Ask the school what the routine is. They won't wear them inside. Find out if they wear them to school to play outside upon arrival or not. Go to consignments stores (used clothes still in good condition) or the Goodwill. I find Kohls/Target is cheap but wears out - esp. for a boy. If you can hand it down to a younger child, then getting Lands End (at Sears or online) is very well made. He'll need a hat, scarf, gloves and boots, too.

Hi R.,
Snow pants are worn over regular pants. Kids put them on to play in the snow. Snow pants keeps them warm and keeps their regular pants dry. Usually, they're available in an style that's like overalls. Then when you put his winter coat on he'll be protected from the snow completely. They aren't worn all day in school, only to play outside. :o)

Welcome!

As others have said already -
- snowpants go over the regular school clothes to keep the bottom and legs warm and dry
- bib/overall style of snowpants are great for young children who often spend much time sitting or rolling in the snow. The bibstyle helps them stay dry all the way from the seat to the mid back. (Snowpants that only come to the hips easily result in snow sliding up the child's back).

My kids attended a daycare with the policy that the kids went outside regardless of weather (unless very far below freezing). I like that policy as the kids then learn to be outside despite cold weather. They also sleep very well on those days!!

Good luck!
P.S. I would also suggest that you also consider a "neck gaitor" or "neck warmer" rather than a traditional scarf. The neck warmer/gaitor is similar to the top part of a turtleneck and keeps the upper chest, neck and lower face warm without getting loose or caught like a traditional scarf. Our whole famliy wears them for outdoor activities. It is hard to explain so I am including a link to show a picture... (this was the first image that appeared. Though I like LL Bean for kids and for winter stuff this is not an endorsement of the company.)

they only wear snow pants to play outside in the snow.

I only put my kids in snow pants when we went out to play with snow.. not when there was snow on the ground but we were just going in the car to the store..

Not sure about wehre you live.. but here there are tons of slightly used snow pants at our salvation army or kid resale store.. kids dont really war them out.. they are a great thing to buy used.

snow pants are something you buy to put on over their other clothing. So if your son wheres pants and shirt to school he would put the snowpants on top of those and then put on his coat so that when he plays outside in the snow he won't get wet and cold. they will put them on to go outside and then take them off when they come back in. he will need snow boots, hat and gloves also. the gloves are best if you get the nylon ones that won't soak thur with snow like the knit ones do

R.,
They wear them over their clothes to go play outside in the snow. I like the bib style ones so that they don't get snow up their backs http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/61352?feat=503369-GN2 Make sure you buy water proof gloves knit and fleece ones get wet very quickly but are great for just cold days. When they come inside they take them off just like they do their jackets and boots so send a regular pair of shoes during the winter.

edited: I was not suggesting the pants on the website. I would never spend that much on something they only wear for a few months during the winter. I just wanted to show you the style I was talking about. :)

Hi R..
In NY it does snow...and snow...especially out in Cooperstown. Snowpants are worn over clothes, on days when it's snowing. BUT NY has outdoor play provisions, so It's best to buy 2 pairs, one to leave at daycare/school for the days on outdoor play and the other for home (for going/coming during downfalls)- it'll save you a huge headache & some wet clothes.

In Oneonta there is a Walmart & Aldi's Supermarket. Aldi's has great deals on their snowpants, Walmart does too. Or look on http://oneonta.craigslist.org/ for snow pants that may have been worn previously & someone is selling cheap.

My kids went to montessori schools and, like most preschool kids, they played outside even with snow on the ground. In winter months when there was snow, we sent them with their regular pants (jeans or sweat pants) and gave them snow boots. We also put regular sneakers in their backpacks for when they got back into the classroom. We also sent hats and gloves.

I NEVER sent my kids to school with snow pants. If it's that heavy a snow that they need snow pants, either school will be closed or they won't be outside. You should send extra clothes to be stored by the teacher so in case your child gets wet.

The only time we use snow pants is when we go outside to sled or when the kids go run through the snow on weekends (or snow days). I think last year, we used them 3 times (we don't ski). I bought snow pants at Land's End. (www.landsend.com)

You can also get them on gap.com or llbean.com or any ski store.
