Need Suggestions to Help with 12 Week Old Cutting First Tooth

Okay moms, I need help. My beautiful 12 week old girl is cutting her first tooth on top. She is drooling like crazy and fussy. I am breastfeeding and she seems to be gnawing on me more than nursing. She is not taking her pacifier, ans seems to want to chew on something. I tried a teething ring but she does not know what to do with it, so basically I am rubbing it on her gums. I remember with my son giving him teething biscuits but he was 7mths old! She is only 12 weeks and hurting. Any ideas??? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW! Thanks so much for all of your responses. I immediately tried the cold/slightly frozen washcloth and it did work wonders for her the first night. Although she didn't quite take to it at first, she was cute moving her tongue around in circles on it. I also rubbed baby tylenol on her gums with my finger. She was able to sleep longer. The next day I purchased the teething tablets. Oh my goodness, they are wonderful! She is back to being my happy ladybug (with some extra drooling of course). Again, thanks to all of you for your quick responses, encouraging words, and great advice.

Hello I was recently in a store and this lady noticed my 9 month old drooling and chewing all over her toy and told me that she used to work in a dentist office. She told me to freeze a dill pickle and then let her chew on it.She said the salt from the pickle helps the gum tissue thin out so the teeth can drop down.I tried this and in a few days my daughters teeth came through. You do have to watch closely cause as the pickle thaws out they could get some pieces of it off.

Hi J.,
Congratulations on your new sweet Angel! :) A dear friend of mine recommended Hylands Teething tablets (very small pills) for teething and they work WONDFERFULLY!! I am the mother of 3 - 14 year old, 9 year old and a 10 month old. When my baby began teething, I was a bit out of the loop to say the least considering the age gap. :) The tablets are by far the best ones to use - I prefer them to the orajel gel. The other thing I've used is a wash cloth from the freezer - rubbing it on the gums helps to soothe them. You just place the washcloth around a finger and gently rub her gums - she'll love that. :)
Hope this helps!!
Blessings to you and your Angel!

My daughter cut her 1st tooth at 3 mos. Our ped recommended freezing a damp (not too wet so it does not get too hard) wash cloth and letting her chew/suck on the corner.
Hope this helps. Maybe try this before you nurse to soothe her so whe won't want to chew on you. Hope this helps.

You need to go to Wal-Mart or Walgreens and purchase teething tablets. They are all natural and can also be used with Tylenol. They are for irritability and teething symptoms. My daughter will be 2 next month and these have been a life-saver for us. Her pediatrician recommended them. If you ask the pharmacy--they should be able to help you find them.

Two options I might suggest. Our Dr recommended either freezing a carrot to let the baby gnaw on or let her chew on a pickle. The juices have some type of numbing on the gums. Both helped a lot!

hi J., your best bet for her age will probably be letting her knaw on a cold wet rag or one with a piece of ice in it, of course with you holding it, or my favorite thing are teething tablets. they are a homeopathic remedie sold at wal mart. im pretty sure they are ok for any age, and also check infants orajel, not sure on the age of that one though. hope this is helpfull goodluck,

Allowing her to chew or suck on a wet wash cloth is helpful provided that you hold it for her and make sure she doesn't choke. I've done dentistry as an assistant (for 6 yrs) and now as a business mngr (3 1/2 yrs) so almost ten yrs total and that's what we've suggested in the past. Cold helps. Also, make sure you're "washing" those little teeth teeth! So many Mom's neglect this area in their day to day hectic life and it can cause some painful conditions down the road. The best way to take care of them is to use a wash cloth to gently clean each tooth especially before bed and to never put a child to bed with a bottle that contains anything other than water, I know that seems hard but especially when children get older, having a bottle or "sippy" cup in bed with them will allow the contents to just sit on the teeth all night. Juice and milk have a high sugar content and will result in decay.

I suggest Hylands teething tablets. It also comes in a gel too. They can be found at Walmart and CVS. I dont suggest using frozen rags because from what I have seen and read about doctors say it causes "burned" gums. Just a cold wet rag works good. I have a 6 month old and he did much better when I gave him the tablets. He actually likes eating them. They dissolve instantly and he started eating better too. Baby tylenol did nothing! And just so you know, my son went a few months before the tooth ever cut through! I kept thinking....any day now! But it didnt come in til just a few weeks ago! Good luck!

Try Hyland's Teething Tablets. You can get them in the baby section at Walmart or the pharmacy. They are all natural and they worked great for my twin girls who seemed to cut their teeth one at a time. I would try giving them to her 10 minutes or so before you feed her to see if she will nurse better.

My son cut his first tooth at around 3 or 4 months. I had the same problems you are experiencing. My grandmother suggested that I crush some ice and wrap it in a washcloth and let him suck \ chew on the crushed ice through the washcloth. She said that is what they did "in her day" (she is 86 years old). I tried it and it worked beautifully! My baby could sort of hold the wash cloth in both of his hands and just went to town on that cool ice! In fact, I discovered I did not even need the ice, just really cold water on the washcloth worked good too! Good luck!

My boys didn't get their teeth until they were a bit older but what we did was wet a washcloth and put it in the freezer. When we took it out a few hours later, it was a bit stiff but cold and as they sucked on it the water went in their mouth (and everywhere else) but it became soft again and felt good on their gums as they chewed on it. There is an over-the-counter teething tablets that you can buy. I had never heard of them and my sister had some. We used them on` my 10 month old daughter this past weekend and they worked wonderful. She was really fussy and after using the tablets, she was happy, laughing and playing in less than 10 minutes. I am not sure of the name, but my sister said they are available at Wal-Mart. I intend to get some and keep on hand. Like I said, it made a tremendous difference with my daughter. Hope this helps!!!

