Need to Meet Others

My husband and I moved to Edmond from Turkey (he's Active Duty Air Force) about a year ago and we haven't really met anyone we consider "friends". The people we do meet are alot younger than us and single or alot older than us and have teenage children. We're expecting our first in March and I'm starting to get really lonely. The hardest part about all of this is that my family is in California and his is in North Carolina. The support network that exsists for most people having their first child is not here for us. I've tried to find groups in the area but most that I've found are for people that have pre-school or school-age children. I'm starting to panic because I know I can't handle this without some sort of support group. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi R., my name is A.. I am married to a Navy Pilot - we are from Oklahoma City - so we know the area well. My husband is deployed quite a bit. I have a 2 1/2 year old boy and am expecting a little girl in February. I work pt as an RN. I am 34 years old, my husband is 31. There is a Family Advocacy Program at Tinker AFB which is very helpful. They have a new parent support program for pregnant families or families w/ children under 3, parenting classes, developmental screenings, home visits by a registered nurse/social workers, and play groups. It is great. I would highly recommend it. It is free! My nurse's name is Traci Bassham - her phone number is ###-###-####. I think she could really help you out a lot. Please email me if you need someone to chat w/ or have any questions. Take care, A.

R. - Congratulations on your first! And welcome to Edmond. I'm sorry you haven't found anyone to bond with --I didn't either when I first married my husband and moved here. Slowly I began to meet neighbors and started some friendships, but I will tell you this: Having kids really does bring adult compansionship into your life!

But for now, don't be too quick to dismiss this quiet time in your life. When our first son was born, my husband, son and I went back to our house alone -- we don't have any family in town either. Although we could have asked someone to come from out of town, we decided to make this a bonding time for just the three of us. In retrospect, those are some of the sweetest times I can remember. Especially since he was followed by a brother 14 months later (whoops!).

We read a book called "Babywise". It really helped us determine how we were goint to operate as a team in bringing this new person into our home. It answered lots of questions for first-time parents and by using the book guidelines, our son slept throught the night by 7 weeks and to this day (age 9) is a great sleeper who's ready for bedtime without complaints or arguments.

You've probably already heard about MOPS (mothers of pre-schoolers). There is a group at our church, First Presbyterian of Edmond. Lots of the participants have very young children like you will in a few months!

Best of luck and enjoy this time with your husband and your first-born! - G.

I understand the need to connect with other new Moms. I suggest that you try getting involved in a Sunday School class with other couples who are in the same place in life! This was a great source of strength for my husband and I when we had our first child almost nine years ago. We are still connected to a lot of those same people today. Don't be afraid to visit around until you find somewhere that you feel is right for you. Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly with your delivery! (Our first was born March 3...it's a great time of year to have a baby with Spring on it's way!)

Hi R.,

Welcome to Oklahoma! My husband and I moved to Oklahoma from Alaska. All of our family is in Alaska. I was six months pregnant when we moved and had a 4 year old as well.

We started attending church and I was so pleased with the women of all ages who took a personal interest in us. The pastor's wife gave me a baby shower and so many ladies attended. They helped me pick out my daughter's middle name (Rose)and came to see me in the hospital.

My husband was working 70 hours a week in his new position, so I was very lonely. These ladies definitely filled a large void in my life.

I go to New Covenant UMC on Boulevard in Edmond now. Our website url is http://www.ncovenant.org if you want to check it out. There are a lot of young couples in your age range just beginning their families, so it may be a fit for you.

I have three children, 24, 12, & 8 years and have entered a new season in life, I am 44 and loving it! I am staying home right now because I am dealing with breast cancer. If you need to talk, go out to lunch, or go shopping, I am game! LOL! I love to shop!

My husband is a Marine veteran and my son was in the first deployment to Iraq, so we are somewhat of a military family as well.

You can email me at ____@____.com a great day!
Paula
