a tradition but to follow a doc means he is pretty speical.

Honestly other than that we don't venture over there, but always had a tradition of doc vist and then a stop at Chik Fila on Southlake Blvd. We were blessed as most often we were there for normal illness...sinus infections or strep.

Hi M.,

We like Central Market, Barnes and Noble, Cafe Express, and Corner Bakery.

Also like the activities that the Town Square offers thru the year for families.

We love going to Brio and sitting on the patio. Wednesday's they have $2 off martinis. The kids can play in the courtyard if we sit on the patio. We have dinner and then head over to the gelato store and then to Barnes and Noble. Of course CM is a favorite too. Adventure kids is great for drop off childcare too and our kids love it

As you stated, I love the CM cafe on Tuesdays. I also love going to CM on the weekends when they are giving out free samples -- it gets my kids to try something new without feeling like they have to eat a lot. That's how my 7-year old son discovered pesto.

I also like going to the Apple Computer store. They have 4 computers set up at kid height with little ball seats and my kids (7 and 4) can play games while I shop and actually think about product purchases.

Finally, both of my kids have done swim lessons at the CISD aquatic center. The instructors are fabulous -- firm, but kind. The kids love the instructors AND learn how to swim. My 7 year old son also takes diving lessons from GC Divers at the aquatic center and I would highly recommend them. Plus, their lessons are at the same time, so I get a little break up in the observation deck! I live in Bedford and drive up to the aquatic center twice a week because I love the instruction so much.

Use any quotes you like.

Our moms group loves Harkins theatre (they have a child play area available to drop your child off during the movie) and Sunshine Glaze pottery. Bicentennial park is great (but no baby swings?) too. I don't have pictures, but I can get some quotes if you like - feel free to PM me.
