My husband and I are racking our brains to come up with some fun activities for our twin girls' 4th birthday party. We've checked out the bouncy houses but they're just too big and too expensive. Anyone have any ideas for us?

How about Chuck E. Cheese? If you go early when it opens, it's generally empty. The kids can play first and then eat before heading out. Also, if you sign up on the Chuck E. Cheese website, they give you a coupon for free tokens and then each child gets tokens on their birthdays too. My 4 year old still talks about her Chuck E. Cheese birthday from the previous year.

If you want to do the party yourself, you could do a Princess Party and have different stations to turn the girls into princesses. A scepter making station (dowles and cut out a star to put on the end and tie ribbons on it), a crown making station, a royal feast or snack, practicing curtsiying, put on music and let them dance. You could tell them to all come dressed up and have some extras for those that don't. Have an accessorizing station with necklaces and rings (or let them make their own necklaces and bracelets).

You could also pick another theme and do the same kind of thing. Animals (they could do something different for each animal at a different station). Books (each station could be a different favorite story theme, and tell the guests to come as a story character).

Good luck!

Have you considered a really great park? You can invite parents and kids who will have a great time and have the cake eating/ party specific parts in the covered seating area. You still have reserve the date and time with the parks department, but the fees are very small and could be a ton of fun for your girls and their guests.

I had an awesome party for my twins when they were 4. We used the gym at their preschool which was helpful but the theme was camping. I set up a couple tents in the gym to play in.

We had an I Spy "treasure hunt' of sorts. I simply hid a bunch of items around the gym (not too hidden) and then made a colorful 'treasure map'. It was just pictures of the items on a sheet of paper, we passed one out to each kid and they had to run around and circle the item when they spied it. They really loved that.

We had the whole class of 16 kids so another game we played was who could put on the camping gear fastest. We had 4 lines of 4 kids, one would run down, put on an item (big hiking boots, hat, backpack etc), then run back and the next kids had to put it on, run down and add an item. Kind of like a relay. It was very comical. You could do a camping theme pin the tail on the donkey.

The biggest problem about the whole party was I had everything planned for 16 kids and alot of people brought siblings or friends and made it too big.

For gifts we did a book exchange. Every kid brings a used or new book (wrapped is ideal). You put a book in each chair or on the floor under their butts. Then you play musical chairs but no one gets out. Just do a couple rounds and then say stop. Where ever they stop is the book they get. If they aren't wrapped then kids will gravitate to certain books so it's better if they are concealed.

Although we had a gym, I bet you could pull it off at a park or in a back yard. Good luck! The twin party ideas are tough.

I am in the Seattle area and I have a great kids party business. Noah's Ark Animal Workshops are a great activity for kids. I bring the activity to you, so there is no need to worry about going to the mall or anything like that. I make the birthday child feel very special and the kids all have fun. The activity takes about 60-90 minutes and includes the hands on stuffing activity, coloring and games. There are even theme parties to choose from too. There are several different packages to choose from to keep within your budget. Since each kid goes home with a new friend, there is no need for party favors. This is a party that others will talk about for years to come.

Visit FunPartyForKids.com

Since you are in the Oregon area, I can do one of 2 things. We could do what I call a party in a box, where I ship you everything you need to do the party and I give you a discount off the price. Or I could try to locate a Crew Member in your area. Just let me know.

It sort of depends on your girls and what they enjoy... Are they 'girly girls' or tomboys? How many kids do you plan on inviting? Usually, keeping the guest count at a match with the age they are turning - ie: four guests is appropriate. But with twins... does that mean you invite eight? A tea party is good for that age. You can have the guests come in their frilly dress up clothes. Or have a Dress Up Trunk for them to select some froofroo items to wear while at the party. You could let each guest bring their favorite doll or stuffed animal to the tea party. Even from the dollar store, you should be able to get child size tea sets or small teacups. A weak caffiene free tea or a punch would be good. Make finger foods, maybe sandwiches cut with a cookie cutter into cute shapes or meat & cheese wraps that can be sliced into little rolls. Cupcakes may even be a way to go, if you arent solid on having to do cake. You may even feel inspired to do 'manicures' for the guests, painting their nails. Have a selection of colors for them to choose from. Purchase some foam type photo frames, glitter glue and sparkly stuff. Let each guest decorate a frame, then in the Thank You send them a photo you took at the party of the guest and the birthday girls. If you have a Poloroid or a digital camera/printer, you can send them home with their picture. Magnetic back frames are great for popping onto the frig for display. The craft store or dollar store will be good starting points. If you can set this all up outside, your clean up will be easier. If not, put down disposable plastic tableclothes and then you can wad it up and throw it all out. Hope these ideas help - have fun!

Have it at a park where there is a great playground. Pinata's are always fun, relay races, obsticle courses...You have lots of options in the summer! When you decide on a theme; google it and you'll find party's planned out from food to games to go along with the theme. Have fun :)

Tea party? Or dress up? 4 year old girls usually loooooove princess dress up. In my experience, structured activities make more work for parents and they're not necessarily any more fun for the kids. At 4 they entertain themselves best with pretend games. I woul give them some toys and snacks and let them play for a few hours.

My daughter is older now but when she was about 4 the sequel to Cinderella came out on video. We had a princess tea party and watched the movie. We had everyone dress up like princesses. We had extra dresses, tiaras, necklaces etc. from the dress up box in case someone didn't have any princess gear. I had a few tables set up with little tea sets, one set ours, two others borrowed, and flowers from the yard as center pieces. We had "tea" and cookies and cake and fruit. Then we all watched the Cinderella movie. A couple of her boy cousins even came dressed as princes. And one mom arrived dressed as Cinderella in her raggedy clothes complete with mop and bucket. Everyone totally got into.

