Need Step Stool for Potty

My daughter is successfully potty training. However, recently she has been preferring the baby bjorn little potty over the potty seat that sits on our toilet. I think this is because at day care they have a smaller toilet that she can get on and off of herself...I'm excited for her to go in any potty, but the potty seat has never been a problem before and frankly it's a lot easier/more sanitary than the potty chair. We already have the baby bjorn step stool, but it's not high enough for her to get onto the big toilet herself. I'd like something sturdy & safe, and not too trashy looking because it will be in the guest bathroom. Also something with a wide enough 2nd step that she will have enough room to safely turn herself around after climbing to sit on the toilet. Have spent a lot of time looking and have had trouble determining heights...different websites seem to have different stats for the same product. Suggestions?

What can I do next?

We had the same problem. Here's what we did.

1) We packed up the little potty so it was out of sight and not part of the discussion.
2) We bought wooden step stools from wal-mart. They're taller than the plastic ones, they are more attractive, and they usually come in a light and dark shade of wood.

Good luck.

Hi J.,
I have a home daycare and we use a stool we got at Walmart. I have used the one they have over by the baby diapers. I now am useing one that is a little taller we also found it at Walmart but this one is a light yellow and we found it over by the laundry baskets. I have never had a porblem with the children not having enough room to turn around. I hope this might help. Good luck T.

We use a step stool that is meant for the kitchen it works great and doesn't slip around. I have taught my son also how to get it from the closet or move it to where he can use it.

The one I got from Walmart is a dark gray color so it goes great with any decor and is light and easy enough for little ones to pick up and move around if they ever need to. It has rubber traction on the bottom of the legs.

Also, I just wanted to suggest to you that you can get rid of the potty seat that you put on the potty and let her try to sit on the toilet, holding herself up with her hands on the seat next to her. She'll get the hang out it real quick. I don't know how old she is, but it sounds like she may be able to do that already. No more worrying about what special kid potty seats to use after that. My daughter did even better at pottying once I got rid of the child contraptions, and now she slides onto the seat herself without a stool and just uses the stool for the sink. Good luck.

you might try taking some measurements and have one custom built that way you can determine the width of the steps and the height.

Rubbermaid makes several very sturdy and wide stools. We use them for helping toddlers to brush teeth and potty. Also, the church uses the same exact stool for some of our ladies to more easily step in to the church bus. Walmart and many drugstores have them.

Tina is right! I like the one I purchased by the Rubbermaid containers. It is small enough for a little to be able to climb on yet large enough f or them to turn around and pull pants up/down without falling! Good luck and et me know if you have any secrets that make your potty training go easier. I have trained my first 2 but my 3rd (2yr old) is nearly trained but can't seem to be rid of the pull-ups! I bought the wooden ones at Target. They work so well and look great in the bathroom. We loved the two step one so much, we ended up buying the single step too so washing hands was easier too. Now my son can do EVERYTHING himself and I don't have to even go in the room with him anymore!

Have you ever been on a toilet that was elevated. Although you might truly feel like a queen on a throne I don't enjoy that feeling. I am short and I like my feet to touch the floor because being close to the earth brings with it a sense of security. Independence is also important to children. Lots of adjustments are made for the sake of children which affect the home environment. From toys in the family room and high chairs and booster chairs in the dining room to potty training aids in the bathroom. I have never considered any of these adaptations for children "too trashy" and it is highly likely your guests won't either. Your life is filled with meeting the needs of a baby who will, all too soon, need no help from you with any of these things. You can choose to understand the impermanence of this potty training period, lower expectations about housekeeping in general and address the needs of the child without changing anything. There will be adjustments at other ages and parents will have to decide what the priority is at that time and go from there. Why mess with success? Congratulations!
Peace, B.

Try Target. I have an older home and the potty sits quite high. My 19 month old likes to climb up, sit on the potty and pretend. He can easily move up and down. I stay close because there is always a chance he could fall. They run about $20-25, come in light, dark and white wood. It looks nice and holds his bath toys. Good luck!

I have to agree with Jodie. My daughter did so much better when we got rid of all the potty set contraptions. So only fell in to large germany potty once, she caught on real quick. We didn''t use any special stool just a wooden one we had with rubber on the bottom. Well for my daughter anything is a stool if she can move it and stand on it. Good luck.

Target has some really cute 2 step wooden ones. They are about $25. We need to buy one too as our guest bath is also our daughter's. We had the baby bjorn one to match the potty seat and the one that sits on the toilet. I'm so excited to start potty training! Ha.
