Need to Wean!

I am just wondering if anyone can help me. I need shoulder surgery (rotator cuff). I've tried holding off but the pain is getting real bad. Hence, I need to wean my baby girl, she's 8 months. I've tried introducing Similac and she gags bad! Is there any formula out there that nursing babies prefer. I know this maybe a far fetched question, but doesn't hurt to ask! LOL There is not a way to continue breastfeed so DON'T go there. My arm won't beable to move for two months or longer!! Not to mention the meds I'll be on! Also, there's not enough time to pump two months or more of breast milk! LOL I appreciate any help! Thanks a ton. I am really stressing out about this! I really don't want to wean her, but it's a must.

What can I do next?

H. try the enfamil ready made. If that does not work try all the ready made formulas. They are a bit sweeter tasting and smoother than the powder version and will help her get use to the taste. hope this helps.

I am sorry that you are in pain and in need of surgery.. neither is fun.

I have to go there long enough to say that it is highly unlikely that you will be on any medications that will be a problem... unless you are going on chemotheraputic agents.

I also want to suggest that you think about caring for you daughter when he is not nursing and what that entails.

So, given that you have chosen to wean ... I would skip the formula completely and use foods and water ....

Enfamil AR, is has a clean fresh smell, my baby made the transition seamlessly.. And it is just a tad bit thicker than other baby formulas, which helps them keep it down.
So, if she gags from it initially, hopefully it will stay down.

Good luck with the surgery, that doesn't sound like fun. But I wish you a very speedy recovery!!!

I was having trouble finding formula my son would like at around 8 or 9 months old when I was stopping nursing. Somebody told me to try Nestle Good Start. He took that just fine so we used that for the last few months before milk. Hope it helps and hopefully you can relax soon!

I agree that she's at the point where you could probably increase some of the solids she is having. Then you can at least have her sitting up in the high chair and can still feed her with the good arm. As for formula, I always had good luck with the Parent's Choice/Wal-Mart brand, myself. It seems to have less air bubbles in it after it is mixed, and we had gassiness issues otherwise. I used it when I had to stop breastfeeding with my son and he took it fine and I've supplemented with it with my daughter as well, until she was a year and could start having whole milk instead.

Good luck!

H., I weaned my little guy when he was around the same age. I used Enfamil. At first, he didn't like it, but i offered it a few times and he got to like it. Then he got to like it more than the rest of the breastmilk i had frozen! Hope that helps!

I have had very good luck with Nestle Good Start Supreme. You can sign up on their website www.verybestbaby.com for coupons, and Target often has 25% more canisters for the same price as most other formulas - about $23. Have you tried mixing breastmilk with formula? That makes the transition a little easier. If possible, maybe you could pump and freeze enough milk to mix the two as long as you can after your surgery, both to continue the benifits of your milk and to help her in the transition to formula. Good luck with your surgery and your plans for your baby.

H.,

I weaned my son at about 7 months due to a low supply and the fact that we were going on vacation when he was 10 months (without him). ANYWAY, I would pump and mix the breastmilk with the formula. Start with like 90% BM and 10& formula and increase it from there. Are you bottle feeding her now? If not, I'd transition to bottles with 100% breastmilk for a couple of days first.

I know there are some storage issues with BM vs formula, so just make sure to adhere to those (I forget what they are exactly). www.laleche.org has some good information.

I hope your surgery goes well!

I am sorry to hear you are in so much pain. My goodness. It sounds best for you to wean. We just stopped on the 29th. It's been sad for me. Anyhoo... as for formula, I have lucked out with my kiddies. They pretty much guzzle anything. But I would just keep trying formula after formula until you find something she likes. I have heard that Nestle Good Start can be easier on babies tummies. Maybe she is gagging because too much is coming out of the nipple. Try a slower flow. I found that Avent bottles work well... larger base, much like the breast. My kids preferred them over Dr. Brown's. We were on 1 for the longest... then 2... and still now only on 3. I find that 4 my son can kinda handle and my daughter can't... just comes out too fast for her. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your shoulder...that really stinks. That being said, I had to emergency wean my daughter too at five months due to a life threatning infection. She was not happy about it for a few days, but then she was fine. Also I think due to the extreme circumstances made it worse as well, I was away from her for nearly a week :( Anyhow, she also had issuers with regular formula...the lactose is very hard for babies to digest. Soy can make a lot of babies vomit and gassy as well. We went with Lactose free formula from Target. I have also heard that Good Start is a really good milk based formula as well for babies...it is supposed to be easier to digest because of the whey protein they use, verses casein protien that most formula use. I know that tardet makes a type of formula like this too. Whatever you decide, good luck and remember a healthy mommy is the best thing you can give your kid.

Hi H. -

Sorry to see you are in so much pain! When I transitioned from breastmilk to formula, I used Enfamil with Lipil, and everything was fine. Also, just to show you how different everyone is, an earlier poster (Nicole) said her child gagged on Dr. Brown bottles so she switched to Avent. We had the opposite problem! We started with Avent, and my son would take a big gulp and then start crying. When we switched to Dr. Brown, that problem went away.

Good luck - hopefully you'll be pain-free soon!

I haven't weaned completely yet, but my daughter gets one bottle of Similac Isomil at night right now and she didn't have a problem with it. I mentioned to her day care center that I was planning on stopping pumping completely by June and gave them a container of formula for when they run out of breastmilk and they were surprised that I give her the formula with no breastmilk mixed in and she takes it. They said a lot of moms have to start with a combination. So maybe you could try mixing some breastmilk in with the formula for now and just slowly start increase the percentage of formula until your daughter is drinking just formula?