Another similar thing we have done for family night that you could do for a party - Each family member puts a movie title on a paper then into a cup. We draw out one title and then plan a night around it. For example, one month it was Mulan, we ordered in Chinese food and made tea and tried to dress up as best we could. We played Chinese checkers and watch the movie. Another time was Home on the Range, we barbequed burgers, ribs had corn on the cob, wore kerchiefs...Can't remember what game we played. But we've been doing this for a long time. Pick a movie, plan the food and games around that theme and then at the end of the day we watch the show. It's great! You would obviously need to pick your theme/movie ahead of time for the party.

Good luck!!

I don't know where you live but Farrell McWhirter park in Redmond currently has little baby animals (bunnies and piglets born on the 13th) in there little farm area. So, a picnic at the park would be fun and free... just a thought.

Edited to say... Ok nevermind my idea LOL, I just noticed you are in Oregon. Still a picnic at a park would be fun :)

I don't know the Gresham area but you might want to find a fun water park like Murase water park in Wilsonville. You can have cake and then the kids have a blast in the water and you don't get stuck with much work or expense.

Why spend a lot of money when you can pull some grown up clothes out of your closet, other mom's closets, or from the Goodwill type stores. Put on hats, "light makeup",grown-up shoes, scarves, feathers, etc. and have a GIRLS TEA PARTY. 4 year olds will love that more than spending huge amounts of money. Favors can be second hand costume jewelry or maybe a used floral teacup with flower seeds to plant a little boquet!

I just did our first birthday party with guests for my five year old. We kept things simple: cake, ice cream, pin the tail on the fish (we had a fish themed party), a fishing game (where they throw a fishing line over the couch and someone clips a prize to it, and just some good old fashioned play time.

The kids had a BLAST! If I were you, I'd stay simple. We got all the prizes and the party favors at the dollar store and saved a lot of money. My hubby is good at baking cakes, and so that was free.. The whole party cost us about $40 and the kids were really happy.

Have fun!

Where do you live? If you live near Hillsboro Oregon try Out of this world Pizza & Play, have the party after 2pm especially Saturday, Sunday or holidays & you will be very happy. www.outofthisworld.net. I didn't get any of the party packages, instead I just brought table cloths & grabbed tables in the open. Brought my own ice cream birthday cake, they kept it frozen until we needed it. Brought my own party favors to give out. We had the parent's pay the entry fee & not give presents. This was a big hit with parents & kids alike, parents didn't have to stress over a present to buy & kids had 16,000 square feet of play area. All the kids slept well that night. My daughter is 7 now & we are going to keep doing this arrangement until she doesn't want to go there anymore. It was a great experience all around. Previously I had gone to Pappa's Pizza Parlor since my daughters birthday is in January I don't have many options. I really like Out of this world because it's very clean & there are seperate play areas for infants, toddlers & big kids as well as common play areas. All the structures are sturdy enough for large adults too, I have seen 200 pound men playing in all the structures with their kids. This place would definately be worth the drive. By the way by not having the kids give presents we didn't get any unwanted things this way, in previous years we have received some very undesirable presents (flying hard plastic dolls that break glass, we have a house full of Fenton glass). The Pizza is great not like at Chuck E. Cheese, ugg. They also have ice ream & water is free.

This is what we put in the invitations:

(Children) asked to have a birthday party at Out of This World Pizza & Play. Instead of presents we are requesting that you pay the entry fee for your child. Presents are still welcome if you or your child wish to give them.

Siblings are welcome at the party. Entrance fees are:
Over 5: $7 Under 5: $5 Under 1: fee with a paid sibling

Thank you,
The ____ Family

Hope this helps.

Hi J.. I have twin boys who are 3 (almost 3.5) so I'm not sure I have any great suggestions for you. I'll be looking at your responses to see what ideas I can grab for next year. In case you are looking for any great twin dad gifts this father's day, I would love it if you could check out my website http://www.multiplemomsrock.com
I design and sell great shirts for moms, dads and grandparents of twins. My dad shirts say "Raising twins is an extreme sport" and another says "The Few. The Proud. The Exhausted. Dad of Twins."

Hello J.!

You have already gotten some great advice. We, too, have twin girls who are now going to be 12 soon. We have always tended to try and make their birthdays special because they have to share it. We have done a different theme every year. For their 4th, (Barbie) Princesses was the theme. We did have dress up opportunities as well as decorating sceptres and those conical princess hats (you can buy the white mess forms at a costume supply place and add some fabric in the top and then they can decorate with "jewels" and glitter glue, etc. We just had it in our backyard. Some of our other themes over the years have included: "Telebubbies at the Children's Museum (when they were popular), Zoo Party w/pony rides, "Flower Fairy" (dressup & jumpy house), Sponge Bob at the Aquarium, "Pirates", Pool Party & Pizza and when they have gotten older: Camping Sleepover (big tent in backyard, smores, etc); Club Pengin, Harry Potter, etc. I realize that I am putting a lot out there but it may help you. All our parties tend to have some dressing up involved and our girls have loved them and still remember them years later. Good luck!

PS Whatever you decide, you might be able to bargain for a lower price due to the economic conditions that many companies are facing (i.e. the jumpy house people may come down in price if you ask them).

Hi J.,
I had my daughter's 3rd at SweetPeas Kidzone in the Bethany area. It had a pretty good climbing structure (not as big as the bounce houses but plenty of climbing and slide)with ball pit, and the party leaders were great. They do themed parties and Cindy does a great Princess Tea party if your girls are into that. It was also great because it had a playhouse and things for younger siblings to do. good luck