My youngest son was like your daughter, cut his first tooth really early and couldn't use the teething biscuts like my first 2 kids did. Then a friend told me about these things called teething tablets. You can find them at any drugstore/Walmart. They dissolve as soon as you put them in their mouth. It really helps with the pain and they are long lasting and safe. Good luck with the teething.

This may sound very unusual, but I swear it works. I have four children and the oldest is 23. When he started cutting teeth, I hated the biscuits because they were so messy! I was inline at Walmart and the lady gave me this suggestion. She said to buy beef jerky, rinse it, and let him hold it and chew on it. OMG! That was the best thing ever! He could hold the long jerky and would rub his gums and loved the flavor. Now, he did sometimes smell like beef jerky, but he always had a smile. I have told other friends the same thing and they use it for their kids. I always bought Lawry's and it was so nice just to hand it to him and he could go to town on it. They can't bite it, so they can't choke and it's natural. I never really liked giving my kids lots of medicine.

Good Luck!

OH and I do believe a 12 week old would be able to hold it. Help her with it, just like you did the teething ring and she will like the taste and work wonders on the gums.

I agree with everyone else re: hyland's teething tablets and a cold or frozen washcloth to chew on. You can also try the kind of teething rings that you freeze. When my daugther was going through this, and breastfeeding, I actually taught her (over the course of a week or so) to drink milk from me, then stop periodically to chew on a frozen teething ring when she needed it. We'd sit down to breastfeed with a frozen teething ring. Each time she'd bite me, I'd firmly say, "no!" remove her from my breast and put the teething ring in her mouth to chew on. Then I'd let her come back to eating, until she'd bite again, and I'd repeat. It really didn't take very long before she got the distinction. She'd be eating along, pull herself off the breast, look for the ring, chew on that, then go back to eating. It made things much more pleasant for both of us. Sometimes her lips were REALLY cold on me, but I'd much rather be cold then bitten! Be patient and persistent, and you'll be surprised what your little girl can figure out for you! Good luck!

Not a lot worked for my kiddos, when they were teething. What worked the best was taking a baby wash cloth tent it in the middle, get the top part of it wet, freeze it, let baby suck on it. The cold soothes the gums. I swear I had 10+ wash clothes in my freezer.

Ibuprofen works better than Tylenol with teething (check with your ped for dosage).Be careful with orajel- it works well but if it get on the back of her throat it could cause difficulty swallowing.

Wet a washcloth and stick it in the freezer for her to chew on. My daughter would also chew on a thing of string cheese still in the packet for relief (it's gross afterwards, but it helped). My daughter began teething at 3 months, but the tooth didn't appear until 4 months. It's rough.

If she has a runny nose because of it, use some Johnson's vapor bath- it's excellent!

I also use the Hyland's teething tablets they are in the vitamin section near the childrens vitamins if you get them at Wal Mart. For my first son (the tablets didn't work as well) I could usually just give him a dose of Motrin and that would help him calm down enough and get some rest and then he'd be good to go for awhile. Good luck!!! My son has 4 teeth coming through right now so I'm in the same boat:D

My mother-in-laws only and best advice to me 45 yrs ago when my first was born was to use an electric toothbrush. She gave me one (they had just been invented). You can now buy them for babies and they are super soft. If she is sitting, give it to her in the high chair. Otherwise hold her, you have to be hands on. She can get it back where she needs it and it toughens the gums plus starts the habit of toothbrushing. My two daughters and three grandsons had no problems cutting teeth using this method. I have also spread this advice to many family and friends all with excellent results. Good Luck.

My little one cut teeth early too, just remember that Oragel and similar numbing products tend to make the gum tougher. Try Pure Vanilla extract rubbed on her gums and the Homeopathic teething tablets. A bit of Infant Tylenol helps during naps along with the tablets. The crazy thing is that once she started I would just find new teeth about once every 2-3 wks, and she had cut all her teeth by 13 months! And then her 24mo molars started at 22mo and were completely in by her b-day! My oldest cut teeth forever (started at the norm of 7mo) and each one was a trial! So hopefully your little one will be like mine and start early and get it over with without much trouble.

Hello J.,
I am sorry to give you an advice so late. I just got on my computer. I have been busy lately. I am behind on checking my emails. How is your baby? This is what my mother told me to do and I did it for my two girls when they were babies. It really WORKS!! Get an onion. YES Onion. peel a small portion and rub it on their gum. If they are old enought to hold it let them chew it. But watch them when they do it. It really best that you do it for them. What that does it numb their gum and they won't be cranky. I know. I know. BAD BREATH!!! But it really works. Good luck and I hope it will work for your baby. Take care and good luck. B.

The teething process can take several weeks and can start weeks before the tooth actually BUDS out of the gums. use oragel and get a mesh feeding bag and put some cold fruit in it for her to gnaw on.

Also, there is such a thing as Natal teeth and someitmes (rarely) they can be in the gums and they are basically dead teeth with no roots and can irritate the gums if they did not come out. (I see this in my support group I run for children with cleft conditions a lot for some reason but I have also know of people with this who did not have a cleft. but it is rare.

It's by hylands, you can get it OTC at WalMart, Target, etc in the baby dept or pharmacy, and it's all natural, so if you accidentally od your kid on it, it won't hurt them. I had a friend who's 2 y/o was cutting her molars and got into the tablets on her own. She finished off almost a whole bottle, but was fine! Not a good idea, but still good to know. ;)

We drop the teething tabs in to his bottle (they dissolve) a couple of times a day. I have put them straight into his mouth before (under the tongue) but it can be difficult to do. Are you exclusively breastfeeding or do you also use a bottle? They are homeopathic and seem to work. Talk to your Ped about using it for such a young infant.
